APPLICATION FILED cor. a, 19m.
Patented July 13, 1920.
UNITED STATES ROY MITCHELL, or Elvin,
Pa; E a'r OFFICE.
socKE'r-wRENcfi. I
Application filed October 8, 1917. Serial No. 195,405.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROY MIT HELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Enid, county of Garfield, State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Socketrenches, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to tools, and has particular reference to that type known as wrenches.
The object of the present invention is to provide an. improved type of socket wrench adapted more-particularly for use in restricted places such as on Ford cars and like 'mechanisms; to provide a relatively strong and simply constructed wrench which is capable of transmitting considerable pressure from the hand to the nut or bolt head to which the wrench may be applied; and a wrench which comprises relatively few parts which may be economically constructed and assembled.
The above and various other objects and advantages of this invention will be in part described and in part understood from the following detailed description of the present preferred embodiment, the same being illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of a wrench constructed according'to the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through the gear case taken immediately beneath the outer cover plate.
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal transverse section v of the gear case and parts carried thereby.
Referring to the drawing 10 designates a socket or head of considerable size and internal configuration to embrace a nut or bolt head or the like having external angularly disposed faces. The socket 10 has upon its inner end a shank 11 preferably angular in cross-section and at the base of the shank is provided with an enlarged circular bearing 12 adapted to fit in a correspondingly formed aperture in a cover plate 13 which closes a gear casing or body part 14. A relatively large gear wheel 15 is placed in the casing and has a central opening therethrough in cross-section to that of the shank 11, and through which the shank projects for causing a simultaneous turning of the gear wheel and the socket. The socket shank projects beyond the gear wheel 15 and has a reduced bearing surface 16 fitting in an aperture formed in the bottom of the gear case 14. The said shank is further provided with a reduced screw threaded stem 17pro ect1ng from the bottom of the axial opening therethrough receiving the corresponding formed shank 21 of a crank brace 22. The crank brace 22 projects from the casing in an opposite direction or side from that which the socket 10 projects. A collar 23 is sweated or otherwise suitably fixed upon the crank brace 22 near its outer end and is adapted to bear against the bottom of the casing 14. Immediately adjacent the collar 23 is a cylindrical bearing portion 24 fitting in a correspondingly formed open- 1ng 1n the bottom of the casing and which lies immediately adjacent the shank 21. The outer end of the shank 21 hasa reduced cylindrical bearing portion 25 fitted in a correspondingly formed aperture in the cover plate 13. The shank 21 terminates at its outer end in a reduced screw threaded stem 26 upon which is mounted the washer 27 and a retaining nut 28.
The pinion'20 is connected to the gear wheel 15 by an idler pinion 29 arranged intermediately in the casing. The idler is mounted upon a bearing pin 30 in the form of a bolt having a head 31 engaging against the bottom of the gear case 14 and having a cylindrical intermediate portion traversing the casing and forming a support for the idler pinion. The opposite end of the pin 30 has a reduced threaded'stem 32 receiving thereon a washer 33 bearing against the outer side of the cover and held thereagainstv by a nut 34 which is also mounted on the stem 32.
' The use of the device is apparent for the socket end of the casing 14 may be inserted. in a relatively narrow space and the socket '10 applied to the nut or bolt head located in the case. The crank brace 22 is of sufficient length to clearany usual obstructions between the gear-case and the crank portion facilitating the turning of the crank brace by hand. The sides of the casing 14 serve as a hand hold or, in other words, to receive the thumb and index finger of the operator steady when grasping the wrench to place the socket 10 over a nut or bolt head and also to the wrench when the other hand is rotating the crank brace, with the .knob 35' against the breast of the workman.
The casing 14 is provided at its open side with lateral lugs 36 adapted to enter correspondingl'y formed notches provided in the lateral edges of the cover 13 to anchor the same in position and retain it from edgewise displacements.
It isof course understood that various changes and modifications may be made in the details of constructions of and design of the above specificallydescribed parts of this invention without departing from the spirit thereof, such changes and modifications being restricted only by the scope of the followin claims.
claim:
1. A socket wrench comprising a brace in the form of a crank having a non-circular shank portion, a driving gear fitted to said non-circular shank portion, a driven gear having a non-circular central opening, a nutreceivmgsocket having a shank provided with a non-circular portion arranged in and conforming to said non-circular opening, an intermediate gear meshing with said driving gear and driven gear, a gear case comprising an elongated wall member having a marginal flange surrounding all of said gears and an elongated cover plate seated on the edge of said marginal flangeto'form a wall member'for the gear case, said edge of ,the marginal flange having lugs and the cover plate having notches in which said lugs are mounted to prevent edgewise displacement of thecover plate, the shanks of said brace and socket being rotatably mounted in the wall members of said gear case. I
2. A socket wrench comprising'a brace in the; form of a crank having a non-clrcular shank portion, a driving gear fitted to said non-circular shank portion, a driven gear having a non-circular central opening, a nutrecei-ving socket having a shank provided with a non-circular portion arranged in and conforming to said non-circular opening, an intermediate gear meshing with said driving gear and driven gear, a gear case comprising an elongated wall member having a marginal flange surrounding all of said gears I ing portion rotatably mounted in the last mentioned wall member and a relatively small cylindrical bearing portion located in the other wall member, said shank of the brace terminating in a reduced screw 'thread- 1 ed stem, a nut mounted on said stem and cooperating with said'collar to secure the elongated cover plate, saidshank of the nutreceiving socket having an enlarged cylindrical bearing portion mounted in one of said wall members, a reduced bearing portion mounted in the other wall member and V a relatively small threaded stem extending from said reduced bearing portion, a nut on the last mentioned stem, a bearing pin in the form of a bolt extending through said intermediate gear, said bearing pin having a head engaging one wall member of the gear case and a reduced threaded stemextending through the other wall member, and
a nut arranged on the last mentioned stem and cooperating-with said head to secure elements of the gear case. Y
