Description

(Model.) II vM 8; J. W.v ROSS.
COMBINED BAIL BAR AND LQGK. No. 275,416. Patented Apr. 10,1883.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ISAAOM. ROSS AND JOSEPH W. ROSS, OF SOUTH OARROLL'ION, KY.
COMBINED BAIL-EAR AND LOCK. -i
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 75,416, dated April 10, 1883. Application filed November 6, lese. (Model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ISAAC M. Ross and JOSEPH W. ROSS, ofthe town of South Carrollton, in the county of Muhlenburgh and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Combined Bail-Ear and Lock, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention has relation to improvements in bail-ears; and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of the same, whereis carried, all being of ordinary construction. y
Aindicates a bail-ear, hinged at C to a plate, G, that is secured to the side of the pail J.'
Above the hinge-joint C the ear is provided with a casing, c, having in its outer face a keyhole, d, and on the inside thereof a hook, e, that is operated upon by a key,f, in locking and unlocking the ear.
In the inner face of the upper portion of the ear is a slot, b, that opens into the lockcasin g c, through which passes the free end of a link, B, that is hinged at d to the handle e of the cup M. Above said slot is an eye, H, made in the ear, in which the hook end ofthe bail N is attached. Opposite the lock-ear, and secured tothe opposite side of the pail, is a stationary ear, K, having an eye, f for the opposite hook end ot' the bail, and below said eye this ear is provided with a perforation, ai, through which passes the outer end of a pin, D, that is secured at its inner end to the lid or cover L.
Fig. 2 of the drawings shows our device iu a modied form, having the slot l) and eye H, but no lock-casing, and this ear is connected or hinged at its lower end, E, to a, bar, I, that issecured at its ends h It to the pail.
The free end .of the loop P in Fig. 2 connects with'the ear R through the slot b, similar to Fig. 1, and the construction is the same, except that the inner end of said loop'is not hinged to the cup-handle, but is hinged to a plate, i, that is secured to the upper face of the lid L.
u It will thus be seen by the above description, and by reference to the drawings, that when it is desired to secure the lid to the pail the pin D .is passed into the perforation a,
after which the end of the loop B is passed through the slot b into the casing c, when the same is caught bythe lock-hook e, when the keyfis turned, thus securing thc loop and cup to the pail, and thereby preventing the cover from removal until the ear is again unlocked.
In securing the lid to the pail, as shown in Fig. 2, the pin D is passed into the perforation a, in a similar manner as in Fig. 1, after which the end m of the loop P is sprung through the slot b in the hinge-ear R, the elasticity of the bail N permitting said ear to move outwardly and give to the pressure of the loop, when an ordinary padlock or a pin may be applied through the end of the loop projecting through the slot b, thus securing the cover to the pail.
`Having described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A bail-ear and lock combinel, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
A bail-ear hinged at its lower end to the pail, and provided at its upper end with an eye lo receive the hook end ot' a bail, and having a slot below said eye to receive a loop or staple secured to the cup-handle, whereby the same may be locked to the bail-ear, substantially as described.
3. In combination with the bail-ear having the slot b and hook c, the loop B, hinged to the cup-handle, whereby the cup and cover or lid are secured to the pail, substantially as described.
4. The combination of the hinged ear, having the slot b and perforation d', with the wire loop B, pin D, bail N, stationary ear K, having the perforation a to receive said pin, and an eye, f', to receive the hook end of the bail N, substantially as described, and for the purposes specitied.
ISAAC M. Ross, J. W. Ross.
