Description

Aug. 24, 1954 A. COOPER RECEPTACLE COVER SECURING DEVICE Filed June 18, 1951 ATTORNEY9 Patented Aug. 24. 1954 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE RECEPTACLE COVER SECURING DEVICE Adrian L. Cooper, Dayton, Ohio Application June 18, 1951, Serial No. 232,113
1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to a receptacle cover securing device, and more particularly to such a device adapted for use with trash or garbage cans.
A primary object of the invention is to provide a receptacle cover securing means whereby the cover may be held in operative or inoperative position, so that the cover may not be lost, and further, so that the cover may not be displaced when in operative position.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a receptacle cover securing means which may be readily applied to the receptacle and cover without the use of tools.
Still another object of the invention is the provision of such a device provided with means for connecting the cover handle and the receptacle handles which provides a substitute handle for the receptacle, so that the latter may be carried with the cover securing means in operative position.
Still other objects will in part be obvious and will in part be pointed out as the description of the invention proceeds and shown in the accompanying drawing, wherein there is disclosed a preferred embodiment of this inventive concept.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a fragmentary side elevational view of a receptacle and cover showing the receptacle cover securing means of the instant invention in applied position;
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of one of the receptacle cover securing means shown in Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is an end elevational view of a portion of the device disclosed in Fig. 2; and
Fig. 4 is a plan view of the blank from which a portion of the device disclosed in Figs. 1 to 3 is formed.
' Similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views of the drawn Referring now to the drawing in detail, there is generally indicated at H] a receptacle such as a garbage or trash can, provided with a conventional cover or lid I I having a centrally positioned handle l2. The receptacle II] is provided on its opposite sides with a pair of handles I3,
hingedly secured as by hinges M to an intermediate point on the side of the receptacle.
The device of the instant invention is adapted to provide a means for securing the cover or lid II on the receptacle l and includes a means generally indicated at [5 for engaging the handle 12, this means including a wire coil comprised of a double loop I6 and I! connected by a link I8, the'loop It being adapted to engage about one of the side members of the handle l2. The other loop I! has secured thereto one end .19 of a coil spring 20, the opposite end of which is engaged in an aperture 21 in a plate generally indicated at 22 formed from the blank of Fig. 4.
The plate 22 has the central portion, as indicated at 23, cut out, and the cutout tongue 23 is looped inwardly, as best shown in Fig. 1, to engage in'the bight of handles I3. The outer portion of the plate 22, indicated at 24, is curled outwardly and reverted to form a finger gripping portion to serve as an auxiliary handle in lieu of the handles l3.
From the foregoing, the operation of the device should now be readily understandable. Loops [6 are first secured about the handle I2 and the springs 20 stretched or extended until the reverted portions 23 of plates 22 may be secured in the bights of handles IS. The springs 26 are thus placed under tension, and serve securely to hold the cover I l in position upon the receptacle In. If it is desired to move the receptacle I0, the hook-shaped or reverted portions 24 may be utilized as auxiliary handles in lieu of the handles l3, and the device may be readily lifted thereby.
As various embodiments may be made of this inventive concept, and as various modifications may be made in the embodiment hereinbefore shown and described, it is to be understood that all matter herein is to be interpreted merely as illustrative and not in a limiting sense. I
I claim:
A cover holding means for a receptacle having a pair of handles and a cover provided with a handle in the center of the top thereof, said cover holding means comprising a pair of springs, securing means for each spring, each securing means comprising an elongated wire formed with a single loop at each end, said loops being on opposite sides thereof, each wire having one loop secured to one end of each spring and the other end secured to the cover handle, means at the other end of each spring comprising a plate having a central cutout reverted portion for securing the other end of each spring to a receptacle handle, and means comprising the portion of said plate from which the cutout is stamped reverted oppositely to said cutout portion to form an auxiliary handle for said receptacle in offset rela- References Cited in the file of this patent UNITED STATES PATENTS Number Name Date 1,020,916 Lanier Mar. 19, 1912 1,206,074 Zwiener Nov. 28, 1916 Number Number Name Date Wallace June 6, 1922 Chilson Feb. 1, 1927 Umberger Feb. 26, 1929 Thompson May 23, 1933 FOREIGN PATENTS Country Date Switzerland Nov. 16, 1922 Germany Feb. 18, 1921 Switzerland Nov, 12, 1932
