Description

H. D. WALOOTT. COMBINED SOISSORS AND NIPPERS.
No. 27,501. Patented Mar. 13, 1860.
UNITED STATES rare FFIQ.
HALSEY D. WALCOTT, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO MARTIN L. BRADFORD & 00., OF SAME PLACE.
SCISSORS AND NIPLE'ERS.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 27,501, dated March 13, 1860.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HALSEY D. WVALcoTT, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improved Article of Scissors and Nippers Combined, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which Figure 1, represents a pair of scissors of my improved construction. Fig. 2, a view of a portion of one of the blades enlarged to show more plainly the form of the point.
Persons using sewing machines often feel the want of a convenient instrument for grasping the end of the thread to draw it through the eye of the needle, as it is often in rather an inconvenient position to be taken hold of with the hand; to supply this want is the object of my present invention, which consists of a pair of scissors, the points of the blades of which are formed into a pair of nippers.
That others skilled in the art may understand and use my invent-ion I will proceed to describe the manner in which I have carried out the same.
Referring to the said drawings, the two blades a, I), of the scissors are formed as usual with cutting edges 8, and are riveted together at 4. The point of each blade however for a short distance is formed with a flat face 5, the plane of which is at right angles to the flat side 6, of the blade. This face 5, is set back from the edge 3, leaving a shoulder 7 so that when the faces 5 of the nippers come together, the edges 3 may shut past each other and cut asin ordinary scissors; the shoulder 7 of one blade shuts past the shoulder 8 of the nipper of the other blade; the width of each of the faces 5 is about equal to the thickness of the two blades and when shut together are not more cumbersome at the point than an ordinary pair of scissors. When thus constructed these scissors may be used like any others for cutting a thread or any other article for which they are suited, at the same time that the points form a pair of nippers for seizing hold of the thread, the two instruments being combined in one they will be found to be particularly convenient for the use of operators of sewing machines. There are other employments where this article will be useful, for example to weavers.
I am aware that pincers have been made with a port-ion of the length of each arm brought to an edge for cutting ofi wire; I
do not therefore claim such an article; but
Wha-tI claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent as a new article of manufacture is A pair of scissors with the points of the blades formed into nippers substantially as described.
