SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 356,443, dated January 25, 1887.

To all whom it may. concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN S. BLACK, of Summer Hill, in the county of Pike and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lifting-Jacks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear,

and exact description of the invention, such as, will enable others skilled in the art to whichtion, No. 206,827, filed July 1, 1886.

The object of the invention is to provide'a cheap, simple, and easily-operated device for lifting wagons or other bodies and holding them in an elevated position; and it consists in the parts and combinations of parts, as will be more fully described, and pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a jack embodying my invention, and Fig. 2 is a view in longitudinal section of same.

K represents a standard provided at its lower end with alongitudinal socket, k, female threaded, or having a threaded block or stationary nut secured within it.

A baseplate, L, is provided with an upwardly-extending standard, Z, threaded and adapted to engage the female thread within the standard and thereby adjust the plate L at any desired distance from the lower end of the standard, and hence determine the height of the standard. The base-plate L is further provided with hooked corners Z, conveniently formed by bending over plate projections, the purpose of which will hereinafter appear.

The upper end of the standard K is bifurcated, and a lever, M, is pivotally secured between its branches.

To the short end of the lever M is secured by a swivel, m, a ring, N, adapted to receive the end of the hub of a wheel. The long arm of the said lever is provided with a series of notches, 0, located on its upper edge between the handle and the standard, and adapted to form seats for the cross-bar p of a loop, P, which loosely embraces the lever. To the lower end of the said loop P is secured a chain, M, or its equivalent, which is adapted to be caught under one of the hooked corners of the base-plate, to hold the lever in the desired adjustment when lifting the wheel. For example, a bit of the chain may be caught under one of the hooked corners of the baseplate and the loop P slipped near the standard to adjust the ring to the hub. The handle of the lever may then be depressed, lifting the wheel, and the loop P may be slid outwardly from the standard into engagement with one of the notches O, and the lever be thereby locked in position while the chock is inserte beneath the wheel.

\Vhile I have described the device as adapted particularly for grasping the hub of a Wheel, I would have it understood that the ring N can be omitted or be removabl y secured to the lever, so that the latter can directly engage the object to be elevated.

It is evident that slight changes might be resorted to in the form and arrangement of the several parts described without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention; hence I do not wish to limit myself to the particular construction herein set forth; but,

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination, with an extensible standard and a lever pivoted thereto, of a ring'secured to the short end of the lever and a chain secured to the standard and provided with a loop adapted to engage notches formed in the long end of the lever, substantially as set forth.

2. The combination, with a standard and a base-plate, the latter having hooked corners, of the lever pivoted to thestandard and a chain loosely secured on the long arm of the lever and adapted to be removably secured to one of the hooked corners of the base-plate.

3. The combination, with a standard and a base-plate adjustably secured thereto and.

provided with hooked corners, of the lever pivoted to the standard and the chain adapted to be removably secured to one of the hooked corners of the base-plate and carrying a loop,

the latter adapted to slide on the long arm of the lever, substantially as set forth.
