UNITED STATES OF ONE-HALF TO WILLIAM GULAGER, OF SAME PLACE.
COLLAR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 267,494, dated November '14, 1882.
Application filed August 7, 1882. (No model.) I
To all whom 1' it may concern Be it known that I, VVAL'IER Onnrsrornnn, a citizen of the UnitedStates, and a resident of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented an Improvement in Shirt-Collar Retainers, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to overcome the annoyance caused by the rising of the band of a shirt-collar above the neckband of the shirt, and this object I attain in the manner which I will now proceed to describe, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a view of the neck of a. shirt with collar, one end of the latter being left unfastened to illustrate my invention; and Fig. 2, a view of a collar made according to my invention.
Ordinaryshirt-collars,especiallywhen rather tight-fitting, have a tendency to rise in front under the influence of various movements of the body until the band of the collar is above the neckband of the shirta position which is both uncomfortable and embarrassing to the wearer. V
In carrying out my invention with the view of overcoming this objection I form on the lower edge of the collar-bandit, at a point adjacent to each of the front endsof the collar, a tab, 1), and on the neckband d of the shirt I form tabs 6, in such positions that they will coincide with thetabs b of the collar when the latter is applied to the shirt. Before. the collar is applied the tabs 0 are turned up against the inside of said collar and the tabs 6 are turned down against the neckband cl of the shirt, and before buttoning the collar to the front button,f, the tabs 1) are slipped under the tabs c, this engagement of the two sets of tabs preventing the objectionable rising of the collar above alluded to.
I have shown my invention as applied to a standing collar but it may be applied to turndown collars as well, and in some cases the band of the collar may have slits for the reception of the tabs e on the neckband of the shirt instead of being provided with tabs bfor engagement with said tabs 0. The construction shown is preferred, however, as the collar can be adjusted more readily in this case than when slits are formed therein.
1 am aware that collars have been furnished with tabs forholding neckties thereon, and I do not therefore claim broadly a collar having retaining-tabs; but
I claim as my inventionshirt, having tabs 6 on each side of the central button, with a collar constructed for engagement with said tabs, whereby the rising of the collar-band above the neckbaud of the shirt is prevented, as set forth.
the shirt, having tabs eon each side of the-central button,f, with acollar, the bandaof which has tabs 1), adapted to engage with the tabs 6, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WALTER CHRISTOPHER.
