(Cl. 139-255) This invention relates to the operation of automatically changing full bobbins to replace expended bobbins during the operating of a loom and more particularly to a device for positively guiding ejected bobbins into a receptacle provided therefor.
lieretofore a cast iron guide which is integral with the picker stick guide has been provided for the purpose of directiu g eiected bobbins into a can or other receptacle provided therefor. The size of this guide is limited because it is constructed of cast iron and increased weight would add to the wei ht already imposed on the lay. The stresses imposed on the guide during the operation of the lay also impose a limitation on the size thereof. While the bobbin guide presently employed is effective in directing the majority of ejected bobbins into bobbin or quill cans provided therefor many are thrown to the floor and broken due to improper ejection of the bobbin. While devices in the form of metal deflectors and guides of particular configuration have been employed none have been successful in combating this throwing of many bobbins onto the floor of the mill where they are damaged. The loss of bobbins over relatively short periods of time has been enormous and it has been found that my improved bobbin guide extension almost entirely eliminates this expensive loss of bobbins.
Accordingly it is an object of this invention to provide a. bobbin guide extension which will positively guide ejected bobbins into the receptacle provided therefor even though the bobbin be thrown crooked when ejected and even though the bobbin is not fully ejected during the period that the lay is on front center.
Another object of my invention is to provide a sheet metal guide which may be inexpensively constructed and which will serve as an attachment to presently existing bobbin guides for the purpose of positively guiding ejected bobbins into receptacles provided therefor even though the bobbin change operation be improperly carried out.
i accomplish these and other objects of my invention by providing a bobbin guide extension for a loom having automatic bobbin change mechanism including a unitary sheet metal blank, said blank being adapted to be secured to the bobbin guide on the lower side thereof, a portion of said blank extending laterally of said guide in the direction of the bobbin tips for a distance on the order of one half the width of the guide and being bent slightly upwardiy, an upturned flange carried by the edge of said laterally extending portion remote from said bobbin guide, a portion of said blank extending in substantial alignment with said guide and with said laterally extending portion for a sufiicient distance to positively guide ejected bobbins into a receptacle provided therefor and a continuation of said flange carried by said last named portion.
Some of the objects of my invention having been stated above others will become apparent to those skilled in the art relating to weaving when the specification is read in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which:

Fig. 2 is a side elevation taken substantially along the line 2-2 in Fig. 1.
Referring more particularly to the drawing the numeral 1i broadly designates the frame of a loom, the loom of any desired type having automatic bobbin changing mechanism. The numeral 12 designates the arch of the loom and positioned thereon is an automatic bobbin change mechanism, which could be of any type, broadly designated at 14. A picker stick guide designated at 16 is shown secured to the lay 18 as by the bolt 20 within a slot Lia provided in the lay therefor. It will be noted that the usual picker stick 30 and check strap 32 is provided for propelling the shuttle back and forth across the lay to be received by the usual shuttle boxes, the front portion of one of them being shown and indicated at 34.
When the yarn is almost expended from a bobbin which is in use the automatic change mechanism is actuated by suitable mechanism (not shown) to raise the actuating arm 36 into position to be struck by the hunter 38 so as to cause the transferrer 40 to eject the spent bobbin 42 and replace same with a full bobbin 44 as is shown in Fig. 2. It will be noted that the slot 18a is provided in the lay for this purpose.
The picker stick guide 16 is provided with an upwardly extending portion 46 which is adapted to be struck by the butt of the bobbin to prevent the bobbin from entering the picker stick slot Silo. A downwardly and forwardly extending guide 48 is also provided and is disposed at an angle of about 45 with the horizontal. This guide 48 normally serves to direct spent bobbins into the bobbin can 69 which is provided therefor and which is suitably secured to the loom frame ll). It has been found by observation and study, however, that during the process of ejecting it spent bobbin that the bobbin is often thrown crooked so that there is a tendency for the bobbin to hang up on the picker stick guide and thus be broken. It has also been observed that sometimes when a bobbin change takes place, with the lay on front center, that the quill is deflected and hence slowed down so that often the lay returns and carries the guide 48 beyond the edge of the can so that the bobbin will be thrown to the floor. It is also noted that sometimes the bobbin bounces back from the can particularly when the can is nearly full.
The subject invention consists essentially of a sheet metal bobbin guide extension preferably of unitary construction broadly designated at 50 and it will be noted that a forwardly and downwardly projecting portion 52 is provided which is in substantial alignment with the guide portion 53. The bobbin guide extension 50 is preferably provided with holes (not shown) so that it may be secured by suitable means as by screws 54, to the bobbin guide 48. A laterally extending portion is provided as at 56 which extends for a distance of about one-half the length of a bobbin in a direction remote from the bobbin guide. This portion 56 projects slightly upwardly and is provided with an upturned flange 56a. It is to be understood that while the bobbin guide 50 has been described as being constructed of sheet metal any suitable light material could be employed. It will be noted that the lower portion is provided with an upwardly projecting flange extension 52a and that the portion 52 always projects into the can on which has an angular upward edge designated at iia.
It will be noted therefore that the laterally extending portion 56 and the upturned flange 56a carried thereby are effective to prevent almost all bobbins which are thrown crooked from becoming entangled in the picker stick guide. The forwardly and downwardly extending portion 52, which is in substantial alignment with the guide 48 and the laterally extending portion 56, act as a means for positively guiding deflected bobbins into the can 60 or other receptacle provided therefor because a portion of the downwardly and forwardly projecting portion '52 extends into the can 60. This also prevents spent bobbins from bouncing back from the can and onto the floor. It has been found in practice that this bobbin guide extension, which can be so inexpensively and easily constructed and used effects tremendous savings in bobbins.
While a preferred embodiment of my invention has been described using specific terms, such description is for illustrative purposes only, and it is to be understood that changes and variations may be made without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as defined by the appended claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. A bobbin guide extension for a loom having automatic bobbin change mechanism comprising a sheet metal portion extending laterally of said guide in the direction of the bobbin tips for a distance on the order of one half the width of the guide, an upturned flange carried by the edge of said laterally extending portion remote from said bobbin guide, a portion extending in substantial alignment with said guide for a sufflcient distance to positively guide ejected bobbins into a receptacle provided therefor and a continuation of said flange carried by said last named portion.
2. A bobbin guide extension for a loom having automatic bobbin change mechanism comprising a unitary sheet metal blank, said blank being adapted to be secured to the bobbin guide on the lower side thereof, a portion of said blank extending laterally of said guide in the direction of the bobbin tips for a distance on the order of one half the width of the guide, an upturned flange carried by the edge of said laterally extending portion remote from said bobbin guide and with said laterally extending portion for a sufficient distance to positiveyl guide ejected bobbins into a receptacle provided therefor and a continuation of said flange carried by said last named portion.
3. A bobbin guide extension for a loom having automatic bobbin change mechanism, a picker stick guide positioned on the lay carrying a bobbin guide and a can for receiving exhausted bobbins, comprising a sheet metal blank, said blank being adapted to be secured to the bobbin guide on the lower side thereof, a portion of said blank extending laterally of said guide toward the medial portion of the picker stick guide, an upturned flange carried by the edge of said laterally extending portion remote from the bobbin guide, a portion of said blank extending downwardly and forwardly in substantial alignment with and forming an extension of said bobbin guide, said downwardly and forwardly extending portion extending for a sufiicient distance so that the terminal portion thereof is within the can regardless of the position of the lay and a continuation of said flange carried by the edge of said downwardly and forwardly extending portion remote from the bobbin guide whereby, ejected bobbins will be guided directly into the can at all times and will be thus prevented from hanging up in the picker stick guide.
4. A bobbin guide extension for a loom having automatic bobbin change mechanism, a picker stick guide positioned on the lay carrying a bobbin guide and a can for receiving exhausted bobbins, comprising a unitary substantially rectangular sheet metal blank, means for securing said blank to the bobbin guide on the lower side of the guide, an upwardly extending portion of said blank also extending laterally of the said guide toward the medial portion of the picker stick guide, an upturned flange carried by the edge of said upwardly and laterally extending portion remote from the bobbin guide, said blank extending downwardly and forwardly in substantial alignment with and forming an extension of said bobbin guide, said blank extending for a suflicient distance so that the terminal portion thereof is within the can regardless of the position of the lay and a continuation of said flange carried by the edge of said blank remote from the bobbin guide whereby, ejected bobbins will be guided directly into the can at all times and will be thus prevented from hanging up in the picker stick guide.
