PUNCH.
. Application and January 11, 1924. Serial No. 685,524.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Fnsnnnron H. JoHN- son, a citizen of the United States, residing at Northboro, in the county of WVorcester and State of Massachusettahaveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Punches, ofwhich the following is a specification, 1 y
My invention relates todevices for severing tickets fromva strip and is known as a boX punch, I
,The essential objects of my invention are to effectively sever and house tickets after severance; to protect the lateral margins of the ticket strip from; the action of the punch; to prevent unauthorized, but facilitatelawful, access to the housed stamps to afiord facile attachment anddetachment-of the housing to;.and from its-mounting; to conveniently position my device; and to at ,tain these ends in a simple, strong, inexpen sive, and easily operable structure.
. .To theabove ends essentially myinven- 'tionconsists in; such parts and in such combinations ofpartsas fall within the scope of the. appended claims.-
,In the accompanying form a part of this specification,
Figures 1 and 2, are a side elevation and a plan view respectively of my noveljdevice, Figures 3 and 4, sections of the same on lines 3-3 and 44. respectively of Figure 1, Figure 5, a section .on line 5-5 of Figure 2, and, i Figure 6, bracket. 7 d v Like. reference characters indicate like parts throughout the views.
In the form of my invention herein shown a cylindrical body or casing 8 comprises a a perspective view of the side wall 9, providedwith aninternal annularshoulder 10 in -.which is seated a top plate 11 fastened to the wall in this instance by-one or more angle plateslQ withattaching screws 13, The bottom of the body consists of a detachable plate- 15 overlapping the edge of the walland provided with a vertical annular flanged portion 17 adjaoent V itsperiphery adapted to slidably-engage the wall, and provided with a central circular levated-portion 18, centrally of which is a hollow post or tube 19. The bore 20 of the post is continuous through the center of the drawings which plate 15except thatthere is an internal annular shoulder .Qlforming a; retracted passage 22 and cavity 23. The upper portion of the upon its lower portion slidably engaging the wall of the bore 20, and provided with-fa conical terminal portion 31. A helical spring 33 surrounding thepin shank 29 has its ends engaging the plug 27 and the head bore 20 against the head portion 31. Around each rod is aspring 38' abutting at one end "30. A plurality of radial hole-s 35in the ,portions 17 and 18,0f the nen1ber, 15 contain rods .36 whoseinnerends project into the against the portion17, and at the other end,
against a shoulder 39 on an intermediate portion of thepin. Bothsendsof; each rod are preferablyrounded, and the outer ends are adapted to register in horizontal grooves 40 in the side wall 9 of-the body. The de- 1 pression of the pin head portion 31 under the influence *of spring 33 normally forces the rods 36 into the grooves 40 to lock-the plate 15 in place. 'By manually pressing the cam head 31 upwardly by means of an 11nplement through the passage 22 the rods under the infiuenc e of springs 38 retract from the grooves 40 andpermit withdrawal of the closure plate 15. 'The rounded outer ends of the rods 36 assist the greinsertion of the'plate 15 in the casing 8 withoutmanipulating thehead 31. A massof sealing wax or other sealing material may be inserted in the cavity 23 to prevent unauthorized access to the pin. 7
- The top plate 11 has a lateral extensionor runway 43 to accommodate which the wall 9 is cut away as at 44. In alignment with the extension the plate 11 has a rectangular opening 46 which slidably receivesa vertically, reciprocating cutter die with which its bounding edgescooperate to sever pieces from a flexible str1p. The die is fasten and depends from a'fiat head 48 preferably .providedwith-a doubly inclined operating face l9. ,In the head are fixed downwardly directed rods'50r which slide in tubes 52 fast at their upperendsin openings 53 in the plate 11 at each side of therun, ;The lower ends of the tubes are closed by portions 55" provided with holes 56 through which loosely pass reduced portions 58 of the rods which form resultant shoulders 59. Disks or washers 61 are riveted to the enlarged lower ends 62 of the rods exterior of the tubes, and serve as stops to the'excessive upper travel of the rods 50 under the influence of helical springs 64; surrounding the rod portions 58 and having their respective ends.
engaging the shoulders 59 and tube closures 55.
The guiding means for the strip to be puncIh-edis a'housingsupported by the run 43 and the top plate comprising a top wall 66 having a marginal finger slot 67 and an intermediate rectangular opening 68 in the path of the die, side walls 69, an end wall 70, and attaching flanges 71 and 72 upon the side walls and end Wall respectively, for the reception of attaching screws 74. The end wall 7 0 at each side of its central portion is cut away to form passageways or openings 7 6. These openings permit the passage therethrough and the preservation of the lateral margins of the advancing flexible strip from which the central portion has been cut away by the die 47. The portions of the strip cut by the die 41-7 are injected through the opening 46 into the casing 8 where they are preserved. The operation is effected by the downward blow of the operators hand upon the head 48. Release of this downward pressure permits the springs 64 to instantly elevate the head to original position. The strip to be operated upon is manually fed to the die by intermittently advancing the former along the IUll 43, with the lateral edges of the strip in contact with g the guide walls 69 of the strip housing.
Integral with the rear of the casing wall 9 1s a vertically disposed oblong block 83 7 provided in its rear face with a longitudinal dovetail groove 84, as shown in Figure 2. A suspension bracket 85, shown in detail in Figure 6, is provided. In detail the bracket comprises a body 86, having in this instance integral with its upper end an acute angularly inclined arm 87 having upon its extremity a perforated attaching lug 88. A similar lug 89 is located upon the bottom of the body. The perforations 90 and 91 respectively of these lugs are for the admission of screws to attach the bracket to the instrument board of an automobile. The outerface of the body 86 has a longitudinally disposed rib 92 having undercut sides 93. This rib registers as a sliding fit in the I groove 84, except that at its lower endthe rib' is broadened to form inclined lateral shoulders 95 which form a stop and sup port for the casing 8. By means of this construction the casing 8 may be quickly and easily lifted out of or dropped into engagementwith the bracket. The acutely angular relation of the arm 87 results in tilting the casing 9 downwardly when the bracket is mounted on the instrument board, thus increasing the visibility and manipulation of the flexible strip with relation to the operator seated in the automobile.
