When constructed and arranged substantially in accordance with the foregoing description', my improved hinge and fastening admirably answers the uses and purposes for which it is intended, as previously indicated. The cover o r lid may be opened from either side, or entirely removed from the trunk, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 2, and as, when thrown back. plate C iinds a support u pon hasp E, the use ot' straps upon the interior of the trunk for holding the cover in an elevated position may be dispensed with. When it is desired to open the trunk upon either side the key is turned in lock I, bar Gr is drawn back, disengaging hasps E, and by dropping said hasps, as shown at the right of Fig. 1, the cover may be lifted up, the fastenings upon the opposite side acting as hinges.

Having now fully described my invention, 'what I claim as new therein, and desire to se cure by Letters Patent, is- Y l. A trunk or chest hinge ot' thecharaeter herein set forth, composed essentially of the two plates for attachment to the body and cover, and the hinged hasp mounted upon one of said plates and interlocking with the other plate, the same being arranged to operate substamially as and for the purposes set forth, whereby the raising of the cover orlid is permitted from either side, and also the removal ofthe cover or lid, substantially as shown and described.

2. Ina separable hinge or fastening of the character herein specified, plate C, perforated at C and having ears G2, substantially as shown and described.

3. In a separable hinge or fastening of the character herein specified, the combination, with plate C, perforated at G and having ears G2, of plate D and hasp E, substantially as shown and described.

ZLfIn a separable hinge or fastening of the character herein specified. plate D, having perforation D', depression D2, projections d, bent portion D3, and groove d', substantially as shown and described.

5. In a separable hinge or fastening of the character herein specified, the combination, with plate D, having perforation D and groove d', of hasp E and spring a, substantially as shown and described.

6. In a separable hinge or fastening, hasp E, having bar E', hooks E2, and tongue F, substantially as shown and described.

7. In a separable hinge or fastening, the combination, with plates G and D and spring a, of huspE, having tongue F, with groove d', substantially as shown and described.

8. The combination, with plates C and D and hasp E, ot' a sliding bar. G, and lock I, substantially as shown and described.
