UNITED STATES SHANNON MGGUFFIN, OF RISING SUN, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN LlFTl NG-JACKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 125,065, dated March 26, 1872.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SHANNON McGUFFIN, of Rising Sun, in the county of Ohio and in the State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lifting-Jack; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, referenee being had to the accompanying drawin g andto the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a liftingjack, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order-to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same,I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, which represents a perspective view of my liftingjaek.
A A represent two upright posts, connected at their lower ends, and having a foot-piece, B, between them, which extends on both sides, as shown. At a suitable height between the two posts A A is pivoted a movable leg, 0, which is thrown down on the ground to steady the machine. D is the lever, provided with the pin a, which passes through, extending on both sides, and is laid in notches b b on the posts A A. There is a number of these notches in the edges of said posts, so
that the lever may be adjusted at any height desired, the end of the same passing between the two posts, as shown. In the lower portions of the posts A A are a number of holes, d d, for the adjustment and insertion of the ends of the bail G, which passes over the lever D, and catches in notches e e on the upper side of the same.
By the adjustment of the lever D and hail G the jack may be arranged for any-sized wagon or carriage, and it may be used as a stump-puller by the use of a clevis and chain, f, as shown in dotted lines.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The combination of the posts A A, having notches b b and holes (1 d, the foot-piece B, movable leg 0, lever D, with pin aand notches 0 e, and the bail G, adjustable in the perforations in the posts, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing,
MATHIAS R. HALL, JAMES S. EADES.
