DOORKNOB CUSHION Filed Aug 29, 1952 Kenneth Nebe Guy-E. James INVENTORS.
United States Patent DODRKNOB CUSHION Kenneth Nehe and Guy E. James, Tucson, Ariz. Application August 29, 1952, Serial No. 307,080 1 Claim. (Cl. 150-52) This invention relates to new and useful improvements and structural refinements in cushions for door knobs, and the principal object of the invention is to protect furniture, walls, etc., from damage by a projecting knob on an opening door.
The above object is achieved by the provision of a cushion which may be applied to a door knob to act as a resilient bumper, which, unlike the door knob itself, will not injure walls, furniture, etc., with which it may come in contact.
An important feature of the invention resides in the provision of means for quickly and easily adapting the same cushion for use on door knobs of a simple type as well as those equipped with a lock cylinder or push button latch.
Some of the advantages of the invention lie in its simplicity of construction, in its efiicient operation and in its adaptability to economical manufacture.
With the above more important objects and features in view, and such other objects and features as may be come apparent as this specification proceeds, the invention consists essentially of the arrangement and construction ofhpzlrlrts as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in w 1c Figure 1 is an edge view showing a portion of a door with a pair of door knobs, the invention being shown in section as applied to one of the knobs;
li igure 2 is an outside elevational view of the invention; an
Figure 3 is an inside elevational view of the same.
Like characters of reference are employed to designate like parts in the specification and throughout the several views.
Referring now to the accompanying drawings in detail,
e invention consists of a cushion which is designated generally by the reference character and is intended to be applied to a conventional door knob 12 so as to protect walls, furniture, etc., from damage such as would be sustained by contact with the door knob itself.
The cushion l0 embodies in its construction a hollow body 14 which is formed from suitable resilient material such as hard rubber, or the like, and which defines therein a chamber 16 conforming substantially to the size and configuration of the door knob.
The body 14 has a relatively thin inner wall 18 provided with a circular opening 20 constituting an entrance for the chamber 16, and an annular head 22 is provided on the wall 18 at the edge of the opening 20 for reinforcing purposes.
It is to be understood that the body 14 is resiliently yieldable to a sufficient extent to permit expansion of the opening 20 to accommodate the knob 12 While the device is being installed or removed.
The outer Wall 24 of the body 14 is relatively thick and is provided with a central bore 26 in which is disposed a removable closure plug 28.
When the invention is placed in use, the plug 28 is coaxial with the door knob 12 and is left in position if the door knob is of a simple type, as shown in the drawing.
However, if the door knob is provided with either a key cylinder or a push button latch, the plug 28 is removed and discarded so that access to the key cylinder or the push button latch may be had through the medium of the bore 26.
It is believed that the advantages and use of the invention will be readily understood from the foregoing disclosure and therefore, further description thereof at this point is deemed unnecessary.
While in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention it is to be understood that minor changes in the details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be restorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having described the invention, what is: claimed as new 1s:
A door knob cushion comprising a hollow body formed from resilient material and defining a chamber conforming substantially to the size and configuration of a door knob, said body having a relatively thin inner wall provided with an entrance opening for said chamber and a relatively thick outer wall constituting a bumper, said outer wall being provided with a central bore communicatingdvigth said chamber, and a knockout plug positioned in sai ore.
