Description

(Model.)
0. S. RUSSELL.
, MAGNETIC PLASTERQ No. 272.904. Patented Feb. 27, 1883.
N. wrrzns Pholo-Lilhogmpber. Washi n nnnn c4 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES S. RUSSELL, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
MAGNETIC PLASTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 272,904, dated February'27, 1883.
Application filed November 22,1882.
To all whom it may concern Bcit known that I, CHARLES SUMMERS RossELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in thecounty ofPhiladelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Magnetic Plasters; and I do hereby declarethe following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use thesame, referencebeinghad totheacoompanying drawing, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved magnetic plaster for local application for the alleviation of pain, and for all the purposes for which mildly-stimulant adhesive plasters are used.
My invention consists of a plaster spread upon two thicknesses of fabric, between which sheets or thicknesses of said fabric are a number of small magnets of iron or steel, said magnets being held in position either by stitching around them or by some suitable adhesive substance holding the sheets or thicknesses of fabric together.
Referring to the drawing, A is a plaster spread upon one side of two thicknesses of fabric, and B are magnets held between the sheets or thicknesses of said fabric. The presence of the magnets may be tested by a com pass. A
(Model) I claim the entire novelty of a plaster, for local application for the alleviation of pain, containing iron or steel magnets, the placing of said small magnets in a plaster so constructed as to be adhesive to the skin being entirely new and original with myself.
I am aware that plasters have been constructed containing pieces of zinc and copper; but they are entirely different, and are supposed to generate voltaic and not magnetic electricity, and they will not affect the compass in the least.
I do not claim any specific kind of medicated plaster; nor do I claim, in the abstract,'the employment of magnets in the treatment of diseases, as they have been used in so-called magnetic garments and by mesmerists and others.
I am aware of Gollinss Patent No. 116,562, July 4, 1871, for voltaic plasters, and I do not and cannot use voltaic plates of copper and zinc, and 1 do notclaim to produce voltaic action of any kind.
What I do claim as new, and desire to secure byLetters Patent, is
The combination of magnets with medicated plasters, substantially as described and shown.
In witness to above claim I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 16th day of November, A. D. 1882.
