Description
Oct. 25, 1955 Filed May 25 1953 Wesley M. Mason INVENTOR.
United States Patent 2,721,679 ATTACHMENT FOR GARMENT HANGER Wesley M. Mason, Salt Lake City, Utah Application May 25, 1953, Serial No. 357,034
1 Claim. (Cl. 223-98) This invention relates to supports for garments and more particularly to a device adapted to be used in combination with a conventional wire garment hanger.
The primary object of this invention resides in the provision of an attachment for a garment hanger which will enable trousers and the like to be more readily supported on the garment hanger in a manner which will inhibit the creasing or wrinkling of the trousers.
A further important advantage of this garment hanger resides in the provision of means for maintaining the shoulder pads of a coat or the like in a supported position thus maintaining that garment free from creases and wrinkles.
The construction of this invention features an elongated body support member having downwardly depending tongues which receive the crossbar of the wire hanger therebetween. The body member has spring-like end portions which resiliently engage the supporting arms of the wire hanger to maintain the body member in position.
Still further objects and features of the invention reside in the provision of an attachment for a garment hanger that is strong and durable, simple in construction and manufacture, capable of being produced from various readily available materials such as metal and synthetic plastics, and which is very simple to install, and which is relatively inexpensive thus permitting a wide distribution.
These, together with the various ancillary objects and features of the invention which will become apparent as the following description proceeds, are obtained by this attachment for a garment hanger, a preferred embodiment of which has been illustrated in the accompanying drawings, by way of example only, wherein:
Figure l is a side elevational view showing the attachment installed on a conventional wire hanger;
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the attachment comprising the present invention;
Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view as taken along the plane of line 33 in Figure l and being shown on an enlarged scale for greater clarity.
With continuing reference to the accompanying drawings wherein like reference numerals designate similar parts throughout the various views, reference numeral generally designates a conventional wire hanger of the type formed by bending a single piece of wire to form angular supporting arms 12 and 14 interconnected by a crossbar 16. One of the supporting arms 12 terminates in a suspending hook 18, the other supporting arm 14 terminates in coils wrapped around the neck portion of the supporting hook 18. The hanger attachment comprising the present invention is generally indicated by reference numeral 22 and includes an elongated body portion 24 having a plurality of pairs of spaced downwardly extending rectangular shaped tongues 26 and 28 appended thereto. It is to be understood that when the attachment 22 is formed from a suitable synthetic plastic material such as a thermosetting resin or the like the N 2,721,679 Patented Oct. 25, 1955 tongues 26 and 28 may be integrally formed with the body portion 24.
The body portion'24 terminates in end portions 30 and 32 which extend upwardly and convergingly so as to be resiliently in engagement with the supporting arms 12 and 14. It is to be noted that in an unstressed condition the end portions 30 and 32 extend at a greater angle relative to the body member 24 than is formed by the supporting arms 12 and 14 relative to the crossbar 16. The end portions 30 and 32 carry pairs of tongues 34 and 36 and 38 and 40 respectively.
The body portion 24 has integrally formed therewith flanges 42 and 44 which extend arcuately downwardly from the body portion 24 so as to provide an arcuate convex surface on which a pair of trousers can be placed when the garment hanger and attachment are utilized. Further, the flanges 42 and 44 rigidify the structure against bending when the trousers are emplaced, the body portion 24 rigidifying the entire garment hanger 10 due to the engagement of the end portions 30 and 32 with the supporting arms 12 and 14. The end portions 30 and 32 are provided with flanges 46 and 48, and 50 and 52 respectively. The curvilinear portions of the attachment 22 as indicated at 54 and 56 are not flanged so as to more readily permit the flexing thereof. Thus, the flanges 42 and 44 terminate short or at the beginning of the end portions 30 and 32.
In use, the attachment 22 is inserted on the crossbar 16 with the crossbar received within the space between the tongues 26 and 28. In the construction of this invention this space between the tongues 26 and 28 may be of such size as to insure a frictional resilient fit of the crossbar 16. The supporting arms 12 and 14 are received within the spaces between the tongues 34 and 36 and 38 and 40 respectively, the end portions 30 and 32 having been pressed inwardly in order to seat the supporting arms 12 and 14. Thus, the end portions 30 and 32 will press upon the supporting arms 12 and 14 to maintain the crossbar 16 in a substantially horizontal position, the body member '24 also rigidifying the entire construction. An article of clothing such as a pair of trousers may be readily positioned between the supporting arms 12 and 14 and on top of the body member 24 in such manner that the garments will be relatively free from creases or wrinkles. The end portions 30 and 32 will readily support the shoulder pads and like of coats and other similar garments whereby the shape of the garment will be adequately maintained and enhanced.
Since from the foregoing the construction and advantages of this garment hanger are readily apparent, further description is believed to be unnecessary.
However, since numerous modifications will readily occur to those skilled in the art after a consideration of the foregoing specification and accompanying drawings, it is not intended to limit the invention to the precise embodiment shown and described, but all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the appended claim.
What is claimed as new is as follows:
An attachment for a garment hanger having angular shoulder supporting arms connected by a crossbar and having a suspending hook comprising an elongated body member having pairs of spaced locking tongues projecting therebelow, said body member being adapted to seat upon said crossbar with said crossbar being received between said tongues, said body member having resilient arcuate end portions integral therewith, said end portions being spaced from each other substantially the same distance as the space between said supporting arms adjacent said crossbar, said end portions extending upwardly and convergingly inwardly, said body member including said end portions being substantially wider than said crossbar,
said end portions being adapted to resiliently engage said supporting arms, said end portions each having a pair of spaced parallel locking tongues thereon adapted to receive the supporting arms therebetween, said end portions being adapted to support theshoulder portions of a garment, said body member having arcuate downwardly projecting flanges at the side edges thereof for providing a convex surface to maintain garments supported by said body member free of wrinkles while reinforcing said body References Cited in the file of this patent UNITED STATES PATENTS Zetlin Jan. 8, 1935 Coflin Nov. 13, 1951
