Description

W. H. JOHNSON.
Shovel-Plow.
No. 27.188 v Patented Feb. 14, 1860.
r'lagzziaz wy/zm UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM H. JOHNSON, OF RICHMOND, ARKANSAS, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND J. D. BELLAH, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT- IN PLOWS.
' Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 27,188, dated February 14, 1860.
To all whom it may concern:
7 Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. JOHNSON, of Richmond, in the county ot'Sevier and State of Arkansas, have invented a new and Improved Plow; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification- Figure 1 being a plan of my improved plow; Fig. 2, a side elevation thereof; Fig. 3, a longitudinal vertical section thereof in the plane indicated by the line a; 00, Fig. 1.
Like letters designate corresponding parts in all the figures.
The beam A is constructed of a draft-block, a, and a strip of iron, I), bent into a U form, the ends thereof lapping over the rear end of the block co, notched to receive them, all substantially as shown in Fig. 1. The two parts are united by bolts 0 0. The strip 1) thus bent forms two sides with an oblong space between of the desired width. In this space is located a circular hoop or ring ofirou, which has two apertures, h h, through its opposite sides, for the reception of the share standard or shank E, so that the latter will slide endwise therein. Through the opposite sides of the ring, at about a quarter of a circle from the apertures h h, are two sets of holes, on m, uniformly situated in opposite pairs in respect to the center of the ring. The share-standard E is also provided with a set of holes, 6 2', arranged in a longitudinal row, as represented. Then through the opposite sides of the beam-strip b are formed three opposite pairs of holes, the middle pair being for the reception of a bolt, 1, to secure the share-standard E in the beam, and
the other two pairs being situated in a line with the middle pair, and equidistant therefrom, for the reception of bolts or pins n n to secure the ring D in the beam. Thus when the center bolt, 1, is withdrawn the share-standard may be moved endwise in the ring and held by any one of its holes t '5, thereby adjusting the depth to which the share 12 runs, as illustrated in Fig. 3, and when the bolts 12 n are withdrawn the ring may be turned on the bolt l as the axis, and held by any pair of the holes at m, thereby turning the sharc'standard to difierent angles and adjusting the share to any angle required, as illustrated in Fig. 2. The use of the opposite double sets of holes, at m, and two bolts, to n, is not necessary, one set of holes and one bolt being all that is absolutely required; but the double set of holes and two bolts make the whole stronger, and are therefore preferable.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. Constructing the beam of the draft-block a and bent strip of iron 1), arranged and combined as herein specified.
In witness that the above specification of my improved plow is true and correct I hereunto set my hand this 15th day of July, 1859.
W. H. JOHNSON.
