PACKING-BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 269,059, dated becembe'r 12, 188
' Application filed September 29, 1882. (No model.)
sists in the combination of an openended tubular cover or sheath with a sliding tray having its bottom provided. near one end with a lifting-flap, formed by means of a slit within or intermediate of the edges of the bottom, leaving such edges entirely attached to the sides and ends of the tray, all of which will be set forth more fully hereinafter.
The invention also consists in combining with an open-ended tubular cover a tray having an opening in its bottom and a lifting-flap, with a connection between the flap and cover, so that the flap will automatically rise when the cover is removed.
In the accompanyingdrawings, Figure lrepresents a longitudinal vertical section of my package constructed with a tubular coverwhen the same is closed. Fig.2 is a similar section of the same when the box is open.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
In the drawings, the letter A designates the body or tray of my box, which by preference ismade rectangular, and which is fitted into an open-ended tubular cover, B, in which it slides, so that the boxis closed when the tray is pushed into the tubular cover, and by pushing or pulling the tray out of its cover the contents thereot can be reached. On one end of the bottom of'the tray is formed a lip, a, by means of which said tray can be drawn out of its cover. This lip is made integral with the bottom of the tray. in practice this lip is made out of one piece with the bottom, and it is cut out of that portion of the tray which forms one of its ends 0, so that no extra stock is required in the manufacture of the box. The hole 1), Figs. 1 and 2, which is formed in the end of the tray by cutting out the lip, is covered up by the paper or other material used forcovering the tray. Boxes of this class are used in large quantities as packages for cigarettes, crayons, sticks of candy, and other articles; and if the box is filled or the tray is only partially drawn out of its cover it is difficult to remove one of the cigarettes without injuring the same in some part. This difficulty I have overcome by providing the bottom of the tray with a hole, d, near the end 0 out of which the lip a has been out.
Ifthe tray is partially drawn out of its tubular cover, the cigarettes or other articles contained therein can be raised up, as shown in Fig. 2, by pressing with the finger from beneath against the flap c, which will raise the cigarettes, and thus each of them can easily be taken out of the box without danger of injur ing the same. The lilting-flap 0 can be connected by cords or threads f with the tubular cover, so that when the tray is drawn out said iiap is raised automatically.
It will be readily seen that my box can be used with advantage for other articles besides cigarettes, such as crayons, carbon sticks, sticks of candy, or other articles of a similar nature.
