Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Josnri-I O. @058, a citizen of the United States, residing at Adrian, in the county of Bates and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clevises; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to clevises for plows and other agricultural implements.
It is my aim to provide a wider scope of adjustment, horizontally as well as vertically, to simplify the construction and reduce the cost of manufacture.
It is also my object to produce a clevis which may be used either on a narrow metal beam or on a wider wooden one.
Further objects will become apparent from the following description.
The invention consists in the features of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter described and specified in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing, illustrating the preferred embodiment of my invention: Figure 1 is a side view of the clevis assembled. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a detailed View of one of the arcuate plates, Fig. 4 is a detail view of a modified form of arcuate plate for use to permit the attachment of the clevis to either a metal or wooden beam, and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the clevis on a smaller scale.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, 1 designates the two similarly con structed bars or metal strips, each having a straight portion 2 adapted to be attached to the opposite lateral faces of a plow beam 3, said bars also having diverging portions t, the extremities 5 of which are bent into planes parallel to the plane of the portions 2. Each of the end portions 5 is formed with a key slot 6 therein to receive corresponding headed lugs 7 on the ends of the arcuate adjustment plate 8. The extensions of the key slots are arranged vertically so that when the lugs are engaged therewith and the plate 8 turned to a horizontal position, the latter will be locked to the bars 1, preventing the latter from spreading while, at the same time, said arcuate plate, is pivotally connected to said bars and can turn between them for the purpose to be hereinrespectively, passed through the slots 9 and one of the holes 10. Said portions 2, where they project beyond the end of the beam 3, are provided with registering holes in which is fitted a pin or bolt 11.
A pair of bars 12, shaped similarly to the bars 1, are arranged in a vertical plane, the parallel portions thereof being provided with holes 13 in which a pin 14 is fitted. This pin is also passed through one of a series of openings 15 in the arcuate plate 8 which is arranged between the parallel portions of said bars 12. Between the extremities 16 of the bars 12, there is pivotally mounted an arcuate plate 17 similar to the plate 8. Said plate 17 is arranged between the parallel portions 2 of the bars 1 and is provided with a series of openings 18 through one of which the pin 11 is passed. As illustrated, the bars 12 are preferably made in one piece, which is bent at the middle, as at 19 in Fig. 1. Any suitable connecting device may be attached to this portion of the bars 12, such as the U-shaped piece 20.
It will be observed that a very wide range of adjustments in the cutting width and the cutting depth of the plow is possible by means of the two similarly constructed arcuate bars 8, and 17 and the bolts or pins 13 and 11. The manner of bolting the parts together makes my clevis very rigid, and the use of two adjusting pins allows for the use of smaller pins and openings in the arcuate bars which makes the device stronger. Furthermore, the provision of two pins prevents a part of the clevis from dropping to the ground or against the feet of the draft animals, when an adjustment is being made, because only one of the pins need be removed at a time.
As illustrated in Fig.' 4:, the arcuate plate 17, which is adjustably connected to the bars 1, may be made double, that is with two spaced apart and similarly perforated parts 19. The spacing is such as to permit the portion 2 of one or both of said bars 1 being passed between the plates 19 when the clevis is attached to a narrow metal beam. When the device is attached to a wider wooden beam, both of the bars 1 may be ar ranged outside of the plates 19.
I claim:
1. A clevis of the character described, comprising a horizontal member and a Vertical member, each adjustably connected to the other at two points, at one point for horizontal adjustment and at the other point for vertical adjustment.
2. A clevis of the character described, comprising a horizontal member and a vertical member adjustably connected together at two points, at one point for horizontal adjustment and at the other point for vertical adjustment, each member having a slotted adjusting bar pivoted thereto in order to permit of said horizontal and vertical adjustments.
3. A clevis of the character described, comprising a horizontal member and a vertical member, one of said members consisting of two bars having parallel portions arranged in juxtaposition to one another, diverging portions, and an adjusting plate arranged between the extremities of said diverging portions, means of connection be tween said adjusting plate and the other member, and means of connection between said parallel portions and said other member for the purpose specified.

comprising a horizontal and a vertical member, each of said members consisting of two bars having parallel portions arranged in juxtaposition to one another, diverging por tions, and an adjusting plate pivotally connected between said diverging portions, and means of connection between the adjusting plate of each member and the parallel portion of the other member.
5. A clevis of the character described, comprising a horizontal and a vertical member, one of said members consisting of two bars spread apart at their ends and having key-slots in their extremities, an adjusting plate having headed lugs on its ends fitting and interlocking with said key-slots, and adjustable means of connection between the other member and the adjusting plate of the first mentioned member.
6. A clevis of the character described,
comprising a horizontal and a vertical member, each of said members having an adjusting plate connected to the other member and longitudinally pivoted on its own member for the purpose specified.
7. A clevis of the character described, comprising a horizontal and a vertical member, each of said members having an arcuate adjusting plate connected to the other member and longitudinally pivoted on its own member.
