1 claim. 1
The invention relates to a drain faucet or plug for containers and more especially to an encased extensible drain faucet or plug for shipping barrels, drums or other containers for fluids.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a faucet or plug of this character, wherein the same is attachable to a container having iiuid content, to become a permanent part of such container, and remains with the latter at all times, and is adaptable to be encased therein so that such faucet or plug will not become damaged when the container is to be shipped from one locality to another, and Will be handy for use in dispensing the content from the container when this be required.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a faucet or plug of this character, wherein leakage of the content of the container is avoided, and the necessity of inserting a drain-off device therein is entirely eliminated, the faucet or plug being applicable to all kinds of containers for holding fluids, and is novel and unique in the makeup of the same.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a faucet or plug of this character, wherein a wrench or other tool is not required for the adjustment thereof, in that such faucet or plug is permanently equipped with the necessary turning medium for the operation thereof at any and all times.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a faucet or plug of this character, which is simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and efficient in operation, readily and easily manipulated, strong, durable, easy of application,
combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which disclose the preferred embodiment of the invention, and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary sectional View through :a container showing the faucet or plug constructed in accordance with the invention installed and in normal encased position.
Figure 2 is an outside face view thereof, the operating medium being partly broken away.
Figure 3 is a view of the faucet or plug looking toward its inner end, and a portion partly broken away.
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken on the line 4 4 of Figure 2 looking in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 5 is a sectional View taken on the line 5--5 of Figure 2 looking in the direction of the arrows.
Similar reference characters` indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawings.
Referring to the drawings in detail, A designates generally a portion of a container for holding a uid to be dispensed therefrom, and may be of any type, and is formed with an apertured lug portion IU internally threaded, the aperture being for filling and draining the container, as usual. Adapted to nt the lug portion I0 is the faucet or plug denoted at B, which constitutes the present invention and is hereinafter fully described.
This faucet or plug B, comprises a straight tube or cylindrical body II open at one end and permanently closed by a head I2 at the other end, while throughout the extent of the said tube or body I I are screw threads I3 matching the threads of the lug portion Ill, so that the open end of the tube or body can be engaged therewith. By adjustment of the tube or body I I in the lug portion Ill it can be worked inwardly or outwardly of the container A.
The tube or body II at the inner or open end thereof is internally threaded for a distance as at I4 for the engagement therein of a centrally perforated valve seat I5, its perforation I6 being closed by a valve I'I having the stem I8 thereof adjustably threaded at I9 through a central boss 2|] formed on the inner side of the head I2 Sto project outwardly of the latter. When the valve I'I becomes unseated it clears the perforation IB so that iiuid from the container A can flow into the tube or body I I to nd way to a drain hole 2I in the said tube or body, which when worked outwardly of the container will permit the dispensing of the content thereof, as appears in Figure 4 of the drawings.
The body or tube II carries a hand adjusted locking collar or nut 22 which is adapted to be tightened against la gasket 23 which encircles the said tube or body and is normally compressed against the head I2 to prevent leakage at the point of junction of the tube or body with the latter, the collar or nut being loosened when it is desired to encase the faucet or plug or to extend the same from the container A, these two positions being shown in Figures 1, 4 and 5 of the drawings.
Formed on the outer face of the head I2 at diametrically opposite points thereof are dove--` tailed keys 24 which are adapted for wedging engagement in a dovetailed key-way 25 provided longitudinally in a tubular detachable turning handle 26, and this key-Way 25 extends only through one end of the handle, so that it can be detached for giving access to a cross-grip at the outer end of the stem I8 whereby the valve I'I may be manually opened or closed at the seat I5. The handle 26 is for manually turning the tube or body II to encase the same or extend it as before stated.
The handle 26 at the key-way end has telescopically tted thereon a combined latching rnedium and hand-hold 21 which is of tubular form having spring tensioned finger released latches 28 engageable in keeper openings 29 in the handle 26. The hand-hold 2l when in the position shown in Figure 1 of the drawings maintains the said handle fast on the head I2. Such handhold when in the position shown in Figure 4 effects ya cranking knob for the convenient removal of the handle from the head I2 to give free access to cross-grip at the outer end of the stem Ii fof the valve I'I for the opening and closing thereof. This hand-hold 21 is swingable at right angles to the handle `2t to permit the detachment of .thelatter from the head I2, this position being shown by dotted lines in Figure 4 of the drawings.
What is claimed is:
yIn combination, a container having a threaded opening and a faucet therefor, said faucet comprising an externally threaded tubular member adjustably vmounted in said threaded opening whereby the member can be screwed into and out of :said container, a flanged head closing one end of said tubular member, a valve seat in the opposite end of said tubular member, a valve adapted to seat on said valve seat, a valve stem attached to said valve and threadedly engaging said head and extending there-beyond, a cross member secured to said valve stem for manually turning said valve stem to -control the now of contents irom said container into said tube, a drainhole in the lwall of said tube for draining 'off the contents therein, a pair of diametrically positioned wedge-shaped keys on said flanged head, a tubular turning handle having a wedge-shaped keyway detachably receiving said keys and having a first and a second pair of aligned apertures, said pairs of apertures being longitudinally spaced on said tubular turning handle, a tubular latching member slidably mounted on said tubular turning handle, extensions integrally formed with said tubular latching member, aligned spring-pressed pivot pins s-l'idably mounted in said extensions and adapted to be selectively engaged in either of said pairs of aligned apertures for selectively positioning said tubular latching member in either of one of two positions relative to said tubular turning handle whereby when said pair of pivot pins is positioned in said first pair of apertures, said tubular latching member is telescoped upon said tubular turning handle .lock-ing the same to said flanged head and when said pair of aligned pivot pins is positioned in said second pair of apertures said tubular latching member is extended beyond said tubular turning handle for ,pivotal movement 'to the same, forming a rcrank portion therefor, and a llock nut on said Iexternally-,threaded tubular member and adapted to be screw-ed thereon into engagement with the container to lock `said tubular member against rotation relative to the container.
