Mor.
Application filed September 30, 1922. Serial No. 591,521.
To aZ whom, t may concern.'
Be it known that l, MAURICE J. KRoLL, a citizen of the United States, residing at lltica, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented certainl new and useful lmprovcmonts in Mops, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to improvements in mops, and more particularly to aholder for mopping devices.
An important object of the invention is to provide a holder embodying means for wringing or drying the mop which when not in usc is so positioned as to in no manner interfere with the normal operation of the mop.
l further object of the invention is to provide a mop holder from which the mopping element may be readily removed for replacement.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is extremely simple in its construction and arrangement, durable in service, and a general improvement in the art.
These and other objects I attain by the construction and arrangement shown in the accompanying drawings wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention and wherein like reference characters designate like parts throughout.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a sectional view taken through a mop constructed in accordance with my invention and showing the wringing position of the drain plate in dotted lines;
Figure 2 is a fragmentary plan view showing the wringer plate in extended position;
Figure 3 .is transverse sectional view taken through the mop; and
Figure 4 is an enlarged detail View of the hinge employed.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 10 indicates a holder plate of any desired construction having secured thereto at one end thereof a handle member 11 embodying a flattened portion 12 secured to the plate and a socket portion 13 disposed at an angle to the handle portion and adapted for the reception of the handle 14 of the mop. The plate 10 is provided upon its lower surface at the sides and at the end thereof remote from the handle 11 with clips or holders 15 adapted to receive the edges of and maintain in position a mopping element 16. The mop 16 is preferably constructed by employing a plate or back 17` substantially the same shape as the plate 1() and securing thereto transversely arranged strips of cloth 18 by Wire stitching 19 engaging the cloth substantially centrally of the width thereof so that the edges of the cloth depend from the plate 17. The edges of the plate 17 engage between the clips 15 and the plate 1() and are held in engagement with these clips by means of a spring catch 20 secured to the handle member 11 and which engages the rear edge of the plate 17. This catch member 20 is arranged upon the inclined portion of the handle member 11 so that upon withdrawal of the catch the plate 17 may be withdrawn from the clips 15 by movement p-aralleling the holder plate 10.
Connected to that end of the plate 10 remote from. the handle 11 by means of a reversible hinge 21 is the corresponding edge of a drainer pla-te 22, substantially the same shape as the plate 10. The reversible hinge 21 may be of any suitable construction, being shown in the present instance as comprising a pair of hinge elements 23, one of which is pivotally connected to the plate 22' and the other of which is pivotally connected to the plate 10, the free edges of these hinge elements being pivotally connected together as indicated at 24. The plate 22 has a plurality of small openings 25 formed therethrough for a purpose presently to appear, and has attached to its free end a handle 26,
. the end of which is arranged at an angle to the platecorresponding to the angle of the handle member 11 to the plate so that when the late 22 is folded against the plate 10 the andle members may lit snugly against one another. The upper surface of the handle member 11 is provided with a catch member 27 which is riveted toV the handle member and which h as a resilient end 28 adapted to engage in an indentation 29 formed in the handle 26 of the plate 22 when the plate 22 is positioned upon the upper surface of the plate 10 to hold the plate 22 when in this position against movement, the reversible hinge permitting sulicient longitudinal movement of the plate 22 to permit en, ,1fagement4 of the end 28 in this indentation.
In the usel of the mop and during mopping operations the plate 22 is arranged upon the upper surface of the plate l0 and held in position by the catch 27, interfering in no manner with the operation of the mop. lV hen the mop becomes saturated and it is desired to dry and rinse the same, the handle 26 is engaged with the hand and released from the catch 27 and the plate 22 reversed so as to bring it into engagement With the mopping portion of the brush 16 Where upon the application of pressure, the Water is forced from the cloth strips 18, passing through the apertures 25 of the plate 22 and draining the brush 16. While the plate 22 is in this position, the brush may be rinsed by immersing the same in Water, the openings 25 permitting the passage of the` Water for engagement with the brush and at the some time holding the dirty Water contained in the strips of cloth upon the surface of the clothy where they are readily accessible to the rinse water. The brush 16 may be removed and substituted for by a bristle brush or any other desired construction when so desired, the construction of the brush in no manner entering into the invention except in so far as concerns that portion of the structure permitting engagement thereof` with the clips 15 and catch 20. It will be obvious that many changes are possible in the construction as hereinbefore set forth Without in any manner departing from the spirit of my invention and l accordingly do not limit myself to such specific structure except as hereinafter claimed.
ll claim 1. In a mop, a holder plate, a handle secured to the holder plate at one end thereof and havinnr a shank portion arranged at an angle to t 1e plate, mop plate holding clips carried by the side edges of the plate and the end of the plate remote from that to which the handle is secured and adapted for the reception of the edges of the mop plate, and a catch arranged upon the inclined portion of the handle and Withdrawable beyond the line of movement of a mop plate being inserted to or removed from said clips.
2. A mop head comprising a plate provided at one side thereof with means for securing thereto a mopping element, a handle secured to the plate at one end thereof, a plate similar in shapel to the first named plate having a reversible hinge connection with the opposite end thereof, and a handle carried by the free end of the last named plate, the last named plate being perforated.
3. A mop head comprising a plate provided at one side thereof with means for securing thereto a, mopping element, a handle secured to the plate at one end thereof, a plate similar to the first named plate having a reversible hinge connection with the opposite end thereof, a handle carried by the free end of the last named plate, the last named' plate being perforated, and a catch carried by the handle of the first named plate and engageable with the handle of the second named plate when the second named plate is arranged upon that face ofthe first named plate remote from the mop attaching means.
lln testimony whereof l hereunto ax my signature. l
