Description
`,water from boats of all classes, so as to obviate UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH P. GRAHAM, OF CHESTER, KENTUCKY.
BlLeE-WATER EJEcTo R.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 271,060, dated January 23, 1883.
Application filed September 23, 1882.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, JOSEPH P. GRAHAM, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chester, in the county of Mason and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and valuable Improvementin Ejector-Pl ugs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and op eration of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making a part of this speciiication, and to the letters and-figures of reference marked thereon.
The figure of the drawing is a vertical section.
The object of this invention is to provide means for automatically discharging the bilgethe necessity of pumping or hailing out the water.
To such end I provide a pipe, A, which is screwed or otherwise tightly fitted in an opening formed through the bottom of the boat. The lowerand smaller end, c, ot' this pipe is bent and turned toward the stern ofthe boat, while inthe upper end, which is provided with a valve-seat, B, is arranged a downwardlyopening check-valve, C. The upper end ofthe pipe has the annular exterior iiange, D, which tits against the bottom of the boat so as to steady the device. When there is no water in the boat the upward pressure ofthe Water within the pipe will raise the valve and close (No model.)
it against its seat. When, however, the water iu the boat rises above the valve and the boat is iu motion the valve will drop and ope-n and the water be drawn ott1 bythe vacuum created in rear ot' the small end ofthe pipe.
A curved tube leading' from a hole in the bottom of the vessel and opening toward the stern of the same into a horizontal pipe secured under the bottom ofthe vessel and extending in the direction ofits length has been provided with a valve operated by a screw-rod from either ofthe decks or some other support prior to my invention; but this device is not wholly automatic, while mine is, it being necessary in the construction just mentioned to operate the screw-rod to start and stop the device.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- The combination, with the pipe A, flanged at its upper end and bent at its lower end, which extends toward the stern of a boat, below the bottom ot thelatter,of the downwardly-A opening automatic check-valve arranged in the upper end of the pipe, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my naine in the presence ot' two witnesses.
JOSEPH PATTERSON GRAHAM. ivitnesses:
W. W. BALL, J. B. NoYEs.
