This invention relates to knife sharpeners and more particularly to a device adapted to be mounted in xed position on a suitable support and to sharpen a knife when the knife blade is pulled through the device.
It is among the objects of the invention to provide an improved knife sharpener including a frame or base structure and mutually opposed file elements removably mounted in the frame and divergently disposed relative to each other; in which the frame structure is adjustable to vary the angle between the opposed file elements; in which the teeth of the file elements intermesh at corresponding edges of the elements; in which the le elements may be sections of commercial les, such as are used in automobile body repair work, and are reversible in the holding frame so that the teeth on both sides of the elements can be utilized; and which is simple and durable in construction, economical to manufacture, and effective and e'icient in use.
Other objects and advantages will become apparent from a consideration of the following description and the appended claims in conjunction with the accompanying drawing wherein:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a knife Sharpener illustrative of the invention;
Figure 2 is a side elevational View of the knife Sharpener illustrated in Figure 1;
Figure 3 is an end elevational view of the knife sharpener looking at the left hand end ras illustrated in Figures 1 and 2;
Figure 4 is a cross sectional View on the line 4 4 of Figure 1; and
Figure 5 is a perspective view of a file element constituting an operative component of the device.
With continued reference to the drawing, the knife sharpening device comprises a frame, generally indicated at I 0, including an outer carrier II and an inner carrier I2. The outer carrier includes a channel shaped base I3 and a channel shaped standard I4 upstanding perpendicularly from one end of the base I3 with its open side adjacent the base. The base I3 is provided medially of the Width of the web thereof and near the end of the web remote from the standard I4 with an aperture I5 for receiving a hold down screw and an apertured lug I6 projects from the end of the base from which the standard I4 extends medially of the width of this end of the base to receive a second hold down screw for properly mounting the device on a fixed support.
The inner carrier I2 includes channel shaped legs I8 and I9 joined together at corresponding ends and disposed at an acute angle to each other. The carrier I2 is received in the base I3 of the outer carrier II between the side flanges 20 and 2l of the base I3 and pivot pins 22 and 23 extend through apertures in the flanges 2D and 2I near the standard |14 and are connected to the inner carrier I2 near the juncture of the legs I8 and I9 of the inner carrier to pivotally connect the inner carrier to the outer carrier for rocking movements of the inner carrier about an axis extending transversely of the outer and inner carriers.
The standard I4 of the outer carrier and the leg I9 of the inner carrier are disposed in mutually opposed relationship and diverging relative to each other from the axis of the pivotal connection between the carriers with the open side of the standard facing the leg I9 of the inner carrier and the open side of the leg I9 facing the standard I4.
The web of the inner carrier is provided medially of the width thereof and near the end thereof remote from the leg I9 with a tapped apertured boss 24 and an adjusting screw 25 is threaded through this boss and bears at one end against the web of the outer carrier base I3 to adjust the angle between the standard I4 and the upstanding leg I9 of the inner carrier I2.
The flanges of the channel shaped standard I4 of the outer carrier are inwardly directed along their outer edges, as indicated at 26 and 21, to provide inwardly opening and mutually opposed grooves extending one along each side of the standard and the flanges of the inner carrier leg I9 are similarly inwardly directed along their outer edges, as indicated at 28 and 29, to provide inwardly opening and mutually opposed grooves extending one along each side of the carrier leg I9.
A file element 30 is mounted in the standard I4 and a similar file element 3| is mounted in the leg I9 of the inner carrier I2.` These le elements may be specially provided or may be provided by cutting sections of suitable lengths from commercially available files, such as the files ordinarily used in automobile body repair work, and have their ends tapered or bevelled to t into the V-shaped grooves extending along the opposite ends of the standard I4 and the leg I9. The inner carrier I2 is so positioned relative to the outer carrier II that the teeth on the side of the file element 3I adjacent the le element 30 vintermesh at the edge of the file element 3| adjacent the base web of the outer carrier with the adjacent teeth of the element 30 near the edge of the element 30 adjacent the base web of the outer carrier to provide between the adjacent faces of the file elements 30 and 3l a V-shaped groove completely closed at its bottom end.
The flanges 20 and 2l of the base portion of the outer carrier are provided with notches 32 and 33 respectively at the inner side of the standard I4 which notches are V-shaped and extend somewhat below the V-shaped groove between the adjacent faces of the file elements so that a knife blade can be placed between the le elements with its cutting edge at the bottom of the groove between these elements and drawn longitudinally through the device. As the knife blade is drawn past the file elements, the mutually opposed teeth of the le elements scrape the blade along the cutting edge thereof and sharpen the cutting edge of the knife blade.
The frame I is a thin walled structure and can be formed of any suitable material, such as sheet metal or a readily moldable synthetic resin plastic and produces a device which is neat and attractive in appearance to have good sales appeal, as well as one which is durable and highly effective in use.
In making the `file elements removable from the frame, new le elements may be easily substituted for the original Without discarding the frame.
The invention may be embodied in other specic forms without departing from the spirit or essential characteristics thereof. The present embodiment is, therefore, to be considered in all respects as illustrative and not restrictive, the scope of the invention being indicated by the appended claims rather than by the foregoing description, and all changes which come within the meaning and range of equivalency of the claims are, therefore, intended to be embraced therein.
What is claimed is:
l. A knife Sharpener comprising a frame including a first carrier having a channel shaped base and a channel shaped standard extending perpendicularly from said base at one end of the latter, a second carrier having channel shaped legs disposed at an acute angle to each other with one leg disposed in said base and the other leg divergently opposed to said standard and having its open side facing the open side of said standard, means pivotally connecting said second carrier at the juncture of the legs thereof to the base of said first carrier adjacent said standard for rocking movement of said second carrier relative to sai-d first carrier about an axis disposed transversely of said carriers, an adjusting screw threaded through said one leg of said second carrier 4and bearing against the base of said rst carrier for adjusting the angle between the other leg of said second carrier and the standard of said first carrier, and le elements removably disposed one in said standard and one in said other leg of the second carrier in divergent relationship to each other with their opposed teeth intermeshing at the edges thereof adjacent said base.
2. A knife Sharpener comprising an outer carrier including a base and a channel shaped standard extending perpendicularly from one end of said base, an inner carrier having a first leg disposed adjacent the base of said outer carrier and a second leg of channel shape extending from one end of said first leg at an acute angle thereto and opposed to said standard in divergent relationship thereto, means pivotally connecting said inner carrier at the juncture of the legs thereof to said outer carrier adjacent the juncture of the base and standard thereof for movement of said inner carrier relative to said outer carrier, means carried by said first leg of said inner carrier and engaging the base of said outer carrier to adjustably vary the angle between said second leg and said standard, and le elements carried one by said second leg and one by said standard in mutually opposed and divergent relationship to each other.

A knife Sharpener comprising an outer carrier including a base and a channel shaped standard extending from one end of said base at an angle thereto, an inner carrier having a rst leg disposed adjacent the base of said outer carrier and a second leg of channel shape extending from one end of said first leg at an angle thereto and opposed to said standard in divergent relationship thereto, means pivotally connecting said inner carrier at the juncture of the legs thereof to said outer carrier adjacent the juncture of the base and standard thereof, means carried by one of said carriers and engaging the other of said carriers to adjustably vary the angle between said second leg and said standard, and file elements carried one by said second leg and one by said standard in mutually opposed and divergent relationship to each other, said second leg and said standard each having formations providing inwardly opening grooves extending one along each side edge of said second leg and said standard, and said file elements having beveled ends sldably received in the corre sponding grooves, and being invertible and reversible relative to said standard and said second leg to successively bring all portions of the teeth of said file elements to knife sharpening position in said knife Sharpener.
