(Cl. 214303) My invention has for its object an arrangement wherein a bin filled with refuse or garbage and provided with a hinged lid is coupled by means of a coupling catch submitted to spring pressure with a tipping frame, said tipping frame being simultaneously released while the bin lid engages the controlled cover of the opening in the tipping frame that serves for the transfer of the refuse, said engagement being provided through a projection on the lid so that said lid may open and close during the emptying procedure through the movement of the tipping frame cover.
Arrangements are already known wherein a bin is provided with a hinged lid while the hinge elements extend more or less beyond the flange surrounding the opening of the bin whereby the opening of the tipping frame and the packing ring for said opening should be provided with a more or less considerable notch in order to allow an opening of the bin lid through the controlled closing cover of the tipping frame. Further, the bin is coupled in these prior arrangements through the agency of the bin hinge so that the pivotal axis of said hinge lies outside the tipping frame and consequently the hinge elements of the bin lid should also project beyond the tipping frame, which still further increases the notch required in the latter. The drawback of such prior arrangements consists in that, at the moment of the tipping of the frame carrying the full bin coupled to it through its hinge, the mass of air that is thus displaced finds its exit through said notch and thereby the dust-carrying air is allowed to pass freely outside the transfer means into the atmosphere. Further, this notch provides a gap at the periphery of the ring or flange mounted round the edge of the filling opening of the tipping frame for reinforcing, guiding and sealing purposes.
In these prior arrangements, there are provided control means for the cover operating automatically through the tipping of the frame in both directions. But these show the drawback consisting in that, when refuse reaches the seat of the closing cover on the tipping frame, sa1d control means do not allow said frame to return into its starting position. Other control means have been provided for such covers, wherein the shifting of the cover is performed automatically only in the direction corresponding to the emptying of the bins while said control means provide, during the return movement of the tipping frame for a larger possibility of an undefined opening. This latter control system allows, it is true, the tipping frame to return in all cases into its final position in which only a disengagement of the dust bin and a re-locking of the tipping frame is possible; but it also shows the drawback consisting in that in the case of any too large ob ects held fast between the seat of the cover and the cover itself, said cover will come with the lid of the dust bin that is coupled therewith into a position such that the dust bin is actually disengaged while, however, the lid remains still open to such an extent that it cannot be released any longer through the opening in the tipping frame. In such cases, it is true that no breaking occurs in the coupling members but generally the bin cover is so severely damaged that it is necessary to replace it.
Now, according to my invention, completely removed.
The opening of the bin adapted to receive the refuse is provided with a lid ensuring perfect fluidtightness and the hinge of which is arranged sufliciently on the inside of the bin for it to completely clear the entire periphery of the edge of the flange surrounding the opening of the said drawbacks are 2,696,315 Patented Dec. 7, 1954 bin. Similarly, said arrangement of the hinge on the bin allows providing for a reinforcing guiding and sealing ring surrounding the opening of the tipping frame without any gap in its periphery for housing the hinge, whereby the flange surrounding the opening in the bin and the sealing ring for the opening in the tipping flange may engage one another throughout their periphery and a perfectly dusttight closure is obtained between the filling opening in the frame and the dust bin during the emptying operation.
A further advantage of said arrangement consists in that instead of the hinge on the bin, the flange surrounding the opening in the latter serves for raising directly the coupling catch against the action of its spring together with the locking lever carried by the same shaft. This allows on one hand coupling the flange on the bin with the tipping frame and, on the other hand, the unlocking of the latter when the bin is tipped further, while simultaneously the controlled closing cover for the filling opening in the tipping frame acts through a cut out part provided in it and the projection on the bin lid engaging said part so as to open said lid to an extent such that the solid refuse may fall directly out of the dust bin into the collecting receiver through the tipping frame.
In the same arrangement, it is necessary also to design the control means for the closing cover in a manner such that the tipping frame carrying the latter may return in all cases into its starting position in order to disengage the bin and to allow a relocking of the tipping frame without any damage to the coupling members and to the bin lid being possible.
In the arrangement according to my invention, it is of advantage to control automatically the cover for the tipping frame during the emptying operation While during the return movement of the tipping frame, the closing cover is controlled only semi-automatically; in other words, the cover allows, when refuse engages the space between it and the tipping frame, said tipping frame to return into its final inoperative position, whereby the disengagement of the dust bin is possible, while it leaves only a limited opening possibility in the emptying direction so that the closing cover and the bin lid coupled therewith are closed to such an extent and are brought into such a position that the bin lid is also released with reference to the cover and may be removed through the filling gate constituted by the opening in the tipping frame.
I have illustrated by way of example in accompanying drawings a preferred embodiment of my arrangement. In said drawings:

In the drawings, 1 designates the dust bin with the flange 2 surrounding its opening and with a hinge part 3. The bin lid 4 is pivotally secured to the actual bin through the coperating hinge part 5 connected with said hinge part 3 through the hinge pin 6. The bin is provided with a projection 7 for engaging it on the actual emptying device while the bin lid carries a projection 8 for operating it as disclosed hereinafter. v
Inside the hood or casing 9 is arranged the tipping frame 10 in which the opening 11 is provided with a sealing ring 12 surrounding it, said frame being closed through the controlled door or cover 13 provided with an aperture 14, cut through its surface, as apparent from Fig. 2. A common rotary shaft 15 carries the coupling catch 16 and the locking lever 17 that are rigidly secured to said shaft, the lever 17 cooperating with the correspondingly shaped abutment 18 rigid with the hood 9. A spring 19 urges constantly the shaft into a predetermined angular movement. Hooks 20 for engagement with the cooperating projection 7 on the bin are provided frame.
The operation of my improved arrangement is as fol-lows:
A dust bin 1 that is full of garbage is hung in the usual manner through the projection 7 to the hooks 20 provided on the tipping frame 10 and is caused to rock. in the emptying direction. This causes the flange 2 surrounding the opening of the dust bin to raise the coupling catch 16 against the pressure of the spring 19 surrounding the shaft 1'5; said flange passes beyond the catch and under same so as to engage it and to lie in contact throughout its periphery with the sealing ring 12 surrounding without any gap the opening 11 in the tipping frame 10. The raising of the coupling catch provides a raising of the locking lever 17 for the tipping frame that is rigid with the same shaft as the catch; the tipping frame, thus released, may rock further into the garbage transfer hood 9. The cover or door 13 surrounding the transfer opening in the tipping frame, that is hung to the inside of said tipping frame at 28 through a hinge, is controlled automatically during the displacement of the tipping frame in the bin-emptying direction through the arm 24 rigid therewith and the control rods 22 and 26, while the movement of the cover is controlled only to a limited extent in the opposite direction by reason of the sliding movement allowed for the stop 27 in the slot 23, so that said cover opens the bin lid 4 through the projection 8 on the said lid 4 engaging the out portion 14 to an extent such that the solid residue may fall directly out of the bin.
When the bin is to be removed, the flange surrounding its opening draws along with it the rocking frame that is coupled with it, back up to the point where the locking lever 17 meets the cooperating abutment l3 rigid with the hood or casing 9; this provides for a pivoting movement of said lever that releases on one hand the coupling catch with reference to the bin flange and, on the other hand, allows the return into their starting positions of the coupling catch and locking lever rigid with the same shaft 15 under the action of the spring 19 acting on the latter, whereby the limited movement of the cover releases also at the same time the lid of the bin and is ready to receive a further dust bin for a further emptying operation.
What I claim is:
1. In a device for collecting refuse including a receptacle for refuse, in combination, a dust bin having an opening and including a transverse flange surrounding said opening, a lid adapted to close said opening and having its perimeter located inside the outer perimeter of said flange spaced therefrom, and hinge means tiltably securing said lid to said flange and being located inside said outer perimeter of said flange spaced therefrom so as to leave a marginal area of said flange therefrom to said outer perimeter thereof unobstructed and constituting a continuous annular sealing face; and a frame secured to the receptacle and formed with an opening, said frame having a continuous rim portion provided with a sealing face and surrounding said opening, the sealing face on said flange on said dust bin adapted to fluid-tightly engage said sealing face on said frame while said dust bin is in a position in which said opening therein is downwardly tilted to permit the contents of said dust bin to drop through said opening in said frame into the receptacle when said lid opens.
2. in a device for collecting refuse including a receptacle for refuse, in combination, a dust bin having an opening on top and including a transverse flange surrounding said opening, a lid adapted to close said opening and having its perimeter located inside the outer perimeter of said flange spaced therefrom, hinge means tiltably securing said lid to said flange and being located inside said outer perimeter of said flange spaced therefrom so as to leave a marginal area of said flange adjacent to said outer perimeter thereof unobstructed and constituting a sealing face, and pivot means secured to the lower portion of said dust bin; a tipping frame tiltably secured to the receptacle movably between an inoperative position and a tilted operative position and formed with an opening, said tipping frame having a continuous rim portion provided with a sealing face and surrounding said opening, the sealing face on said flange on said dust bin adapted to fluid-tightly engage said sealing face on said tipping frame in operative position thereof; hook means secured to the lower portion of said tipping frame and adapted to engage said pivot means on said dust bin; catch means pivotally secured to the upper portion of said tilting frame and adapted to engage said flange of said dust bin when said sealing faces are engaging each other in operative position and said dust bin is tilted together with said tipping frame toward said receptacle; a releasing abutment secured to said receptacle adapted to disengage said catch means during the return movement of said dust bin; a closing cover tiltably mounted on said tipping frame for covering said opening therein; and means on said closing cover engaging said lid of said dust bin when said sealing faces are engaging each other in operative position.
3. In a device for collecting refuse including a receptacle for refuse, in combination, a dust bin having an opening on top and including a transverse flange surrounding said opening, a lid adapted to close said opening and having its perimeter located inside the outer perimeter of said flange spaced therefrom, hinge means t-iltably securing said lid to said flange and being located inside said outer perimeter of said flange spaced there from so as to leave a marginal area of said flnge adjacent to said outer perimeter thereof unobstructed and constituting a sealing face, and pivot means secured to t the lower portion of said dust bin; hood means secured to said receptacle; a tipping frame tiltably secured to said hood means movably between an inoperative position and a tilted operative position and formed with an Opening, said tipping frame having a continuous rim portion provided with a sealing face and surrounding said opening, the sealing face on said flange on said dust bin adapted to fluid-tightly engage said sealing face on said tipping frame in operative position thereof; hook means secured to the lower portion of said tipping frame and adapted to engage said pivot means on said dust bin; means for connecting said dust bin with said tipping frame during tilting; a closing cover tiltably mounted on said tipping frame for covering said opening therein; means on said closing cover engaging said lid of said dust bin when said sealing faces are engaging each other in operative position; and cover control means connecting said closing cover with said hood means for forcing said closing cover and thereby said lid to open when said tipping frame is tilted towards said receptacle by a manually tilted dust bin engaging with its sealing face said sealing face of said tipping frame in operative position, said cover control means only partly closing said closing cover and thereby said lid during the return movement of said dust bin and said tipping frame, said partly closed lid being adapted to pass through said opening in said tipping frame so as to permit removal of said dust bin in said inoperative position of said tipping frame.

In a device for collecting refuse including a receptacle for refuse, in combination, a dust bin having an opening on top and including a transverse flange surrounding said opening, a lid adapted to close said opening and having its perimeter located inside the outer perimeter of said flange spaced therefrom, hinge means tiltably securing said lid to said flange and being located inside said outer perimeter of said flange spaced there from so as to leave a marginal area of said flange adjacent to said outer perimeter thereof unobstructed and constituting a sealing face, and pivot means secured to the lower portion of said dust bin; a tipping frame tiltably secured to the receptacle movably between an inoperative position and a tilted operative position and formed with an opening, said tipping frame ha ing a continuous rim portion provided wiht a sealing face and surrounding said opening, the sealing face on said flange on said dust bin adapted to fluid-tightly engage said sealing face on said tipping frame in operative position thereof; hook means secured to the lower portion of said tipping frame and adapted to engage said pivot means on said dust bin; a shaft rotatably mounted in the upper portion of said tipping frame parallel to the pivotal of the same outwardly spaced for a short distance from said rim of said tipping frame; catch means fixedly secured to said shaft and adapted to be lifted by said flange of said dust bin and then to engage said flange of said dust bin when said sealing faces are engaging each other in operative position and said dust bin is tilted together with said tipping frame toward said receptacle; a locking lever fixedlysecured to said shaft locking said tipping frame in inoperative position thereof and moving with sai shaf o a to b disen aged h d catch m n is lifted; spring means urging said shaft to turn in one direction so as to cause engagement of said catch means and of said locking means; a releasing abutment secured to said rece tacle and adapted to disengage said catch means during the return movement of said dust bin by turning said locking lever and said shaft against the action of said spring means; a closing cover tiltably mounted on said tipping frame for covering said opening therein; means on said closing cover engaging said lid of said dust bin when said sealing faces are engaging each other in operative position; and cover control means connecting said closing cover with the receptacle for forcing said closing cover and thereby said lid to open when said tipping frame is tilted towards said receptacle by a manually tilted dust bin engaging with its sealing face said sealing face of said tipping frame in operative position, said cover control means only partly closing said closing cover and thereby said lid during the return movement of said dust bin and said tipping frame, said partly closed lid being adapted to pass through said opening in said tipping frame so as to permit removal of said dust bin in said inoperative position of said tipping frame.

In a device for collecting refuse including a receptacle for refuse, in combination, a dust bin having an opening on top and including a transverse flange surrounding said opening, a lid adapted to close said opening and having its perimeter located inside the outer perimeter of said flange spaced therefrom, hinge means tiltably securing said lid to said flange and being located inside said outer perimeter of said flange spaced there-- from so as to leave a marginal area of said flange adjacent to said outer perimeter thereof unobstructed and constituting a sealing face, and pivot means secured to the lower portion of said dust bin; hood means secured to said receptacle; a tipping frame tiltably secured to said hood means movably between an inoperative position and a tilted operative position and formed with an opening, said tipping frame having a continuous rim portion provided with a sealing face and surrounding said opening, the sealing face on said flange on said dust bin adapted to fluid-tightly engage said sealing face on said tipping frame in operative position thereof; hook means secured to the lower portion of said tipping frame and adapted to engage said pivot means on said dust bin; a shaft rotatably mounted in the upper portion of said tipping frame parallel to the pivotal axis of the same outwardly spaced for a short distance from said rim of said tipping frame; catch means fixedly secured to said shaft and adapted to be lifted by said flange of said dust bin and then to engage said flange of said dust bin when said sealing faces are engaging each other in operative position and said dust bin is tilted together with said tipping frame toward said receptacle; a locking lever fixedly secured to said shaft locking said tipping frame in inoperative position thereof and moving with said shaft so as to be disengaged when said catch means is lifted; spring means urging said shaft to turn in one direction so as to cause engagement of said catch means and of said locking means; a releasing abutment secured to said hood means and adapted to disengage said catch means during the return movement of said dust bin by turning said locking lever and said shaft against the action of said spring means; a closing cover tiltably mounted on said tipping frame for covering said opening therein; means on said closing cover engaging said lid of said dust bin when said sealing faces are engaging each other in operative position; and control rod means including a first member pivotally secured to said hood, a second member pivotally secured to said closing cover, and stop means terminating relative movement of said first and second members in a first end position in which said control rod means is shorter, and a second end position in which said control rod means is longer, said control rod means in said first end position forcing said closing cover to open when said tipping frame is tilted towards said receptacle by a manually tilted dust bin engaging with its sealing face, said control means, permitting said closing cover to remain partly open when obstructed during the return movement of said tipping frame by moving from said first end position to said second end position, and in said second position partly closing said cover and thereby said lid during further return movement, said partly closed lid being adapted to pass through said opening in said tipping frame permitting removal of said dust bin.
