PUMP.
No. 276,226. Patented Apr. 24 1883.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DANIEL M.QOOPER, OF NEW CASTLE, IREIANA, ASSIGNOR OF trwo-THIRnS TO SAMUEL A. COOPER AND SARAH A. I-IARRIS, 0E SAME PLAoE.
PUMP.
SPEoIFIcATIoN forming part of Letters Patent No. 276,226, dated April 24, 883.
Application filed November 20, 1882.
(No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, DANI L M. OooPER, a
citizen of the United States, residing at New- Gastle, in the county of Henry and. State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pumps; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and t0 the let ters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in pumps, and has for its object the. keeping of the water in the pipe of the pump above the platform of the well or surface of the earth the same temperature as it is in the well, and thus prevent freezing of the water above said platform, as well as in the ventilation of the well from which the water is drawn, and which keeps the water cool in summer, and also in the prevention of insects and vermin of various kinds from entering the well, thereby keeping the water clean and fit for use; and with these ends in view my invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of the several parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described and specifically claimed.
In the annexed drawings, which fully illustrate my, invention, and to which reference is made herein, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved pump. Fig.2 is a sectional elevation of the same; and Fig. 3 is a plan or top view of shell.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
A represents a shell constructed of iron or other suitable material in the form of a bell, the upper portion of said shell being made Solid and provided with two air-passages, a a, for ventilating the well, said shell A covering the opening in the platform that covers the well, and this Shell is also provided with and inolosed at the top by a perforated screen, B, 5 said screen being perforated nearits periphery, so as to enable the perforations to come in line with or over the air-passages a a on the inside of the shell, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
U is a pipe, which passes through a hole, 0, in the Screen B or solid portion of the shell A, and is affixed to or integral with the stock D of the pump, said pipe 0 extending down through the center of the shell into. the well, and up through which the water is drawn from the well by pumping the pump in the ordinary manner, or in any convenient manner that may be desired.
The operation of my invention is obvious, the shell and pump being suitably located over an opening in the platform that covers wells usually, and the construction of the shell or its contour being such as to'draw the foul air up through the passages or openings in the shell naturally, while at the same time the perforations in the screen and top of the shell permit fresh air to descend and circulateitself throughout the well, and by which means the water is kept pure and cool in summer, and in winter an even temperature is maintained in the water in the pipe above the platform with that in the well below it, which precludes the freezing of the water in the pipe in winter above the platform or surface of the earth.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by 7 5 Letters Patent, is-
The shell A, provided with air-passages a a, screen or top B, having perforations therein, pipe 0, and stock D, all constructed and arranged as herein described, and for the pur- 8o pose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my Signature in presence of two witnesses.
DANIEL M. COOPER.
