UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LUTHER M. DRAPER, OF PLAINWELL, MICHIGAN.
GATE-HINGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 276,165, dated April 24, 1883.
Application filed November 16, 1882.
I0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LUTHER M. DRAPER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Plainwell, county of Allegan, State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Gate-Hinge, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has for its object certain improvements in gatehinges, hereinafter described, and set forth in the claim.
In the drawings forming a part of'this specification, Figurel is a side elevation of afence and a gate with the hinge attached; Fig. 2, a view looking from the right-hand post in Fig. 1 against the inner side of the other post and one edge of the hinge, the gate-boards being in section; Fig. 3, a view from the same point, with the gateopen and standing at right angles with the fence; Fig. 4, a front side view of the hinge broken away at the lower end, and Fig. 5 a face view of a support to the gate, forming part of the hinge.
D D illustrate a board-fence, with gate-posts P P, and B B a gate, all of common construction. The hinge is made of two straps of iron, a r, so bent and secured together at the ends as to form a rectangular space between them, as in Fig. 2. If preferred, the hinge may be cast. The ends'ofbar rare extended and made round, to form an axis to the hinge in hinging it to the gate-post, Fig. 2. 1n the space between bars a r is pivoted wheel 0. c is a brace on bar 1', to keep the hinge in proper position with the gate. If deemed more practical, friction-wheels may be connected with the arms (No model.)
of said brace. Two of the gate-boards are located inthe space or recess between bars a r of the hinge, the upper board resting and adapted to run on wheel a, as in former hinges. The lower gate-boards are located below the hinge,Fig. l. Elbow-supportsff, having eyes to receive the round ends of bar 1" of the gatehinge, are secured to the gate-post. One of the supports,f, is slotted M8, the upper one in the drawings; but it may be the lower one, or both, by means of which, by loosening the bolt which secures said support to the post, the support may be disengaged from the round end of bar 1 and the gate readily unhung. Also, by means of this slot S the supports may be readily adjusted to the gate-hinge.
In the operation of opening the gate it is carried to" the left, as herein illustrated, and then swung around at right angles with the fence, as illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3 and above described. 7
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with the hinge having the extended ends forming the axis, of the elbowhinging supports provided with the adjustingslot, for the objects specified, substantially as set forth.
LUTHER M. DItAPER.
