UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN 'Il MASON, OF STREATOR, ILLINOIS.
LlFTlNG-JACK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of" Letters Patent No. 294,398, dated March 4, 1884.
Application led April 26,l 1883'. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, JOHN T. MASON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Streator, in the county of La Salle and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lifting-Jacks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure lis a top plan view of my invention; Fig. 2, a side elevation, and Fig. 3 an end view, thereof.
The present invention has relation to certain new and useful improvements in lifting-jacks; and the object thereof is to provide such a device as will be strong and durable and possessing increased leverage-power with ease of adjustment,"while the labor in pulling, hoisting, and lifting wagons and holding them elevated to repair and lubricate themis materially reduced, rendering the device more effective and more easily handled. These several objects I attain by the construction substantially as shown in the drawings, and hereinafter described and claimed. Y
In the accompanying drawings, A represents two standards, parallel with each other and arranged a suitable distance apart, and are provided with a series of bolt-holes, a. rIhese standards A are connected together at their top by a cleat or cross-block, b, and at their lower ends to abase, B, by a brace rod or rods, c, bolted thereto and to the standards 5 also, braces cl, secured in like manner. Thebase B is mortised a portion of its length to receive a ratchet-bar, O, secured thereto in any suitable manner, and connected to the base, upon each side of said ratchet-bar, is a guide, D, to
l prevent the lower end of a fulcrum-bar, E, from lateral displacement, and thus retain it in engagement with the teeth of the bar C. This fulcrum-bar E is providedl at its lower end with a suitable handle, e, for raising it from contact with the ratchet-teeth when the angle or height lof the bar is to be changed. The outer or upper end of bar E is provided with a hook, f, which engages with an eye or staple, g, .upon the under side of a lever, F, said lever having secured to its end a suitable hook, h, for receiving a rope or chain connecting -with a weight for'lifting by the pressing down of the lever, which raises the bar and engages it with the next tooth of the ratchet. The lever F, as well as the bar E, passes between the standards A, the lever having a series of holes, i, to correspond with those in the standards, through which is passed a bolt or rod, 7c, to connect the lever to the standardsat the desired height and form a pivotal point or fulcruin upon which the lever turns.
Having now fully 'described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a lifting-jack, a suitable base provided with standards, a ratchet-bar, and guides., in combination with a lever adj ustably connected to the standards, and having connected to it a suitable bar adapted to engage with the ratchet-teeth, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
