Description

G. B. NORTHRUP, BUCKLE ATTACHMENT.
(No Model.)
Patented Feb Q 20, 1883.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE B. NORTHRUP, OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO W. & E. T. FITCH, OF SAME PLACE.
BUCKLE ATTACHM ENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 272,748, dated Febr uary 20, 1883.
Application filed December 26. 1882.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE B. NORTHRUP, of New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticnt, have invented anew Improvement in Buckle Attachments; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same,
and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in
Figure 1, a perspective "iew, showing the attachment as applied to the buckle; Fig. 2, a longitudinal central section, showing the strap 1 attached; Fig. 3, a plan view of the attachment without the loop.
This invention relates to an improvement in a device for attachinga common tongue-buckle to the end of a strap, the object being to avoid the doubling of .the strap around the tongue-' bar; and it consists in the construction of the attachment, as hereinafter described, and more particularly recited in the claims.
A represents a common buckle-frame, and 2 B a tongue hinged to the rear bar, C, too well known to require further description.
The buckle attachment is constructed with a cross-bar, D, at the rear to lie upon the under side of the strap. The two sides E F turn up each side the strap, and are connected by a bridge, G, which forms the tuck-loop. The two sides extend forward, turned downward and backward, uniting in a tongue-shaped piece, H, beneath the strap. The forward bend is placed over the tongue-bar of, the buckle, then the strap I run in against the tongue-bar, as seen in Fig. 2, and a rivet, a, introduced through the strap and barD at the rear, and the rivet I) through the tongue H 4.0 and the strap forward and near the tonguebar, as seen in Fig. 2. This brings the buckle in its proper relation to the strap, and so that the free strap runs through the buckle, will readily pass beneath the loop G, and thus se 5 cure the buckle firmly to the strap and close at the end of the standing strap, and because of the metal fastening, which embraces the (No model.)
tongue-bar of the buckle and the strap, being thinner than the strap itself the fastening is made much neater than can be done by doub- 5o from the rear bar forward over and around the tongue-bar and return beneath the strap, 5 as seen in Fig. 3. I therefore do not wish to be understood. as limiting my invention to the necessary employment of the loop G. The loop G, standing between the rear bar, D, and the fastening-tongue H at the front, the fastening being open between these two points, enables the casting of the device without core, the bend at theforward end being made so that the two sides draw inward to the center sufficiently far to enable the bend to be formed in the mold.
I claim- The herein-described device for attaching buckles, consisting of the frame composed of the two sides E F, connected by a cross-bar, I), at the rear, said two sides extending forward and bent downward and backward and brought together at the center to form the tongue H, the said bend to embrace the tonguebar of the buckle, and the said tongue H and bar 1) pierced for riveting to the strap, substantially as described.
2. The herein-described device for attaching buckles, consisting of the frame composed of the two sides E F, connected by a cross-bar, D, at the rear, said two sides extending forward and bent downward and backward and brought together at the center to form the tongue H, the said bend to embrace the tonguebar of the buckle, and the said tongue H and barD pierced for riveting to the strap, the said sides connected by a bridge, G, to form a buckle-loop for the strap, substantially as described.
GEO. B. NORTHRUP.
