L- KINZBL- LADDER ATTACHMENT. No. 274,448. Patented Mar.20.1883.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LAFAYETTE KINZEL, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
LADDER ATTACH MENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 274,448, dated March 20, 1883. Applicaton'led December 1, 1882. (No model.)
.Tooli whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LAFAYETTE KINZEL, a citizen of the United States, and aresident of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fire-Ladders, of which the following is a speciiication.
My invention relates to improvements in Ladders, more particularly speaking re-lad ers.
The object of my invention is to provide roller devices on the upper ends ot' long heavy ladders, whereby they may be handled with ease and speed when i necessity requires, the construction and arrangement of which devices will be fully set forth in the following description of the accompanying drawings.
Figure l is a broken elevation of a tire-ladder with my improved roller devices at its upper ends resting against or straddling an outside corner of a building. Fig. 2 is asimilar View, with the rollers resting against an inner corner of a building. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the roller devices. Fig. 4 is a central sectional elevation of the same in position on the end of one of the side bars of a ladder. l
A represents a ladder of ordinary construction. having the side bars, a a, and rounds b.
B represents the roller devices attached to the upper ends of the side bars, a a, of the ladder. j
C is a box or socket of roller device B, having a stud or short shaft, D, projecting laterally therefrom, on which shaft a roller, E, is mounted in such a manner as to project pariially beyond the end of the ladder. Boxes C tit upon the upper ends of side bars, a, and are detachably secured in position, with'the rollers inside or outside, as required, by thumb-screws c. By arranging the rollers directly on stud-bearings which project lateraly from the sides of the boxes or sockets, they can be conveniently attached to and detached from the extreme ends of the side bars of the ladder to permit changes from one ladder to another; and, further, the boxes orsockets can be reversed from one side to the other for the purpose of bringing the rollers into such position that they are made to project laterally either on the inside or the outside ot' the side bars. The invention will be found very useful and advantageous. The ladder is placed in an inclined position, with the rollers resting against the Wall, or on yor in a corner of a building, as shown, and then pushed upward, or elevated to position by pressure upon the other end thereof.
Painters7 ladders or house-ladders may also be provided with rollers, as herein described, which, in resting against the walls or other objects, would obviate injury or defaciner them, which frequently occurs in the use of the unprotected ends, as heretofore.
I clai xnl. The combination, with a ladder, of the sockets O, provided at their sides with lateral studs on which are journaled rollers E, said sockets being detachably secured to the eX- treme ends of the side bars ot' the ladder, and adapted to be changed from one bar to the other for bringing the rollers either on the inner or outer edges of the side bars, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with a ladder, of the sockets C, provided with thumb-screvvsc, and at one of their sides with studs on which are jourualed rollers E,said sockets being detachably secured to the extreme ends of the side bars of the ladder, and adapted to be changed from one bar to the other to reverse the arrangement of the rollers, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
' LAFAYETTE KINZEL. Witnesses:
JNO. E. JONES, LOUIS ERIEHL.
