UNITED STATES ANTOINE \V. MARTIAL,
PATENT OFFICE.
OF HOUSTON, TEXAS.
COT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 270,961, dated January 23, 1883, Application filed November 28, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ANTOINE W. MARTIAL, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Houston, in the countyof Harris and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Cot, of which the following is a speciflcatiomreference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to cots; and it has for its object to provide a simple, durable, inexpensive, and eificient device, consisting of separable pieces that can be readily and conveniently disconnected and arranged in compact form for transportation from place to place.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved cot in positionready for use. Fig.2 is alongitndinal sectional view on the line 00 00, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken through one of the end supports. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the parts composing my improved cot packed in position for transportation.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the frame of my cot, and B the flexible bed-bottom. The former consists of a number of separable and independent pieces comprising two longitudinal top rails, (J G, which are supported by X-shaped end portions, D D. The top rails,'O 0, each consist of two end rods, 0 0, having a lateral cylindrical socket, c, and connected by one or more intermediate rods, a all of these rods being joined by cylindrical sockets a as shown. The X-shaped end supports,D D, each consists of an X-shaped cylindrical socket, d, and four connecting-rods, (1 which fit in the arms of the socket d. The two bottom rods (1 rest on the ground or floor, while the. two top rods d have their ends fitted in the sockets a. The ends of the different rods which enter the cylindrical sockets are preferably provided with metallic ferrulesE, as shown.
Thefiexible bottom B is provided with a series of eyes or eyelets, b, at its side edges, which eyes are hooked over a corresponding series of hooks, a, on the rails O 0 when the frame is put together.
The advantages of my invention will be readily understood and appreciated. When it is desired to pack the cot for transportation the flexible bottom is first removed from the frame, after which the latter is taken apart and the pieces thereof placed compactly together in a bundle with the flexible bottom. In this cot there are no pivot-joints to become worn or get out of order, and sho'uld any of the separable pieces become broken or damaged they can' be readily replaced.
If desired, the ferrules E may be screwthreaded to enter screw-threads on the interior of the sockets, as shown at S, Fig. 2.
I claim as my invention- 1. A cot consisting of separable and independent pieces having no hinge or pivotjoints, and comprising a frame and removable flexible bed-bottom, as set forth.
2. The combination, in a cot, with a separable frame, of a flexible bed-bottom independent and removablein connection with theframe, and suitable means for fastening the bottom to the frame, as set forth.
3. The herein-described cot-frame, comprising longitudinal top rails formed of separable pieces, the end ones of which are provided with lateral sockets, and substantially X-shaped supports formed of a central radial socketpiece and separable rods to be fitted therein, as set forth.
4. Ina cot, the combination of longitudinal top rails having lateral sockets at their ends, end supports comprising central radial socketpieces and rods to be fltted therein, and a flexible bed-bottom having a series of eyes at its edges to engage a corresponding series of books on the top rails, as set forth.
In testimony thatIclaim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ANTOINE WILLIAM MARTIAL. Witnesses:
