J. VOSBURGH.
DRIVE' WELL POINT.
Patented my 7, 1885.
UNITED STATES PATnT Orricn.
JACOB TOSBURGH, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, AASSIGNOR TO THE X. O. NELSON MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
DRIVE-WELL POINT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 321,550, dated July 7, 1885.
(o model.)
To (LZZ whom, it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, JACOB VosBURGH, of the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Drive-Well Points, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, and in which- Figure'l is an elevation of the point with parts of the wire-gauze or perforated metal covers broken away. Fig. 2 is au elevation with the covers removed entirely. Figs. 3 and 4 are transverse sections taken, respectively, on lines 3 3 and 4 4, Fig. 2. p
My invention relates to an improved point for drive-wells; and my invention consists in forming spiral grooves on the outer surface or periphery of the point for the passage of water, which aots to clean the. pores of the gauze or perforated metal and relieve them of the dirt that prevents the passage of water through them, as more fully described hereinafter.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the point, which in practice is covered by a thin wire-gauze, B, and an outer coarser cover, C, of wiregauze or perforated metal, and it (the point) has a number of perforations or holes, D, made through it, itbeiug hollow, as usual.
As far as I have yet described, there is nothing new over points that have long been in use. Great difficulty has been experienced with these points in that the mud and dirt get into and stop up the pores of the wiregauze or perforated metal, thus preventing 35 the passage of water to the interior of the point. To overcome this dilieulty is the object of my invention; and to this end I form spiral grooves J in the outer surface or periphery of the point that extend the full 4o length of the point, forming channels for the water inside the covers, as indicated by the arrow, Fig. l, which creates a vacuum that causes the mud and dirt to be sucked out of the pores of the covers, and the water also 45 acts to wash and keep clean the holes D and also the pores of the cover. I prefer to make four grooves, as shown.V
I am aware of Letters Patent No. 130,871,- issued August 27, 1872, to Roswell R. Rouse, 5o and do not make claim to anything therein shown or described.
I claim as my inventionl. A hollow perforated drive-well point provided with spiral grooves on its outer sur- 5 5 face, for the purposes set forth.
2. A drive-well point provided with spiral grooves on its outer surface, in combination with porous covers, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
JACOB VOSBURGI-I.
In presence of- GEO. H. KNIGHT, SMIL. KNIGHT.
