ISAAC WV. HEYSINGE R, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
SUSPENSION-WRENCH FOR GAS AND OTHER COCKS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 275,042, dated April 3, 1883.
Application filed January 27, 1883. (No model.)
To all trhom it may concern Be it known that I, ISAAC W. HEYSINGER, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Suspension-\rVrenches for Gas and other Cocks, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being bad to the drawings accompanying and forming a part of this specification, in which Figure l is a view of the device detached from a cock. Fig. 2shows two of the wrenches suspended one from the other for increasing the length, the top one being attached to the cock of a gas-bracket or similar part. Fig. 3 exhibits the method of applying the wrench preparatory to allowing it to hang suspended for future use. Fig. at shows the device provided with a match-box, K, at its lower end. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal section of the device, made with a sliding handle to vary the length of the drop to suit different heights of gas-fixture to which it is to be applied, and Fig. 6 shows the length of the handle formed into links a a a a to render the same more flexible. The lettering in all the figures is uniform. The invention consists of a wrench provided with a suitable stem or handle adapted to be applied to the cock of a gas-fixture or other like part when the same is too high to be conveniently reached from below for turning the same, the said device being adapted to permanently remain suspended from the said cock for use habitually afterward, or which may be removed and used with other cocks wherever needed. The device is made in various lengths, so as to be suited to gas-fixtures of different heights, and I also so construct the handle portion, by means of which the cock above is turned, that a second one may be similarly hung from the lower part of the first one, and so on continuously, whereby a chain of any suitable length may be formed, and the gas turned on, off, or regulated from the floor without recourse to ladders, torches, or forked poles, as is now the case.
An examination of the drawings will illustrate at a glance the invention and its uses.
It consists of a stem provided with a thumbpiece at one end and a hook or loop at the other, so constructed as to be attached to the i gas-cock above and turn the same when the thumb-piece is turned below.
In the form which I prefer to use I cast the entire device in one piece, preferably of malleable iron, which admits of being bent to conform to gas-cocks of various forms and sizes. At its upper end is an elongated looped portion, B, having its top part bentoverlaterally nearly at right angles, the depth of the bent portion beingapproximately that of the diameter of the neck of a common gascock, such as it is to be used upon.
To attach the device it is, as shown in Fig.
'3, passed over the thumb-piece F of the cock H of the gas-fixture shown at G, in such manner that when turned at right angles and allowed to drop the bent part and theend of the loop will embrace the neck of the' gas-cock and the sides of the loop lie against one side of thethumb-piece. Thewrench willnowhang freely, and it struck by a passing object beneath will swing out of the way, while any rotation of the thumb-piece below will communicate its motion to the cock above.
The thumb-piece D of the wrench may be made of any form desired; but I usually have a neck portion, E, of such form and size that asecond wrench may be hung thereto, just as the upper loop is hung to the cock above, without permitting enough play to interfere with its operation upon the cock which they are to turn.
hile I prefer to use the loop as shown and described on account of cheapness and because it is entirely satisfactory, yet I do not rigidly confine myself thereto, as I sometimes use an open-sided hook similarly bent over, or attach the hook by passingit through an eye in the thumb-piece of the gas-cook; or I attach the same by means of one or more adjustable screws, or in any other well-known mechanical mode. here thecock to beturned ishorizontal instead of vertical, I change direction by anyof the means in common use for accomplishing such objects, either by ball-and-socket, bevel-gear, or other similar devices. In the form shown, however, the invention has proven perfectly satisfactory, and is one of the strongest and cheapest of the various forms in which it may be made.
I make these wrenches of various lengths,
and I also sometimes make the stem portion in two parts, sliding upon each other, asin Fig. 5 at L, the motion being controlled by the setscrew M or a friction-spring, so as to adjust the drop of the wrench to the height of the cock upon which it is to be used. I also provide them with handles of various kinds, and, as shown in Fig. 4, I place a receptacle for matches in the said handle, when desired. Ialso sometimes form the length of the stem in links to increase the flexibility, as shown in Fig. 6.
Having now described my invention, what I desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent 1. A suspension-wrench for gas-cocks, consisting of the stem A, thumb-piece D, and head B, said head being provided with an attachment by means of which the said wrench may hang suspended from said gas or other cock, F, and rotate the same, substantially as described.
2. A detachable wrench for gas-cocks, provided with the loop 13, adapted to pass over the thumb-piece F of an ordinary cock,H, and having a laterally bent or hooked part of said loop 0 adapted to embrace the neck of said gas-cock when suspended therefrom, the whole constructed to operate substantially as described.
3 A suspension gas-wrench provided with a stem, A, cock attachment 0, and thumbpiece D, said thumb-piece being provided with a neck, E, said neck and thumb-piece being of such form as to allow the cock attachment 0 of a similar wrench to be applied thereto withontindependentrotation thereof, substantially as described.
4. A suspension gas-wrench adapted to be attached to and habitually hang suspended from a gas-cock for turning the same, and to swing freely therefrom by means of a flexible joint, B C F, so as to avoid interference with passing objects, substantially as described.
5. A suspension gas-wrench having a stem, A, thumb-piece D, and hooked head-piece B O, for permanently attaching said wrench to the cock F, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
6. An extension-piece for gas-cocks, consisting ofa stem, A, attaching mechanism B O, and thumb-piece D, adapted to be permanently attached to the cock F to extend the cock, so as to place it within easy reach from below, substantially as shown and described.
7. In combination with the stem A of a gascock wrench, the adjustable extension-handle L D, by means of which the length of handle may be varied to suit gas-cocks of difi'erent heights, substantially as described.
