Description
G. FREDERICK 8v S. .N. TRUMP. Padlocks.
No. 221,405. Patented 'Nov. 11, 1879.
WITNESSES INVENTORS 2 W ATTORNEY UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
CHRISTIAN FREDERICK AND SAMUEL N. TRUMP, OF WILMINGTON, DELA- WARE, ASSIGNORS TO TRUMP BROTHERS MACHINE COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEM ENT IN PADLOCKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 221.405, dated November 11, 1879; application filed April 3, T879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, CHRISTIAN FREDER- 10K and SAMUEL N. TRUMP, of Wilmington, in the county of New Castle and State'of Delaware, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Padlocks; and we do hereby declare that the following is .a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The object of this invention is to furnish a lock especially suitable for railroad freightcar doors, mail-bags, crates, trunks, and other packages for the transportation of goods and merchandise upon which padlocks are commonly used.
In the drawings, Figure 1 shows the lock unlocked ready for use. Fig. 2 shows the lock placed over a staple and locked.
But little description is necessary, the novelty consisting in the arrangement of the case and bolt.
The case A may be made round or oval, or of any other convenient form, one without angles being preferred. Nearly in the center is a slot, B, and passing through the side of the case and the slot is the locking-bolt C.
When the lock is unlocked the bolt projects from the case, as shown in Fig. 1, and to lock it it is only necessary to place the finger on it and thrust it in, when the locking mechanism within the case catches and holds it securely. To unlock it a key is used in the usual manner.
There may be key-holes on both sides of the case, and either side may be placed outward over the staple.
The advantages of this device are obvious.
The round form of the lock and its sitting close to the article upon which it is placed render it less likely to be destroyed by catching to or striking other things in handling, as is the case with the common form; and the bolt projecting through the side of the case admits of the lock being locked by the pressure of the finger on it, without the delay consequent upon taking up, inserting, and turnin g the keya matter of importance when the lock is used on cars, mail-bags, and other packages which are kept open until the latest possible moment; and this arrangement possesses the elements of convenience in use, strength, and simplicity of construction in a remarkable degree.
We are aware that locks have heretofore been made round in form, and with a central orifice passing partly or entirely through the case, and we do not broadly claim such arran gement.
The internal mechanism is not the subject of the present application, since that can be "aried at pleasure, and is capable of many modifications; but,
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the case A, the central orifice, and the locking-bolt, said bolt passing through the central orifice and the side of the lock-case, and adapted to be closed or locked by the pressure of the hand, substantially as described.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own we alfix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
CHRISTIAN FREDERICK. SAML. N. TRUMP.
