HANDLE FOR LOOK-KNOBS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 15, 1913.
Application filed March 15. 1913. Serial No. 754,525.
To all whom 2'2 may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY ANDERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Handle for Lock-Knobs, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists of an improvement in a handle for lock knobs, etc., and consists of novel means for removably connecting the same in position.
It further consists in providing means whereby the handle is adapted for various sized lock-knobs, etc.
It further consists of novel features of construction all as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
The annexed drawing and the following description set forth in detail one mechanical form embodying the invention, such detail construction being but one of the various mechanical forms in which the principle of the invention may be used.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a handle for lock knobs embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a side elevation showing the device in position on a lock knob. Fig. 3 represents a sectional view thereof.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a handle for lock knobs, etc., comprising an arm or body 2 having the jaw members 3 projecting therefrom, and to which arm is connected a grasping handle a. As here shown I have formed the arm and jaws of a single strip and the said jaws being preferably of spring material and removable. The strip is suitably bent to accomplish the desired result and I connect the handle 4 adjacent the end of the arm 2 opposite to that from which the jaws 3 project. Upon opposite sides of the device I provide engaging means here shown as hooks 5 connected with the arm 2 and situated in suitable relation to the jaws 8.
6 designates a member, preferably resilient, and here shown as a coiled spring, said member being adapted to be connected with a hook 5 upon one side and to be broughtaround and to be connected with the hook on the opposite side, with its intermediate portion bearing against the free ends of the jaws 3, spanning and so closing the space between the said free ends of said jaws.
The spring may be caused to be connected with the engaging means orhooks in any suitable or desired manner and as here shown I have provided the loops 7 adjacent the ends of the springs for that purpose.
Any suitable means may be provided for holding the spring in suitable relation with respect to the free ends of said jaws and for this purpose I have shown a recess 8 in each jaw the walls of which recess are adapted to engage the spring 6 to prevent improper lateral movement thereof and s0 hold the spring as stated.
Any suitable means for connecting the handle 4, with the arm 2, may be employed. As shown I have provided a bushing 9 suitably connected with the arm 2, and provided with a threaded opening. 10 designates a screw for engagement with the threaded opening and which screw passes through the handle 1 and has a head engaging with a suitable part of the handle in order to prevent displacement thereof but permitting rotary movement.
The operation of the device will be readily apparent. To connect the device with the knob 11 of the lock one end of the spring 6 is removed from engagement with its respective hook 5 and the jaw members are forced over the knob or shank 12 thereof after which the spring is brought around the jaw members 8, bearing against the free ends thereof and the end of the said spring 6 is reengaged by the hook 5 so that the device is held firmly in position tightly embracing the knob or shank 12 thereof and by grasping the handle 4t and rotating the same the knob is turned in unison therewith while accidental removal or displacement thereof is prevented by reason of the spring 6 closing the space between the free ends of the jaw members since in order to release the device and to remove the same it is necessary to release one end of the spring from the hook after which the device can be removed.
It will be seen that by reason of the use of the spring the device is adapted for use on any size knob or shank and is readily adapted therefor as will be evident.
Having thus described my invention what. I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is
1. In a device of the character stated, jaw members having their free ends spaced apart, and a removable longitudinally expansible and contra-ctible member bearing against the aw mei'nbers, spanning the space between the free ends thereof and extending in the same direction as said jaw members and adapted for connection therewlth.
2. In a device of the character stat-ed, jaw members having their free ends spaced apart, a removable longitudinally expansible and contractible member bearing against the jaw members, spanning the space between the free ends thereof and extending in the same direction as said jaw members and adapted for connection with said aw members, and means for connecting said member there with.
3. In a device of the character stated, spring jaws, and a longitudinally expansible and cont-ractible member bearing against the free ends of said aw and having one end connected adjacent one jaw, and the opposite end connected adjacent the other jaw.
a. In a device of the character stated, spring jaws, and a longitudinally expansible and contractible member bearing against the free ends of said jaw and having one end connected adjacent one jaw, and the opposite end connectedadjacent the other jaw, and means on said jaws for engagement with said member for holding the same in position.
5. In a device of the character stated, spring jaws suitably supported, and a longitudinally expansible and contractible member bearing against the free ends of said jaws and closing the space therebetween, said member having one end connected adjacent one jaw and having the other removably connected adjacent the other jaw.
6. In a device of the character stated, an arm, jaws projecting therefrom, an engaging means for each aw, and a longitudinally expansible and contractible member bearing against the free ends of said jaws and having its ends connected with the respective engaging means.
7. In. a device of the character stated, an arm, jaws projecting therefrom, a hook on each side of said arm, and a longitudinally expansible and contractible spring adapted to bear against the free ends of said jaws and having one end rcmovably connected with a hook on one side, and the opposite end ren'iovably connected with the hook on the other side. j
S. In a device of the character stated, an arm, jaws projecting therefrom, a hook on each side of said arm, a longitudinally expansible and contractible spring adapted to bear against the free ends of said jaws and having its ends connected with said hooks, and means on said jaws for engagen'ient with said spring for holding the same in suitable relation to said jaws.
