U ITE STATES PATENT OF CE.
JAMES A. PARK, OF LANSING, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TL) PUELLA E. PARK, OF SAME PLACE.
HARNESS-SNAP.
-SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 270,105, dated January 2, 1883.
V Application filed May 22, 1882. (N model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES A. PARK, of
Lansing, in the county of Ingham and State clear, and exact description of the invention,
such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to a combined harness snap and buckle, the object being to provide a device of this character whereby astrap may be securely out the use any loops or buckles other than those forming parts of my improvement.
My invention consists in the improved con; slruction and combinations ofparts hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the. drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my combined snap and buckle, showing the buckle opened and ready to receive the strap. Fig. 2 is a similar view, showing the position of the buckle when closed. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional-view of the device as it appears when the strap is secured thereto.
A-represents the hook portion of the snap, which may be coustructed of any of the usual forms. The spring A is secured to the snap, and operates in the ordinary manner. The loop H, at therear end of the snap, differs from the loop of an ordinary snap, in that it .is turned upwardly to serve'as a tuck loop or guide to hold the strap in position between theloop-bar h and the seat 9.
B representsa triangular bail or loop, consisting of the arms B B and cross-bar G. The
ends 0 of said arms embrace the stem D of the snap, and are perforated to receive a pivotal pin, E, passing through the stern and through said perforations of the arms. Theloop B is thus hinged to the snap adjacent to the hook, and the spring A extends between the arms B B as shown. a
The loop B is provided with a lip, F, projecting from the outer side of the bar (J, and provided with a downwardly-projecting pin,
G, adapted to enter a the snap. v a
The manner of using and operating the devices as thus described is as follows: I raise the triangular loop B to about the position hole, g, in the seat 9 of shown in' Fig. l and pass the strap through under the bar 0, so as to bring the hole Kot' the strap over the hole 9 in the seat 9'. 1 then depress the loop, passing the pin Gr through the hole K of the strap and the hole g of the seat. The opposite end of the strap is then turned over the lip F and'under the bar It and drawn up tightly around the bar 0, as shown in Fig. 3.
Ordinarily I make the lip F just long enough to admit of its passing the bark when turned down, so that when a strap is between said lip and the bar h the pin G cannot rise to release the strap; but if the strap is tobe first passed under the end bar, 71, thence over the lip F, and under the, bar 0, until the hole K is over the hole g, the lipmust be shorter by the thickness of the strap 5- otherwise it could not be shut down on account of contact with the strap.
It will be observed that when a strap is secured as illustrated in Fig. 3 the tendency will be, when-draft is applied to the strap, to pull the bar 0 and under surface of the lip F downward on the short end of the s rap, so
that a portion of the strain is taken pin G..
Any suitable metal may be used in the man ufacture of my improvement.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isu 1. In a combiued harness-snap and buckle, the combination, with the snap provided with an end tuck-loop, ot' a triangular clamping bail or loop hinged to the snap and provided with means for engaging a strap, substantially as set forth. v
2. In a combined harness-snap and buckle, the combination, with the snap provided with an upturned eud,tuck-loop, of a triangular clamping bail or loop provided with a project.-
olf the iiii ing lip, and a pin for engaging a strap, sub- In testimony whereof I have signed this 10 stantially as set forth.- specification in the presence of two subscrib- 3. In a combined harness-snap and buckle, ing witnesses, the combination, with the snap provided with a perforated seat for a strap and an upturned end loop, of a triangular loop or bail hinged Vitnesses: to the snap and provided with a projecting P. E. PARK, lip, and a pin adapted to enter the perforation DEAN PARK. of said seat, substantially as set forth.
