NOTCHING UNIT Emanuel F. Paxhia, Tonawanda, Raymond J. Metzger,
Cheektowaga, and Lynn G. White, Kenmore, N. Y., assignors, by mesne assignments, to Toolset, Incorporated, Buflalo, N. Y., a corporation of New York Application January 4, 1954, Serial No. 401,962 3 Claims. (Cl. 164-50) This invention relates to apparatus for notching sheet material and particularly to a self-contained, unitary device including cooperating notching punch and die means for use in a convention punch press or the like.
Self-contained sheet notching units of this general class are not broadly new, but the apparatus of the present invention provides a more eifective, useful and economical notching apparatus from the standpoints of economy and simplicity of manufacture, low cost and time saving maintenance and servicing, including grinding and replacement of worn parts, and more rigidly and accurately guided parts, the latter also contributing to longer life and cleaner, more accurate notching.
A number of other objects and advantages of the notching apparatus of the present invention will be apparent to those skilled in' this art from a consideration of the accompanying drawing and the following detailed description of one specific embodiment thereof. How- United States Patent.
ever, it is to be understood that such specific embodiment 3 is set forth by way of example only and the principles of the invention may be variously applied. The scope of the present invention is accordingly limited only as defined in the appended claims.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a longitudinal cross-sectional view through one form of the apparatus of the present invention taken approximately on the line II of Fig. 2;
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the notching apparatus of Fig. l; and
Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view of the line III--III of Fig. 1.
Like characters of reference denote like parts in the several figures of the drawings and the numeral 10 designates a base frame member for rigidly supporting the notching die unit and for providing vertically guided support for the notching punch portion of the device.
Base 10 has a fiat die receiving surface 11 at its front portion and a pair of upstanding spaced side wall portions 12 and 13 which extend upwardly from the rear portion thereof. In the present instance the notching die elements themselves comprise side blocks 14 and 15 and a front block 16 which are screwed and doweled to the surface 11 of base 10 to form a female die comprising three sides of a square or rectangular figure which may be employed to form a variety of square-cornered notches in a manner which will be well understood by those skilled in this art.
The numeral 20 designates generally a vertically reciprocable punch holder which comprises a front portion 21 having a hardened steel male punch insert 22 screwed and doweled to its lower surface in registry with the opening formed by the die blocks 14, 15 and 16 for notching cooperation therewith upon vertical reciprocation of the punch holder 20.
The rear portion of holder 20 comprises a reduced width shank portion 25 having hardened steel vertically extending lateral wear plates 26 and 27 screwed thereto.
The overall width of shank 25 with its wear plates 26 and 27 is such as to provide vertical sliding fit of the punch holder 20 in the space formed between side wall 12 and 13 of the notching die base member 10.
The rear faces of side walls 12 and 13 of base member 10 are provided with vertically extending wear plates 30 and 31 which are screwed thereto as shown in Fig. 2 and a detachable retaining plate 32 is secured to the rear face of shank member 25 of punch holder 20 whereby its marginal portion have vertical sliding bearing against wear plates 30 and 31.
Similar vertical wear plates 35 and 36 are secured to the front surface of side wall 12 and 13 of base member 10 and the front punch holding portion 21 of punch holder 20, which in the present instance is of substantially greater width than shank portion 25, is arranged to have its rear marginal surfaces bearing against wear plates 35 and 36 for vertical sliding bearing.
It will be seen from the foregoing that punch holder 20 is accurately and rigidly guided for vertical movement relative to and upon base member 10 with all of the vertical intersliding surfaces including removable and replaceable wear plates which may be of hardened steel, bronze, or other desirable bearing and wear-resisting material.
Referring to Fig. 1, the shank portion 25 of punch holder 20 has a recess 40 in its bottom surface which receives, in the present instance, a pair of compression coil springs 41 which hear at their lower ends against a transverse wall portion 42 of base member 10 to urge punch holder 20 to the upper limit position shown in dotand-dash lines at the upper portion of Fig. l. Upward movement of the punch holder 20 under the impetus of springs 41 is limited by a top bridge or retaining plate 44 which is screwed at its opposite lateral marginal portions to the upper faces of side walls 12 and 13 of base member 10.
The lower portion of base member 10 is formed to provide an inclined discharge chute 43 for discharging scrap material. Base member 10 is further provided with a pair of locating pins 44 and 45 for cooperation with a locating templet or similar locating device in a manner which is well known in this art. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, base member 10 is further provided with lugs 46, 47 and 48 which receive screws or bolts for fastening the notching unit to a punch press, bolster plate or similar work surface.
The normal unstressed position of punch holder 29 is in the dot-and-dash line position shown in Fig. l at the upper portion thereof. Impingement of the ram or slide of a press against the upper surface of the front portion 21 of punch holder 20 moves the same downwardly for notching operations in a manner which is well known in this art.
The manner in which various gaging arrangements may be set up to effect square corner notches of various sizes and rectangular notches along the edges of a work sheet will likewise be obviousto those skilled in this art without further discussion.
Where notches are to be made along the edge of a work sheet, as distinguished from corner notches, means may be provided for stripping the work sheet from the notching punch. Such strippers may readily be mounted against opposite sides of the front portion 21 of punch holder 20.
What is claimed is:
