Description

LIFTING JACK.
Patented Jal-n. 16, 1883.
UNITED STATES Aram FFICE.
EDWIN J. EVANS, OE LEAVENWORTH, KANSAS.
LI FTING-JACK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 270,649, dated January 16, 1883.
Application tiled J une Q6, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, EDWIN J. EVANS, aciti zen of the United States, residing at Leavenworth city, in the county ot' Leavenworth and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wagon-Jacks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and tigures of reference marked thereon.
The present invention has relation to certain new and useful improvements in wagon-jacks;
and the object thereof is to provide such a devicev that will possess great leverage-power, readily and easily operated, as well as simple in its construction, and having the required strength. These several objects I attaiuby the construction substantially as shown inthe drawing, hereinafter described, and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing, which represents a perspective view of my invention, A designates a. suitable standard, connected to a support or base, a.. hy mortising or otherwise, as found most desirable.
To each side ofthe standard A, nearits lower end, are pivoted arms B, the upper ends ot' said arms being pivoted in turn to the lower end ofthe lit'ting-harC, having the usual steps, b. Thelit'tingbar C has connected to it by screws, bolts, or other suitable means, a metal yoke,c,'which passes over the end of the standard A, to guide and steady the lifting-bar when being elevated or lowered.
Upon each side ofthe standard A isa metal strap, (I, the forward ends thereof having a series of notches, c, adapted to tit over the bolt f, between the armsB and lifting-bar C. This construction enables the height ot' the liftingbar C to he regulated by raising the notched ends ofthe stra-ps and bringing any one of the series of notches to engage withthe bolt, thus adapting the lifting-jack to a variety of work without requiring so great 'a leverage-power upon the cam-lever I), to which the straps d are pivoted. I do not, however, desire to be understood as confining myself to such construction, as in place of the notched ends of the straps the bolt may pass directly through the metal straps.
The cant-face of the lever D bears against the standard A, and by pressing down upon it the lever will draw the metal straps toward it, and also the arms and lifting-bar, raising the latter and the object upon itto the required height.
In addition to one or more steps b upon the lifting-bar C, it may be provided with an adjustable step, E, secured to the har by a bolt, g, passing through the step and through one of a series of holes, h, in the lifting-bar.
.By removing the holt g and replacing it in another one ot' the holes h the height of the step E is changed, thus adapting it to t any unusual height of axle, or for other lifting purposes where the steps b could not be used.
It will be seen that a jack is provided that can be readily used for all lifting purposes, and possesses great power, strength, and durability, and is not likely to become broken or get out of order by any undue strain or weight.
Having nowfnlly described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a lifting-jack, the combination, with the standard A, pivoted arms B, and lifting bar C, having-yoke c, ofthe straps dand calnoperating lever D, pivoted together and constructed to operate substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
Z. In a lifting-jack, the standard A, pivoted arms B, and lifting-bar (J, in combination with the cam-lever D and plates or straps d, pivoted to said lever, and at their oppositeend having notches e, adapted to engage with the boltf, as set forth.
3. In a liftingjaclt, the lifting-bar C, having stationary step b, in combination with the adjustable step E, as and for the purpose specilied.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
EDWIN J. EVANS.
