Application September 3, 1954, Serial No. 454,049
1 Claim. (Cl. 292--347) This invention relates to locks and latches and has special reference to a lever attachment to door-knobs. The ordinary door-knob is usually smooth and usually hard to turn if the latching mechanism controlled by the knob is somewhat stiff.
One important object of this invention is to provide a lever attachment for a door-knob whereby the knob may be easily rotated.
A second important object of this invention is to provide an attachment of this kind which may be readily applied to any existing door-knob.
A third important object of this invention is to provide an attachment of this kind which may be firmly gripped onto the knob.
A fourth important object of this invention is to provide a device of this character which may be secured to the spindle on which the knob is mounted.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in general of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and particularly claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, like characters of reference indicate like parts, and- Figure 1 is a side elevation of one form of the invention.
Figure 2 is a plan view thereof.
Figure 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a section on the line 4-4 of Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a detail section on the line 5-5 of Figure 1.
Figure 6 is a side elevation of a second form of the invention.
Figure 7 is a plan view of the form shown in Figure 6.
Figure 8 is a section on the line 8-8 of Figure 6.
Figure 9 is a section on the line 9-9 of Figure 8.
It is obvious that minor changes may be made in the form and construction of this invention without departing from the material principles thereof. It is not therelCC fore desired to confine the invention to the exact form herein shown and described, but is wished to include all such as properly come within the scope claimed.
In the invention as here disclosed there is shown a door-knob 10 which is mounted on a spindle 11 and which controls the opening and closing of a door.
In the form of the invention shown in Figures 1 to 5 there is illustrated a spoon-shaped handle 12 having an enlarged concave end 13 adapted to fit on the top of a knob 10 and extending from the knob to provide a hand grip 14. At the larger end 13 of this handle 12 there is provided a slot 15 wherein is positioned one end of a flexible strap 16 which extends around the knob 10 to a point underneath and on its outer end is provided with a pocket 17. This pocket 17 contains a nut 18. In the handle 12 there is provided a depending socket 19 through which passes a screw 20 that engages the nut 18 (Fig. 3) so that when the screw is tightened the band 16 fits firmly around the door-knob.
Under these circumstances downward pressure on the arm 12 serves to revolve the knob 10.
In the second form of the invention there is provided an arm 21 corresponding to the arm 12 of the first drawing, but in this form, from the larger end 22 of the arm there extends a lateral portion 23 which is bent to seat on the spindle (Fig. 9) where it is gripped by clamp 24 which is clearly shown in Figures 8 and 9.
It is now readily understood that when this invention is applied to a door-knob the leverage permitted by the lateral arm will enable the door-knob to be turned with a minimum of muscular effort.
What is claimed is:
A handle device for door knobs comprising a lever with an under curved chamber at one end that is adapted to embrace a perimetrical portion of a door knob, a flexible band having an end attached to the said one end of the lever and which band is adapted to snugly engage the greater portion of the perimeter of a door knob, another end of the band having attached thereto a connector means with a threaded bore, a bolt opening through a longitudinal central portion of the lever, and a bolt extending through the opening and engaging the threaded bore.
