NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANZ ZANDER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO ISAAC KAUFMANN AND SIGMUND KAUFMANN, BOTH OF SAME PLACE.
Box FOR TOILET-s ETS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 275,110, dated April 3, 1883.
l Application filed February 3,1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, FRANZ ZANDER, ofthe city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Box for Toilet- Sets, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide certain new and useful improvements in boxes for toilet-sets, whereby oval, circular, square, or oblong mirrors can be held in a box without requiring'any change in the construction of the same.
The invention consists iu the combination, with the lid of a toilet-set box, of a springhook fastened to the under side of the lid at one end and of a spring-clamp fastened to the under side of the lid at or near the middle. .lhe spring-hook serves to hold the upper end ot' a mirror against the under side ot the lid, and the clamp serves to hold the upper end of the handle against the under side of the lid. Mirrors of any shape or suitable size can be held by means of the above-described de; vice.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part ot' this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a front view ot' my improved box for toilet-sets, showing the lid raised. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail longitudinal sectional View of part of the lid on the linear x, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the under side of said part. Fig. 4. is an enlarged detail cross-sectional view of' part of the lid on the line y y, Fig. l; and Fig. 5 is a plan view of the under side of said part.
A spring-hook, A, is secured to the under side of the lid B ot' a toilet-set box, O, at the middle of one end, in such a manner that the free end of the prong of the hook projects inwardly from the end of the lid, as shown. A V-shaped spring-clam p or double spring-hook, D, is secured to the under side ot' the lid B half-way between the side ed ges and about onethird ofthe Whole length of the lid from that end opposite the one at which the spring-hook A is secured. The spring-hook A, the clamp D, and the under surface of the lid are covered with silk, satin, plush, velvet, or other material in the usual manner. of the lid is not provided with a recess for re- '.lhe under side ceiving the mirror F, as has been customary heretofore. The spring-hookAand the springclamp D are made of metal strips or wire, provided on the inner surfaces with a covering, E, of felt, chamois, leather, flannel, or other fabric'to prevent the hook and clamp from scratching the mirror F or its frame. The mirror F is placed on the under side of the lid B in such a manner that the upper end of the mirror passes under the free end of the prong of the spring-hook A, as shown in Figs. l and 2, and the upper part of the handle G passes between the two spring-prongs of the clamp D, as shown in Figs. l and 4, whereby the mirror will be held ou the under side of the lid. AThe devices for holding the mirror are entirely independent of the shape of the mirror, and an oval, circular, square, or polygonal mirror of any suitable size can be held by the above-described devices as well as the oblong mirror shown. Heretoforearecess of the same shape as the mirror had to be made on the under side of the lid, and this made the boxes for the.toiletsets quite expensive.
Havingthus described my invention, Iclaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. The combination, with the lid of a toiletbox, of a spring-hook attached to the under side of the lid at one end and a spring-clamp attached to the under side of the lid at or near the middle, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, with the toilet-set boxlid B, of the spring-hook A, attached to the under side of the same at one end, and ot' the V-shaped spring-clamp or double hook D, at-
tached to the under side of the lid at or near A the middle ofthe same, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination, with the toilet-set boxlid B, of the spring-hook A and the spring- Y clamp D, attached to the under side of the lid, and provided with a covering, E, of felt, leather, or analogous material, substantially as herein shown and described, for the purpose set forth.
FRANZ ZANDER.
