UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM GREGG, OF MASON, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TOYHIMSELF AND JOSEPH A. FOWLER, OF SAME PLACE.
DEVICE FOR HANDLING FRUIT-CANS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 274,591, dated March 27, 1883.
Application filed January 31, 18:33, (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, WILLIAM GREGG, of Mason, in the county of Ingham and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Devices for Handling Fruit- Cans; and" I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specification.
Thisiuvention relates to certain new and useful improvements in the construction of a device for handling hot cylindrical bodies. 7
The object of this invention is to provide a cheap and durable and serviceable implement, especially designed for handling cans in the process of canning fruit, whereby the open: ator avoids all danger of the burning of hands, and consequent accidental dropping of the can.
The invention consists in the peculiar construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specification, A represents a spring-band, one end of which is riveted or otherwise secured to the curved arm a, with which the half-handle B terminates. U is the other half-handle, with a similar curved arm, I), and this arm is slotted, as shown at c, and the end of the band is coincidently slotted, as shown at (l. The clamping-screw D, passing through the two slots, holds the parts rigidly together, and allows the spring-hand to be adjusted to the extent of the said slots, thus adapting it to fit larger or smaller cans. The curved arms a. and I are formed with sides substantially parallel, thus adapting them to receive the ends of the curved band and admit of its ready adjustment in any desired position, by which means a strong metallic band vmay be used in lieu of theleather straps heretofore employed, which are apt to become rotten and rapidly wear out under constant use in boiling water.
The operation of this device is so simple and so plainly to be seen that a description thereof is deemed unnecessary.
I am aware of Patent No. 218,835, issued t Sherwood and Dudley, August 26, 1879, and make no claim to the construction shown thereby.
What I claim as my invention is The combination of the handle B, having a curved end, a, and the band A, one end of which is slotted and the other riveted to said curved end a, with the handle 0, having a curved end, b, with sides substantially parallel, and provided with a slot, 0, and the clamping-screw D, passing through a slot, d, in the band A, and the slot 0 in the curved end b, substantially as described.
WILLIAM GREGG.
