CHARLES \V. HIGBY, OF JACKSON, MICHIGAN.
CORSET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 275,653, dated April 10, 1883.
Application filed November 10, 1882 (No model.)
'To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES W. HIGBY, of the city and county of Jackson, State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Corsets; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying sheet of drawings, form: ing part of this specification.
This invention is in the nature of an improvement in corsets; and the invention consists in a corset with the seams of its several sections running diagonally from the top or upper edge of the corset backwardly to its lower edge or side and toitsback, for the purposes hereinafter described and as claimed, this invention dilTering from another of mine,- for which I have made application for a patent under date of November 8, 1882, in that its sections run diagonally downward from front to back instead of from back to front, as in this last case.
In the accompanying sheet of drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my corset, showin g the section-seams running from top to back. Fig. 2 is a front view of same, and Fig. 3 is a plan of the several sections.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts in the several figures.
The purpose of this invention is to construct a corset so that the seams of its several sections'will extend diagonally from the top or upper edge of the corset to its lower edge or side, and also to its back, in that particular differing from the corsets described in my application vfor a patent made simultaneously herewith, in which the seams of the sections are shown and described as running from the top or upper edge of the corset to its lower side and front. By this last-named arrangement of the seams they were nearly parallel to the position of the ribs of the body, causing the corset to readily yield to every movement of the body and ribs; but, as it is in some instances desirable to have a corset somewhat less yielding in its nature and to otter more support to the body of the wearer, I construct the corset which is the subject of this application with the seams A of the sections B extending from the top a of the corset diagonally to its lower side, b, and its back 0. This arrangement of the diagonal seams brings them, when the corset is on the person, in a position crossing somewhat at right angles, the ribs of the body tending to keep them in position and affording to the-wearer an increased degree of support, while at the same time not depriving the corset of the necessary elasticity to render it comfortable to the wearer. Each section B of this corset is cut preferably on the bias, and the corset may be provided with bones e and cords, either placed parallel with the seams A of the corset or arranged vertically, extending from the bottom to the top of the corset, or any other arrangement ofthe bones and cords may be employed without departing from the spirit of my invention, which is, broadly, placing or arranging the section-seams of a corset diagonally from the top of the corset to its lower side and back.
Corsets constructed substantially as above described may or may not have openings to receive the crown of the hips, and if employed, these openings may be provided with buckles and straps. They may also have fitted to them waistbands stitched to their inner surface.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A corset with the seams A of a part of its sections B extending diagonally from its upper edge, a, backwardly to the lower edge, b, the seams of another part extending from the said edge a to. the back 0, and the remainder extending from the front edge to the lower edge, substantially as shown and for the purpose described.
