I UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIc EDWARD MILLER, JR., OF EVANSVILLE, INDIANA.
COMBINED CRIB, CRADLE, AND SETTEE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 548,005, dated October 15, 1895.
Application filed June 3, 1895- ,Serial No. 551,554" (No modeld To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWARD MILLER, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at Evansville, in the county of Vanderburg and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Crib, Cradle, and Settee and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in a combined crib, rocking cradle, and settee, and the object of my invention is the provision of a simple, durable, inexpensive, and portable article of furniture which can be used as an attachment to a bed to provide a crib for small infants, which can be used as an ordinary crib, and which may be used as a settee or a rocking cradle and performs all the functions in-a proper and perfect manner, and which by reason of its simplicity, attractiveness, efficiency, and portability will prove a practicable and desirable article for the household.
The invention consists of a combined crib, cradle, and settee embodying novel features of construction and combination of parts, substantially as disclosed herein.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my invention adapted for use as a crib attachment for beds shown as applied to a bed. Fig. 2 represents a side elevation. Fig. 3 represents an end elevation with the parts in the position they are placed when the article is used as an ordinary crib. Fig. 4 is a similar View with the legs and folding side section folded or closed. Fig. 5 represents a bottom plan view. Fig. 6 represents a detail view of one of the clamping-brackets used for hinging and securing the legs. Fig. 7 represents a side elevation of my improvements with the parts adjusted to form a rocking cradle. Fig. 8 represents a perspective view of the rockers and frame forming the rocking attachment removed, and Fig. 9 represents a detail view of a modified form of clamping de- V1ce.
In the drawings the letter A designates the bottom of my improved crib, cradle, and settee.
B designates the closed side section, and D designates the side section hinged at E to the bottom of the crib and adapted to be closed and secured by catches F.
When the device is to be used as an ordinary crib and when used as a crib attachmentfor a bed, the hinged section is folded under the bottom and retained by said catches F. To one of the end sections is secured the angle-iron H, the purpose of which is to attach the device to a bed when desired to use the article as an attachment for small infants. From the corners of the bottom depend the legs J, to which are connected the adjustable section J, and the adjustable sections are socured at any desired adjustment by means of the set-screws K, which engage any one of the series of openings or notches L in the leg, and thus the device can be adjusted to any height desired and as circumstances require. The legs are hinged to the bottom by a peculiar construction of bracket, which consists of the attaching-plate M, having depending lug N, provided with an opening 0 and an intersecting angular groove or grooves P, and the plate Q, which is secured to the leg by means of a screw R, passing through the opening of the two plates and which causes the rib or ribs S on plate Q to engage the groove or grooves P on the plate or lug N and clamps the plates firmly together and secures the legs in a vertical position to support the crib or settee, and thelegs are retained in a closed position by the clamping action of the plates through the medium of the screw, the rib S being forced and held in the groove P by the action of the screw B.
When it is desired to use the improvement as a crib attachment, the hinged section is folded under and secured, as also the front legs, and the angle-iron is caused to engage the side rail of the bed, and thus an efficient crib is made perfectly adapted for small infants, which are required to be convenient to the mother. In folding the front legs the screws R are first loosened to permit the separation of the parts N and Q sufficiently to allow the withdrawal of the ribs S from the grooves P of the said parts, respectively, when the legs can be swung laterally and held in the desired folded position by again tightening the screws, as will be readily understood.
lVhen it is desired to use the article as an ordinary crib, both sets of legs are opened and adjusted to the desired height and the hinged section is closed and secured, and when it is desired to use the device as a settee the hinged section is simply folded under and secured, and a perfect settee is provided.
In the form of my invention shown in Figs. 7 and 8 I provide a rocking cradle, and I employ the connecting-rods T, to the ends of which are secured the rails U, carrying the rockers V, said rockers being braced to the rods T by means of the two braces W. From this construction it is evident that I provide a perfect rockingcradle attachment, and to secure the attachment in place I provide the rails U with tenons X, which engage sockets in the cradle proper, and at the other ends I form the rails with kerfs Y, which engage the legs J, as shown in Fig. 7, and to hold the rails from movement I provide the hook-andstaple fastening device Z, and it will thus be seen that I provide a perfect rocking cradle.
It will be seen that I produce a combined crib, cradle, and settee which can be quickly adjusted to perform any of the desired functions and which will prove entirely efficient and practical for all of the purposes for which it is intended.
I claim- 1. Acombined crib, cradle and settee, consisting of the bottom, the side and end closed sections, the adjustable legs secured to the rear of the bottom, the combined hinge and clamp carried by the legs and consisting of the plates having the interlocking grooves and rib, and the clamping screw passing axially through said plates, and the angle iron for connecting the device to the bed.
2. A combined crib, cradle and scttee, consisting of the bottom, the rigid and hinged sections, the adjustable or folding legs, at one side, the combined hinge and clamp consisting of the plates having the interlocking grooves and ribs and the clamping screws passing axially through openings in said plates intersecting said grooves and ribs and means for attachment of said device to a bedstead.
3. Acombined crib, cradle and settee, consisting of the bottom, the side and the end rails or sections connected to the bottom, the plates secured on the under side of the corners of the bottom and having the groove or intersecting opening, the plate having the rib adapted to fit the groove of the other plate and having the opening, the binding screw passing through said opening, and the adjustable legs connected to the plate having the rib, and means for the attachment of the device to a bedstead.
4. The combination of the body portion, legs engaged by said recesses whenthe rocker frame is in position the end rail having the recesses and tenous for engaging the body portion, the bars connecting the end rails, the
hooks on the rails for engaging eyes on the body portion, the rocker frame carrying the rockers and secured to the end rails and the braces leading from the rockers to the connecting bars of the end rails.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
