UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE- EDWARD A. PEASLEY, OF PANCOA STBURG, OHIO.
Ll FTING-JACK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 322,315, dated July 14, 1885.
f Application filed November 28, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWARD A. PEASLEY, of Pancoastburg, in the county of Fayette and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lifting-Jacks; and I do hereby declare the following tobe a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in lifting-jacks; and it consists in the combination of the standard having ratchet-teeth with a slotted toothed hanger which is rigidly secured at its upper end to the upper slide, a second slide which is connected to the hanger through its slot by a suitable bolt, and the operating-lever provided with teeth upon its inner end, so as to engage with the teeth of the hanger, and suitable pawls which are connectcd to the slide and which engage with the ratchets on the standard, as will be more fully described hereinafter.
The object of my invention is to provide a lifting-jack which is adapted for many different uses, both in raising and lifting, and in which the slides are alternately moved by the same lever.
Figures 1 and 2 are side elevations of a lifting-jack embodying my invention, taken from opposite sides. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the same.
A represents the standard, which is provided with a suitable base, B, and which has a series of ratchets, 0, formed in one of its edges. Passed down through the top of this standard are two slides, the upper one, D, of which is provided withthe pawl E, and to which the slotted toothed hanger F is rigidly secured. This hanger projects downward any suitable distance, and has the slot I through it made of a length corresponding to the distance the lower slide, J, is to be moved by the operating-lever L. The lower slide, J, is loosely connected to the hanger by means of the bolt N, which passes loosely through the slot. The operating-lever is pivoted upon the lower slide, and is provided with teeth, so as to engage with the teeth of the hanger. The
lower slide is also provided with a pawl, P, for the purpose of supporting the slide in'any position that may be desired.
. When the two slides are at their lowest positions upon the standard and the lever is opouter end raised upward. The pawl of the upper slide then catches in one of the ratchetteeth 0, for the purpose of preventing the upper slide from descending, while the lower slide is moved upward in a similar manner upon the standard. When the downward stroke of thelever ceases, the pawl of the lower slide catches in one of the teeth, so as to hold the slide in position, and then as the outer end of the lever is forced downward the upper slide is again forced upward. The two slides are operated alternately simply by operating the lever like a pump-handle.
By connecting a jack to one of the slides devices of any kind can be raised upward from the ground, and where a pin is passed through a hole in the top of the standard, so as to act as a stop for ablock or other similar device, the jack can be used as a press or as a monkey-wrench.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. In a lifting-jack, the combination of the standard provided with ratchetteeth with two slides, each one of which is provided with a pawl, the slotted toothed hanger, and the operating-lever provided with teeth, substantially as shown.
2. The combination of the standard, the upper slide provided with a pawl, the slotted toothed hanger which is secured rigidly thereon, the lower slide, which is connected to the hanger by means of abolt, and which is provided with a pawl, with the toothed operati ng-lever which is pivoted upon the lower slide, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix m y signature in presence of two witnesses.
EDWARD A. PEASLEY.
