Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAML. RAY AND M. R. SHALTERS, OF ALLIANCE, OHIO.
COMBINED CHAIR AND CRIB.
Specification of Letters Patent No.
that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a side sect-ional view of our invention, taken in the line m, Fig. 2. Fig. 2, an inverted plan of ditto.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two gures.
The object of this invention is to combine a rocking chair and crib, in such a manner that the device, by an extremely simple adjustment, may be used in either capacity equally aswell as if it were made for either purpose only, thereby forming an economical and very convenient article of household furniture.
The invention consists in the employment or use of a supplemental folding back and a folding seat applied to the chair and used in connection with a sliding leg and rocker frame, substantially as hereinafter described, whereby the desired end is obtained.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct our invention, we will proceed to describe it.
A, represents the bottom of the chair, which may be of a solid plank or board, or formed of a frame, having a cane or rush filling, similar to the cane or rush-bottom chairs in use. To the under side of this bottom A, two parallel bars a., a, are attached; to one end of which are secured the legs b, b, which support one side of the chair; said legs having a rocker c, attached to their lower ends. The bars a, c, are connected by a traverse bar CZ, through which a bolt c passes into the bottom A, or into any permanent solid part connected therewith. The bars a, a, d, form a frame which is al lowed to turn freely on the bolt e.
The bars a, a, serve the purpose of guides, between which bars f, f are fitted and allowed to slide freely, said vbars being retained in proper position by clips f and the bar d. The bars f, f, are connected near their outer ends by a traverse bar g, and near the ends of the bars f, f, legs 71 are attached, having a rocker z', at their lower ends, the legs h, and rocker supporting the 27,069, dated February 7, 1860.
side of the chair opposite to that supported by the legs b, and rocker c.
The traverse bar g, has a thumb screw y', passing through it; said screw passing into the bottom A, and preventing the casual sliding out of the bars f, f, from between the bars a, a, and also preventing the turning of al1 the bars on bolt e. To the front edge of the bottom A, of the chair there is a supplemental bottom B attached by joints 0r hinges 7c. This bottom B is allowed to fold over on the bottom A, and fit snugly upon 4 it as shown clearly in Fig. l.
C, is the back of the chair, which may be constructed in any of the usual forms. This back is attached to the permanent bottom A, and to each side of said back and to uprights Z, arms D are attached. To the front part of each arm D, a supplemental arm E is attached by a bolt or pivot m. The arms E may correspond in shape to the arms D, and to the disengaged ends a back.or traverse frame F is attached, the latter being formed of uprights n, a, to which a traverse piece o is secured.
When the device is used as a rockin@ chair, the supplemental bottom B is folded over on the bottom A, and the supplemental arms E are also folded back so that they will be by the side of the arms D, D, and the back or frame F against the inner side of the back, C, as shown in black in Fig. l. The bars f, f, are shoved inward to their full extent between the bars a, c, as shown in black in Fig. 2, and secured in such position by the thumb screw j. In order to convert the chair into a crib, the thumb screw y', is withdrawn and the bars a, a, d, f, f, g, with the rockers c, z', are turned around at right angles to their former'position, and the bars f, f, are withdrawn out some distance from between the bars a., a, as shown in red, in Fig. 2. The supplemental bottom B is then turned over and outward from the bottom A, and rests on the traverse bar g of the bars f, f, said bar g, being secured in proper position by screwing the thumb screw j into the supplemental bottom B. The supplemental arms E, E, are also turned over and outward from the bottom A, the uprights n, n, resting on the supplemental bottom B as shown clearly in red Fig. 1. The crib is thus formed and provided with rockers and suitable side and end guards; the back C, of the chair forming one end guard, the traverse frame F the other, and the arms D, E, the sides. We
would remark that the legs b, L, may be sekby Letters Patent, is,
The permanent bottom A, supplemental bottom B, permanent arms D, and supple- 10 mental arme E, -With traverse frame F, at-
tached, and the turning and. the sliding leg and rocker frames, formed of the bars a, a, d,
`and f, f, g, the Whole being combined and arranged as, and for the purpose set' forth.
