(cries-19 The present invention relates to dies for-blanking out fiat sheet metal pieces and has particular relation to template dies for this purpose.
In many manufacturing processes, such as in the manufacture of airplanes, :it is desired 'to blank out sheet metal parts with template dies which may be formed inexpensively fromsheet metal. The template dies are used-in conjunction with conventional die sets comprising a heavy metal die shoe anda punch'holder which serve as backings for the template dies during the punching operations.
One such die set may be adaptedto accommodate template dies of various sizesandshapes, and since'such die set must backsmall as well as large templates, it is not feasible to'p'rovide the die shoe which supports the female template with an opening for discharging the blanked outma terial. Accordingly, other means must be provided for permitting such material to be removed from the die set after each punching operation.

The template I6, like 5, may be inexpensively formed from sheet metal stock and thereafter hardened if desired.
In operation, with the die shoe I and punch holder 2 installed in a suitable punch press, the stock sheet of material 20 to be blanked is placed upon the element I6 in the usual manner. Upon closing of the press, the rubber pressure pad will first engage the work piece and press. it downwardly, depressing the female template I6 against the compression of springs I3 until the template rests upon the flat face of die shoe. In further movement the template members 5 and I 6 will cooperate to effect the punching operation, the pressure pad holding flat against the template I5 the edges of the material being blanked, while es in the die shoe and the recesses in the punch holder, thereby expediting manufacture. The pins 42 support foundation plate 43 upon which is mounted, by any suitable means, a male template die or punch 44, and, surrounding the latter, a rubber pressure pad 45. The pad may be cut away, as indicated at 46, to provide openings through which the pins 42 may be inserted through the foundation plate.
The pins 42 may be retained in the recesses by set screws 41, as shown in Fig. 3, the set screws being locked by nuts 48. If desired the openings in the punch holder 39 for receiving the set screws may be spaced on the same centers as the the punching I3 from the stock sheet may drop onto the die shoe.
When the press is thereafter opened, which is the condition shown in the drawings, the springs I3 will elevate the guide pins I2, raising the female template so that a space 2| is provided between it and the die shoe. This space is suflicient to permit easy removal of the punching I9, which may be effected, for example, by a blast of air from tube 22, or, if an inclinable press is being employed, the punching may slide off of the die shoe through the space 2| by action of gravity. Or, asuitable implementmay be employed to push or pull the punching out through the opening 2|. In any case, its removal will not require the operator of the press todisassemble or otherwise move any of the die parts;
- It will be understood that the device described lends itselfto rapid and inexpensive production of sheet metal parts. Not only are .the template dies susceptible of inexpensive and rapid manufacture, but a large number of pairs of such dies may be used interchangeably with one or more die sets comprising a die shoe and punch holder, which die'sets by. reasonof their mass are much more expensive-and require longer periods of time and more skillful workmen to produce. .The. only limitation onthe interchangeability-referred to, in addition to size, is that the templates must be of such'shape' that it is possible to provide them-with pins 1 and I2 in locations which will register with the respective rev cesses- 8 and I I, and which will leave a space, such as indicated at 2| between adjacent guide pins I2 through which a punching may be extracted.
In this connection it will be understood that the die shoe and punch holder may be provided with any number of such recesses 8 and. I I, so as to accommodate templates of different sizes and shapes.
In the" modified construction shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the recesses 32 in die shoe 3| for receiving pins 33 that support female template die 34, are provided with shoulders 35 for cooperating with enlargements 36 on the pins to'limit the upward movement of the latter. Springs 31 for raising the pins 33 and the die 34 carried thereby, are retained in the recesses 32 by plugs 33., This provision of enlargements 36 and cooperating shoulders 35 assures parallelism ofthe die 34 with the uppersurface of the shoe 3I when the die is raised, and prevents possible binding of the parts which might result'from one pin 33 being raised more than another.
The punch holder 39 has recesses ceiving pins 42, in vertical alignment with the recesses 32 which receive pins 33. This permits using the same drill plate for drilling the recess- ,recesses for receiving pins 33 and 42, and hence.
the same drill plates may be utilized in forming them. The operation of the device shown in Figs. 2 and 3 will be substantially the same as tive of the inventive principles involved and that these principles may be otherwise embodied without departing from the spirit of my invention orthe scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
.1. .In a die set for blanking sheet metal pieces, a die shoe and a punch holder, a unit comprising a male template die and a rubber pressure pad extending therearound and a foundation sheet for the template die and pad backed by the punch holder, pins having riveted ends securing the male template die to the foundation sheet and detachably retained in recesses in the punch holder,. a female template die detachably supported upon die elevating pins guidingly received in recesses in the die shoe, the female template die having recesses receiving upper end portions of said elevating pins, and'springs in said first mentioned recesses for raising the elevating pins to lift the female template die above the die shoe, the springs permitting the female template die to be pressed against the die shoe by the rubber pressure pad upon closing of the die set.
