Application March 20, 1952, Serial No. 277,592 2 Claims. 01. 1s--11s This invention relates to a combined scraper and soap foam applicator therefor and an object of this invention is to provide soap foam in front of the scraper for cleaningincrusted kitchenware articles, the soap foam serving to soften or partly dissolve the incrustations prior to the scraping action.

Another object of this invention is to provide a long handle on which the scraper may be slidably mounted and the soap container may be removably mounted, whereby the device may be usedfor' cleaning or wiping in places where it is diflicult to reach with the hand.

Another object of this invention is to provide a body of sponge rubber, one end of the body being slit and communicating with an opening internally thereof to permit a cake. of soap to be deposited therein, the slit. also serving to receive the head portion or rectangular soap retaining frame portion of the handle in concealment therein.

Another object of this invention is to provide a combined scraper and soap foam applicator, comprising an elongated handle having slide bars in parallel contacting relation and having a porous body thereon, an elongated scraper having arms at one end slidable on the bars the scraper being mounted below the porous body, the other end of the scraper being unsecured to the slide bars, the scraper being adjustable to bring its free scraping end below and close to one end of the porous body to permit soap foam passing through the porous body to be deposited on an article being scraped, prior to the scraping action on the article.

With the above and other objects in view, the invention will be hereinafter more particularly described, and the combination and arrangement of parts will be shown in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims which form part of this specification.

Reference will now be had to the drawings, wherein like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which:

Figure 1 is a top plan view of the combined scraper and soap foam applicator showing a clasp and clasp holding member in operative position above a scraper.

Figure 2 is a side view of the combined scraper and soap foam applicator shown in Figure l, the porous body being shown in dot-and-dash lines.

Figure 3 is a top plan view similar to that shown in Figure l, the porous body being shown in dot-and-dash lines.

Figure 4 is an end view of the porous body showing a slit at one end thereof.

Figure 5 is a cross-sectional view taken on line 5-5 in Figure 3.

Figure 6 is a plan view of a hollow clasp holding member.

Figure 7 is a top plan view of the clasp shown in Figures 1 to 3, inclusive, the head being removed.

Figure 8 is a side view of a modified arrangement of the combined scraper and soap foam applicator, and drawn on an enlarged scale.

In the illustrated embodiment of the invention, the numeral 10 indicates a combined scraper and soap foam applicator therefor, comprising an elongated shank 11, comprising

12, 12 positioned in parallel contacting relation. The shank 11 terminates at one end in a hollow frame or handle 13.

At the other end of the shank 11 is a hollow head 14 of rectangular cross-section and of a size adapted to receive a small cake of soap 15. A porous body 16, preferably made of sponge rubber, has a slit 18 at one end. The slit communicates with an opening 19 internally of the body 16, and of a size to receive the head portion or rectangular soap retaining frame portion 14 and the cake of soap 15, in concealment therein.

For the purpose of detachably securing the porous body 16 to the head 14, I have provided a clasp 20 comprising two

21, 22, which are pivotally secured in unitary relation. The arm 21 has two transverse extensions 23, each having an aperture 24, the apertures being in alignment. The arm 22 has two pintles 25, in engagement in the aperture 24.

21, 22, are jaws 26 having teeth 27, the arms being curved to cause the teeth to come in alignment. It is to be noted that at the pintles 25, the arms are spaced apart so as to frictionally engage the shank 11 to permit sliding motion of the clasp 20 on the

As best shown in Figures 2 and 7, the jaws 26 of the clasp 20 are in spaced apart relation when in gripping position on the porous body 16. This spaced apart relation of the jaws 26 is determined by the cireumscribing holding member 28 which is slidably mounted over the jaws 26 to hold the jaws closed. In this closed position, the jaws are spaced apart sufficiently to grip the porous body 10 without damage thereto and while closing the slit 18. The jaws 26 are caused to grip the body 16 from opposite sides.

It is to be noted that an elongated oblong guideway 31) is formed between the pivotal portion of the arms of the clasp 20 to permit slidable movement of the clasp on the arms without any wobbly motions. It is to be noted that the oblong shaped guideway 30 prevents any rotation of the clasp 20 in relation to the

12, 12, to within a distance from the front or bodily intact end wall 37 of the porous body 16 to cause the scraping edge 38 of the scraper 35 to be in substantial alignment with the front end portion of the cake of soap 15 in the porous body 16. This arrangement insures that soap foam or chemical foam will be deposited on the scraping edge of the scraper prior to the scraping operations due to the compression of the front edge portion of the porous body 16 by the user.

This compression is due to the fact that when the combined device is in use, the user places the device at an angle with relation to the article being cleaned, and by pressing down on the front edge portion of the porous body, the front edge portion is compressed until the Patented June 14, 1955 scraping edge of the scraper comes in direct contact with the article being cleaned.

As shown in Figure 8, we have provided a modified arrangement whereby the scraper 35 is in spaced apart relation from the lower side of the porous body 16, to provide a storage space 39, wherein a supply of soap foam may be deposited.

In the preferred embodiment we provide a plurality of apertures 40 in the scraper 35 and through which the scraped material is discharged. The lengthwise side edges of the scraper have lateral ribs 41 to reinforce the scraper against bending.

It is to be noted that While we have described the use of the combined article as necessitating a cake of soap, that we may use another dissolvable detergent which produces a foam or lather When water is applied thereto.

In accordance with the patent statutes we have described and illustrated the preferred embodiment of our invention, but it will be understood that various changes and modifications can be made therein without departing from the spirit of the invention as defined by the appended claims.

We claim:

1. In a combined scraper and dissolvable chemical foam applicator therefor, comprising an elongated handle having carrier bars in parallel relation, an elongated scraper having tubular sleeves at one end and being frictionally slidable on said bars, one end of said handle having a hollow rectangular soap retaining frame portion adapted to receive a cake of dissolvable chemical, a porous 3 body of rectangular cross-section having a slit end and an opening in said porous body and in alinement with said slit, said opening being of a size to receive said rectangular soap retaining frame and said cake of dissolvable chemical in concealment therein, a clamp slideable on said bars and having pivoted jaws engageable with the upper and lower faces of said porous body to close said slit, the scraping body portion of said scraper being supported by said carrier bars, said scraper being adjustable to bring its scraping body portion below and close to one end of said porous body to permit dissolvable chemical foam passing through said porous body to be deposited on an article being scraped, prior to the scraping action on said article, said scraper being in spaced apart relation from said porous body to provide a storage space therebetween, and said scraping body portion having apertures permitting discharge of said scraped material from said storage space.

2. In a combined scraper and soap foam applicator, a sponge rubber body having an internal pocket terminating in a slit portion directed outwardly of said body, an elongated handle having carrier bars in parallel relation and being of substantially oblong cross-section, said handle having a hollow rectangular soap retaining frame at one end, a cake of soap mounted in said hollow frame and both placed in said pocket with said handle extending from said sponge rubber body, a clamp having pivoted jaws mounted over the slit end portion of said body, said jaws being of a depth permitting said jaws to compress said sponge rubber body and embrace an inner wall of said hollow frame, and a ring frictionally slidable over the jaws of said clamp to retain said jaws in clamping engagement with said sponge rubber body between said frame wall and said bar of soap, said clamp having an oblong shaped guideway permitting sliding motion of said clamp on said handle while preventing rotation of said clamp in relation to said handle.
