Specification of Letters Patent.
REGULATED SIPI-ION.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN Fnnnnno, a subject of the King of Italy, residing at Angels Camp, in the county of Calaveras, State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Regulated Siphons; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this application.
This invention relates to improvements in siphons used for draining water from mines,
wells, or any other similar reservoir, the object of the invention being to produce a self priming regulated siphon whereby as fastas the water rises to a predetermined level in the mine or other reservoir, the siphon will continue to operate and drain the same without the necessity of repriining the siphon or otherwise regulating it each time that the water in the reservoir falls below a predetermined level. A further object of the inventionis to produce a simple and inexpensive device and yet one which will be exceedingly effective for the purposes for'which it is designed.
These objects, I accomplish by means of such structure and relative arrangement of parts as will fully appear by a perusal of the following specification and claim.

Figure 1 is a side elevation of the complete siphon and pipe in position. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the valve mechanism of the siphon detached. Fig. 3 is a sectional view showing a float controlled siphon pipe inlet.
In constructing my improved invention I first provide a supporting standard comprising legs 1 supporting a top ring or disk 2 disposed vertically in which is a pipe 3 having a removable cap 4 such pipe 3 being open at its lower end. Pivoted in the top edge of the ring 2 as at 5 is an arm 6 provided with a float 7 adapted to maintain itself on the level of the water in the reservoir, the other end of said arm 6 projecting below the pipe 3.. At this point such arm 6 is provided with a valve comprising a block 8, there being an annular groove 10 disposed in the end of said block 8 into which is interposed a rubber or similar washer 11. The groove 10 is adapted to receive the lower edge of the pipe 3 under circumstances as will appear and then the block 8 will form a closure for said pipe.
Leading from the pipe 3 over any de sired elevation is a pipe 12 which at its lower end will, in practice, project below the water level on which is disposed the float 7 and hung on a hook 13 at the lower end of the pipe 12 is a cup 14, the outer edge of which is disposed up around and in a higher plane than the lower end of the pipe 12.
To start the siphon to operating the supporting standard is disposed in the water at such a point as will cause the float 7 to ride on the lowest level of the water desired and such float when in such position will cause the valve member 89 to close the pipe 8. Of course when the siphon is first inserted in the water, the level will be higher than the above described level and thus will then keep the valve open and so in order to start the siphon to operating, a pin 15 is projected through a projecting member 16 on the disk or ring 2 which pin is provided with a hook 17 which is hooked under the arm 6, and then a wing nut 18 on the outer end of the pin 15 is screwed up to pull arm 6 to such position as to close the pipe 3. The water is then filled into the pipes 3 and 12 through a valve 20 disposed at the highest point of the pipe 12 until they are full of water, the lower end of the member 12 having been, for the purpose, closed by a cork or other stopper 19. When said pipes 3 and 12 are full of water, the member 18 is unscrewed and the hook 15 disengaged from the arm 6 which leaves the float 7 free to operate said arm and its connected valve; then the cork19 is removed and the water starts to siphon through into the cup 14 and thence overflow such cup. The cap 4 of course will have been replaced in the meantime. As will be seen the cup 14 keeps the water in such cup at a higher lever within said cup than the lower end of the pipe 12 and when the float 7 reaches the lowest predetermined level it will automatically close the pipe 3 and thus when once started the members 3 and 12 will be at all times automatically kept full of water and will not permit the entrance of any air therein.
Then when the water level rises again and opens the valve 8-9 the siphon will commence to operate again without the necessity of priming since as will be seen it is full of water under all conditions.
The legs 1 are threaded as shown and are capable of being screwed vertically through the ring 2 in order to fix the position of said ring at a suitable height to insure the correct operation of the float 7 to keep the water level at such a point as may be desired.
From the foregoing description it will be readily seen that I have produced such a device as substantially fulfils the object of the invention as set forth herein.
hile this specification. sets forth in detail the present and preferred construction of the device, still in practice such deviations from such detail may be resorted to as do not form a departure from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention what I clalm as new and useful and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1s:
A device of the character described coinposed centrally of said ring, a supportinglnember secured to said ring and to said pipe, a float controlled arm pivoted on said ring and having means on its lower end forming a normal closure for said pipe, another pipe leading from said verticalpipe and projecting to a point in a lower plane than the lower end of said vertical pipe, as described.
