DISPLAY AND SHIPPING DEVICE FOR ANNULAR OBJECT OR THE LIKE Filed July 16, 1953 mmvrm BY ma United States. Patent Ofifice 2,710,687 Patented June 14, 1955 DISPLAY AND SHIPPING DEVICE FOR ANNULAR OBJECT OR THE LIKE Earl B. Whitehead, Norwich, Conn., assignor to Atlantic Carton Corporation, Norwich, Conn., a corporation of New York 1 Application July 16, 1953, Serial No. 368,328
3 Claims. (Cl. 20645.26)
This invention relates to improvements in display and shipping devices.
The principal object of the invention is the provision of a device which is formed from a preformed blank to provide a device for shipping and displaying objects such as annular objects which may be a coil of fish line,
and other objects of my invention as will become more readily apparent as the description proceeds, my invention consists in certain novel features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of .parts as will be hereinafter more particularly pointed out in the claims hereunto annexed and more fully described and referred to in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein:
Fig. l is a blank for forming into a display device embodying the novel features of the invention;
Figs. 2 and 3 are front and rear elevational views of the display device formed from the blank of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a side elevational view of the device shown in Figs. 2 and 3;
Fig. 5 is a sectional elevational view on the line 55 of Fig. 2; and
Fig. 6 is a sectional perspective view to illustrate certain locking features of the device.
Referring now to the drawings more in detail, the invention will be fully described.
A blank is represented by 2 and will be formed from cardboard or the like. In describing said blank reference will be made to dash lines which are bending lines of the blank and to solid lines which represent slots or slits through the blank.
Rear and front walls numbered 4 and 6 respectively are relatively bendable on bending line 5 at the upper side of said rear wall. Outer side walls 8 are bendable at opposite side of the rear wall at 9 and inner side walls 10 are bendable at 11 on outer edges of said outer walls 8.
Tabs 12 are bendable at 13 on outer edges of the inner side walls 10 and said tabs are provided with slits 14.
A lower outer wall 16 is bendable on at the lower edge of the rear wall 4 and a lower inner wall 18 is bendable on 19 at the outer edge of the lower outer wall 16.
A strut 20 is bendable at 21 on the edge of the inner wall 18 and has a tongue 22 on the outer end thereof.
The front wall 6 is provided with a lower slit 24 through which the strut 20 is passed in set up position of the parts and with side slits 26 to receive the tabs 12 in said set up position.
Slits 28 and 30 of the rear wall 4 provide an easel 32 bendable on a line 31. Said easel has a slot 33 to receive the tongue 22 of the strut 20. Other slits 34 in the rear wall 4 provide keepers 36 which have adjacent inner ends arranged to engage in notches 38 at the sides of the strut 20. When the easel 32 is bent outwardly relative to the rear wall an elongated slot is provided between the slots 28 of rear wall 4.
In setting up the device, the front wall is brought over onto the rear wall as in Figs. 2 and 5.
The outer side walls 8 are bent upwardly and inwardly and the inner side walls 10 are bent relative to the walls 8 towards the front wall 6 and the tabs 12 are inserted through the slits 26 to lie between the front and rear wall, as indicated in Fig. 2.
The lower outer wall 16 is bent upwardly and inwardly and the lower inner wall 18 is bent relative to wall 16 and towards the front wall 6. The strut is inserted through the slit 24 of the front wall and through the slot in the back wall formed by the slits 28 as the easel 32 is swung outwardly relative to the back wall.
The tab 22 of the strut 20 is inserted through the slit 33 adjacent the outer free end of the easel 32. The inner adjacent ends of the keepers 36 engage in the notches 38 at opposite sides of the strut whereby the strut is held in the position shown. The device will be supported by the easel in the position shown.
The outer and inner walls 8 and 10 at the sides of the device and the lower outer and inner walls 16 and 18 in cooperation with the front wall provide passageways represented by P in Figs. 4 and 5 for the object to be associated with the device.
Such an object which may be in the form of an annulus as for instance, a coil of fishline or the like, is placed on the front wall 6 and the inner side walls 10 are passed through the opening of the coil for inserting the tabs 12 in the slots 26. Likewise the strut 20 and inner wall are passed through the opening of the coil for insertion of the strut through the slit 24.
In this manner, the annulus or coil is confined in the passageways formed by the front wall and the lower, outer and inner walls and the outer and inner side walls and front wall.
For shipping and storage purposes, the strut and easel may be superposed on the back wall. Otherwise for display purposes, the easel and strut may be engaged as shown.
The invention may be embodied in other specific forms without departing from the essential characteristics thereof. Hence, the present embodiments are therefore to be considered in all respects merely as being illustrative and not as being restrictive, the scope of the invention being indicated by the appended claims rather than by the foregoing description, and all modifications and variations as fall within the meaning and purview and range of equivalency of the appended claims are therefore intended to be embraced therein.
What it is desired to claim and secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
l. A unitary device for holding an annular-like object for shipping and display and other purposes comprising, a back wall and a front wall superposed thereon, said front wall provided with vertically extending tab receiving slits adjacent and inwardly of opposite vertical edges and a horizontally disposed strut receiving slit adjacent and upwardly of a lower horizontal edge thereof, said back wall provided with elongated vertical horizontally spaced slits and a lower slit forming an elongated leg hinged to said back wall adjacent and downwardly of the upper edge thereof and said vertical slits forming a slot therebetween, a lower outer wall hinged to the lower edge of said back wall having a lower inner wall hinged thereto, a strut hinged to the outer edge of said lower inner wall extending through the lower slit of the front wall and the slot of the back wall positioning said lower outer and inner walls over and in relatively angular cooperative relationship with said front wall to provide a passageway therebetween for surrounding the lower portion of an annular object disposed on said front wall, outer side walls hinged to outer vertical edges of said back wall having inner side walls hinged thereto, tabs hinged to outer edges of said inner side walls insertable in the tab slits of the front wall positioning said outer and inner walls over and in relatively angular cooperative relationship with said front wall providing passageways therebetween at opposite sides of the front wall for surrounding opposite side portions of an annular object on said front wall.
2. A device set forth in claim 1 wherein said strut and back wall at the sides of the slot therein are provided with engageable locking means and said strut and leg are provided with engageable means whereby said leg is held by said strut in device supporting position.
3. A device set forth in claim 1 wherein the lower outer wall is of relatively greater width than the lower inner wall hinged thereto whereby opposite side edges of the outer wall incline to the inner wall and the outer side walls are of relatively greater height than the inner side walls hinged thereto whereby upper and lower edges of the outer side walls incline to the inner side walls.
