I Patented July 9, 1935 7 55 UNITED STATES PATENT orrlcs QRNAMENTAL KNOB OR HANDLE Arthur Wiltshire, Jr., Media, Pa.
Application July 13, 1934, Serial No. 734,920
2 Claims. (Cl. 40-43) My invention has reference to handles or knobs poses. 3 represents a knob or handle portion| adapted for use with gear shift levers, such as preferably formed of semi-vitreous material such required in automobiles, and for other mechanical as porcelain or ductile glass, and may be of one devices. color or formedof varied colors due to admixture My improved handle or knob is of a rounded of coloredglass in the ladle prior to the pressing 5 shape adapted to be easily grasped in the palm of of the same in suitable m'olds. The rear portion the hand and provided withamonogram or markof the knob body 3 is provided with a recess or ing device secured in the upper curved surface of blind hole 4 which may be internally screw the knob and facing in a direction opposite to the threaded as at 5 and into which a metal bushing shift lever or spindle to which it is secured, the 6 may be screwed for forming a connection be- 10 body of the knob or handle being formed of vitretween the vitreous knob body 3 and the shift ous material such as glass or porcelain, or any lever 2. It is desirable that the bushing 6 firmly other suitable material or composition, and havscrew into the threaded recess 4 so that when it ing a shallow recess in which a metallic monois fully introduced, the outer thread portions 1 gram bearing plate is inset and preferably held of said bushing will interlock with the threads 5 15 in place by friction creating means. a of the recess 4. After the bushing has been intro- My inventionis furthermore provided with a duced in position upon the knob, the internal screw threaded bushing screwed into engagement threads 8 of said bushing are screwed upon the with the handle or knob, said bushing being also threaded end 9 of the shift lever 2. In this maninternally screw threaded whereby it provides ner the knob is firmly secured to the shift lever. 20 rigid engagement between the shift lever or spin- As shown in Fig. the face po of e. dle and the handle or knob. knob is slightly recessed, as indicated at l0, and
My improved handle or knob further consists into said recess is arranged a monogram plate of the metallic inset plate made to conform to the II, which plate is made somewhat spherical and curved surface of the handle or knob and retained preferably so that its outer surface is substan- 5 thereon by rearwardly extending prongs forced tially flush with the outer curved surface of the into engagement with suitably directed holes in ob- The pl H is preferably made i and the vitreous material so as to bend the prongs the monogram or ornamentation is provided by sufilciently to make a firm frictional connection cutting or stamping the Same through he Plat between the monogram plate and the vitreous as indicated at I 2, so that through said perfora- 30 handle or knob, tions the color of the vitreous material may be With the above and other objects in view, the exposed to heighten the effect of the monogram. nature of which will be more fully understood As considerable rou u e is p te to the from the following specification, the invention on a p a in the shifting of the it s consists in the novel features of construction i p t t t the union between t Sa plate 35 hereinafter more fully described and defined in and v treous o y of the b e a firm attachthe claims. ment which will prevent the plate from shifting Referring to the drawing: Fig. 1 is a side elevain a tata l d ti or r m pu lin ff from tion of a portion of the shift lever and with my .the surface of the knob. This I accomplish in improved knob or handle applied thereto and the following manneri The g am plate-is illustrated in section; Fig. 2 is a front view of my p d with a p u a y of p s M11 as Shown improved handle or knob; Fig. 3 is an inverted in 3, Which project from e ack in an perspective view of the monogram plate, showangle toward c Other as indicated y e d ting one form of monogram and a plurality of ted line extensions from the free ends of the said projecting retaining prongs so positioned and of pins I ia, and as also indicated in Figs. 1 and 4. ashape to engage holes in the vitreous body of the In practice, the front surface of the knob 3 is handle or knob; Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectional drilled with a plurality of oblique holes which corview of a portion of the handle or knob and illusrespond to the parts marked l3, and which cotrating more fully the manner of attaching the inside with the oblique prongs M of the plate 00 monogram plate to the body of the knob; and Fig, after they are driven into said oblique holes and 5 is a general view, corresponding to Fig. 1, of a the monogram plate forced into the recess Ill in modified form of attachment between the knob the finished article. The prongs I40. when ready and the shift lever. to be inserted into the holes l3 are somewhat 2 represents the shift lever of anautomobile, or out of alinement therewith and the points are any shaft or spindle in a lock or for other purmanually adjusted to insert the ends of the prongs Ila into the exposed open ends of the holes l3, and when they are driven in they assume such position as would coincide with the holes l3 as indicated at M in Figs. 1 and 4. When the monogram plate II is thus secured in position upon the knob, it will be free fromall projections, such as would-occur if screws were employed. In practice, it is found that the friction between the pins I40. and the holes I 3 is amply sufficient to positively retain the plate against displacement by any ordinary manipulation-of the shift lever in the operation of the automobile, or for any other practical use of the improvements.
Referring to Fig. 5, the general construction may be considered as corresponding to that shown in Fig. l, with the single exception that the bushing 6 of the knob is locked in definite position on the end of the shift lever 2 by means of a lock nut I5. This construction enables the knob to be set, with the monogram plate, in proper position and thereafter locked in-such desired position. Any other suitable means for locking the knob upon the shift lever may be employed if so desired.
In cases where the knob is to be applied to shift levers of different diameters and threads, it is only necessary to cut the inner screw threads 8 of they bushing in the shape and dimension to correspond to the threaded end 9 of the shift lever 2.
Of course the ornamental knob or handle illustrated and described herein may be modified in various ways without departing from the invention herein set forth and hereafter claimed.
I claim:
1. A knob for gear shift levers and the like, comprising a knob portion of vitreous material slightly countersunk on its exposed face, a monogram plate fitting flush into the countersunk portion to provide a smooth upper face in the knob, said knob having holes extending at an angle to the surface thereof, said plate having prongs slightly resilient and normally extending at right angles to the under surface of the plate, and said plate being attached to said knob by means of said prongs extending into said holes.
2. A knob for gear shift levers and the like, comprising a knob portion of vitreous material slightly countersunk on its exposed face, a monogram plate fitting flush into the countersunk portion to provide a smooth upper face in the knob, said knob having holes extending at an angle to the surface thereof, said plate having prongs slightly resilient and normally extending at right angles to the under surface of the plate, and said plate being attached to said knob by means of said prongs extending into said holes, said prongs when in the holes being bent whereby they are frictionally held therein.
