Description
Patented Nov. 30, 1948 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE John R. Wylie, San Francisco, Calif.
Application October 7, 1944, Serial No. 557,682
2 Claims. (Cl; 292346) The present invention relates to improvements in a door lock protector, and it consists of the combinations, constructions and arrangements hereinafter described and claimed.
In the ordinary door lock, the bolt has an inclined portion for easing the bolt to retract automatically when the door is closed. There is usually a slight space between the door and the door-frame and it is frequently possible to insert a thin flexible member, such as a piece of Celluloid, between the door and the door frame from the outside of the door for forcibly retracting the bolt and permitting the door to be opened without using a key. The principal object of my invention is to provide a protector which cooperates with the door stop for preventing the insertion of a thin flexible member between the door and the door frame for retracting the door lock bolt.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the type described which is extremely simple in construction and which may be manufactured at slight expense.
Other objects and advantages will appear in the following specification, and the novel features of the device will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application, in which:
Figure 1 is a horizontal section through a door and door-frame showing my device operatively applied thereto;
Figure 2 is an isometric view of a door and a door-stop showing my device operatively applied thereto; and
Figure 3 is an isometric view of the outside portion of a door showing my device applied in place.
While I have shown only the preferred form of my invention, it should be understood that various changes or modifications may be made within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
In carrying out my invention I make use of a door indicated generally at A having a doorlock B and a retractable bolt C. I also make use of a door-frame D and the frame has a door stop E. The parts thus far described are standard in construction and form no part of my invention except insofar that they cooperate with the device now to be described.
The door lock protector F comprises a fiat piece of metal I of the desired thickness and having a cut-away portion 2 for straddling the end 3 of the lock B. Figure 3 shows the recess 2 just large enough to receive the end 3 of the look. In actual practice the opening 2 will be long enough to receive any standard size door lock end. There might be for example, a space between the sides 2a of the recess and the end plate.
In order to form the recess 2, the protector plate F is out along the lines 2a for a predetermined distance. A portion of the metal lying between the two outs is bent at right angles to the plane of the protector F and forms a protecting lip l. Figure 3 shows how the wings 5 of the protector F are received in recesses 6 formed in the end I of the door and further shows how the lip 4 contacts with the outer face 8 of the door. If desired, the lip 4 may be embedded in a recess formed in the face 8 of the door.
The protector F has a guard 9 that projects beyond the outer face or surface 8 of the door and this guard is designed to enter a slot Ill formed on the inner surface of the door stop E. When the door is closed, the guard 9 enters the slot I0 while the lip 4 either lies against the outer face 8 of the door or may be embedded in the face of the door. Figure 1 shows the door frame D provided with the usual bolt receiving recess II and the striker plate l2.
From the foregoing description of the various parts of the device, the operation thereof may be readily understood.
The device may be applied to the door with but slight alterations being necessary. The wings 5 may be embedded in recesses 6 provided in the door. Screws l3 secure the protector to the door. The door-stop E has a slot l0 long enough and wide enough to receive the guard 9. Figures 2 and 3 show the guard as being provided with rounded corners 90, so that the device will not catch on anything. The door is opened and closed in the usual manner by actuating either of the door-knobs l4. When the door is closed the guard 9 will enter the slot [0 in the door stop E. It will be seen from Figure 1 that the protector shields the bolt 0 against the entrance of any thin flexible member between the door and the door frame from the outside of the door for retracting the bolt. It is impossible for the thin flexible member to be forced between the lip 4 and the stop E and then be moved into the slot I0 and around the guard 9 and then pass between the door and the door-frame to retract the bolt C. This simple arrangement will prevent the door lock bolt from being retracted by unauthorized persons.
It is possible for the door-lock B to have its end plate 3 extend across the edge 1 of the door tion to cause the end of a door lock to be received;
in the recess and the body to projectubeyond the outer door surface, the body being adapted to be received in a recess of a door stopiwhensthesdocr is closed.
2.-An article of manufacture comprising a single sheet of metal forming a body, as'aid body having a recess with wings forming the sides of the!rrecess; said rwingsslying. the .plane -of the 20 hodylandtin thevplaneroftherecess, the wings being securable to the end of a door in a position to cause the end of a door lock to be received in the recess and the body to project beyond the outer door surface, the body being adapted to be received in a recess of a door stop when the door is closed, the body having an integral lip extending at right angles thereto and being coextensive with the length of the recess lying between the wingsyrthe lip'being adapted to contactwith the outer doorisu'rface.
