UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
PETR FLICKINGER, 0F HANOVER, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN HARVESTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 27,120, dated February 14, 1860.
To all whom 'it may concern.-
Be it known that I, PETER FLTCKINGER, of Hanover, in the county of York and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Mode 0i' `Attachment of Tongues of Harvesters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, forming part of this specitication, in the several figures ot which similar characters of reference denote the same part.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of frame and tongue. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section through the tongue and frame.
The nature of the invention consists in having the tongue of the harvester passing through the draft-frame,through an opening in the rear part of said frame, and secured by a washer on the rear ofthe tongue, which has a curved face fitting into a bed formed in the rear crosspiece for its reception, the said piece being cut away on both sides around the opening, so as to leave the tongue free to conform to the vertical movement of its front extremity without binding. The iront cross-beam ot' the frame is slotted for the reception of the tongue, and has a strap of metal curved over said slot, by these means allowing a free vertical movement ot' the tongue; and there is a shoulder on each side of the tongue in front of the crossbeani of the frame, against which the pressure is thrown in backing, thus throwing the strain on the shoulders and the cross-beam.
In the drawings, F is the frame, having the opening O in the rear cross-beam and the slot S in the front one, through which passes the tongue T, secured by ball-washer'B at the rear. ce is the strap over slot S, and c o the shoulders on tongue T. The tongue T, being attached by passing through the opening 0 and slot S of the frame, admits of its moving up and down freely, and having the shoulders o on the tongue they press against the crossbeain of' the irainein backing, and thus throw the pressure or strain on them and the front cross-beam ot' the frame.
I claim- The tongue T, constructed with the shoulders o c and ball-washer B on the rear eX- treinity, in combination with the front and rearcrossbeainsot' the frame, having the openings O in the one and slot S in the other, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof [have hereunto signed my name before two subscribing witnesses.
PETER FLICKINGER. Witnesses z GEO. PATTEN, J OHN S. HOLLINGSHEAD.
