DOOR HOLDER.

To all to ham it may concern Be it known that I, Mosns H. FAUBERT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of ayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door Holders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawj ings.

This invention relates to certain improvements in door holders and it is an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved device of this general character comprising a swinging bolt or hook member together with means operating upon impact for moving the bolt or hook member into a position to engage and hold the door.

Another object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved device of this general character comprising a swinging bolt or hook member movable to engage a door or the like together with means for holding said bolt or member in such position andwherein means are provided to release said holding means to permit the bolt or hook member to be disengaged from the door.

The invention consists in the details of ,construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my 1111- proved door holder whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler. less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advan- "tageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed. In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein v Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a door holder constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention, the door engaging bolt or hook member being shown in retracted or inoperative position;

Figure 2 is a view partly in section and partly in top plan of the device as illustrated in Figure 1, the working position of the bolt or hook member and the door or the like being indicated by broken lines.

adjacent the outer margin of the door D, fragmentarily indicated by broken lines in Figure 2, when in open position. The forward edge wall 1 of the casing is provided with an elongated slot 2 in which is adapted to work and through which extends a bolt or hook member 3. The bolt or hook member 3 has its opposite end portions substan tially perpendicularly related and the outer end portion of said bolt or hook member 3 carries a head or bumper 4 preferably of rubber. The head 4 is at all times arranged exteriorly of the casing G and the inner portion of said head, when the bolt or member 3 is retracted is engaged within an enlarged portion 5 provided at the adjacent end of the slot 2.

The inner or inserted end of the bolt or member 3 is continued by a plate 6 having its forward and outer edges (0 and 6 substantially at right angles one to the other. The inner edge 0 of the plate is disposed inwardly on a predetermined incline and on an angle obtuse to the edge 6. The inner edge d is on a predetermined angle to the edge 0, said angle being obtuse. The plate 6 is provided with a slot 7 which, when the bolt or member 3 is retracted extends in a direction toward the edgec and on an angle of substantially 45 with respect to the edge 6.

Disposed through the slot 7 and secured to the upper and lower walls 8 of the casing G is a pin 9.

Secured to the end wall 10 of the casing C adjacent to the plate 6 is a leaf spring 11 of requisite tension and which, when the bolt or member 3 is retracted, overlies and has contact with the edge 03 of the plate 6 as is clearly illustrated in full lines in Figure 20f the accompanying drawings.

The forward wall 1 at a point in advance of the plate '6 is provided with an opening 12 through which is freely insertible a plunger 14 the outer end of which being provided with a head or bumper 15 preferably of rubber. The inner or inserted end portion of the plunger 14 is tubular and said inserted end portion is slotted as at 16 for the passage through said plunger of the pin 17, said pin 17 being suitably secured to the upper and lower walls 8 of the casing C. Interposed between the pin 17 and the base of the tubular portion of said plunger is an expansible member 18 herein disclosed as a coil spring which serves to constantly urge the plunger 14 outwardly, the movements of the plunger 14 in either direction being limited by the'slots 16.

\Vlien the bolt or member 3 is in its retracted or inoperative position, the plunger 14 is positioned in advance of the edge I) of the plate 6. lVhen the door D is swung open the same will strike the plunger 14 with sufiicient impact to force said plunger 14 inwardly and into contact with the edge 6 whereupon the bolt or member 3 will be caused to swing outwardly about the pin 5:)- as its pivot. As the member or bolt swings outwardly the spring 11 will come into contact with the edge 0 of the plate whereby it is assured that the bolt or member 3 will assume the position indicated by broken lines in Figure 2150 partially overlie the outer marginal portion of the door D and thereb y effectively hold said door in open position As the bolt or member plate 6' will also have movement to a distance equal to the extent of the slot '1' so that when the bolt or member, 3 is in the position indicated by dotted lines the pin 9 will be positioned at the opposite end of the slot 7 though not illustrated in full lines in Figure 2 but illustrated in broken lines in the same figure.

This movement of the plunger 14 is efi'ected by imposing a quick impact upon the plunger 14 of the door D whereupon the door D is" immediately This outward swinging movement of the door will further swingthe bolt or, member 3- inwardly so that the spring 11 will impose requisite pressure upon the edge d' of the plate 6 to return the bolt or member 3 into its complete retracted position.

The inward swinging movement of the belt or member 3 is positively limited by a stop member 23 herein disclosed as carried by the lower plate 8 of the casing C and bridging the space between the top and bot- 3' swings outwardly the 20 whereby the bolt or member is swung outwardly.

tom plates 8 sufficiently to intersect theinward path of travel. of the bolt or member From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a door holder constructed in accordance with my invention isparticularly "well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will alse be obvious that my in: vention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understoodas limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafterclaimed.

A door holder comprising a casing provided with an opening, a holding bolt extending within said casing through the opening thereof, the inserted end portion of the bolt being provided with a slot, a pin carried by the casing and disposed through the slot of the bolt about which the bolt has swinging movement, said bolt being substantially housed within the casing when retracted, a spring engaging the pivoted end portion of the bolt to impart swinging movement thereto, a plunger extending within the casing and contacting upon movement in one direction with the pivoted end portion of the bolt to impart initial swinging movement thereto, means for locking the bolt when swung into working position, and means for releasing the locking means when the plunger is moved inwardly.

A door holder comprising a casing provided with an opening, a holding bolt extending within said casing through the opening thereof, the inserted end portion of the bolt being provided with a slot, a pin carried by the casing and disposed through the slot 01. the bolt about which the bolt has swinging movement, said bolt being substantially housed within the casing when retracted, a spring engaging the pivoted end portion of the bolt to impart swinging movement thereto, a plunger extending within the casing and contactingupon movement in one direction with the pivoted end portion of the bolt to impart initial swinging movement thereto, said bolt being provided with a catch, a latch carried by the casing and engaging the catch of the bolt to hold the bolt extended, and means carried by the plunger engaging the latch upon inward movement of the plunger to release the latch from the catch.

A door holder comprising a casing provided with an opening, a holding bolt eX- tending within said casing through the opening thereof, the inserted end portion of the bolt being provided wtih a slot, a pin carried by the casing and disposed through the slot of the bolt about which the bolt has swinging movement, said bolt being substantially housed within the casing when retracted, a spring engaging the pivoted end portionof the bolt to impart swinging movement thereto, a plunger extending within the casing and contacting upon movement in one direction with the pivoted end portion of the bolt to impart initial swinging movement thereto, the edges of the belt at the pivoted end portion thereof being angularly related.

A door holder comprising a casing provided with an opening, a holding bolt extending within said casing through the opening thereof, the inserted end portion of the bolt being provided with a slot, a pin carried by the casing and disposed through the slot of the bolt about which the bolt has swinging movement, said bolt being substantially housed within the casing when retracted, a spring engaging the pivoted end portion of the bolt to impart swinging move ment thereto, and an impact operated member for imparting initial swinging move ment to the bolt.

8. A door holder comprising a holding bolt supported for swinging movement, means operating upon impact for imparting swinging movement to the bolt when in either of its positions, and means for locking the bolt when swung into working position, said first named means operating to release said second. named means.

9. A door holder comprising a holding bolt supported for swinging movement, means operating upon impact for imparting swinging movement to the bolt when in either of its positions, said bolt being provided with a catch, and a latch engaging the catch when the bolt is in. working position to hold said bolt against movement, said operating means for the bolt including means to release the latch when said means is operated to effect the retraction of the bolt.
