Patented Nov. 7,1882.
I v INVENTOR 4,,. L- ATTORNEY WITNESSES 6% UNITED STATES PATENT. OFFICE.
CHARLES C. JOHNSON, OF SPRINGFIELD, VERMONT.
DOLLS H EAD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 267,212, dated November 7,1882,
Application filed February 6, 1882.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES C. JOHNSON, of Springfield, in the county of Windsor and State of Vermont, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Dolls Heads atid I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawlugs, making part of this specification.
This invention is in the nature of an improvement in dolls heads; and the invention consists in a dolls head constructed-with a wooden core or foundation, the outer surface of which is covered with any desirable plastic substance from which the exterior of the head and the features of the face are formed in a mold, as is more particularly hereinafter described.
In the accompanying sheet of dra\vings,Figure 1 represents a section of side of head with solid block, and Fig. 2 a section of back of head with solid block; Fig. 3, side section with hollow foundation Fig. 4, section of back of head with hollow foundation.
The purpose of this invention is to produce a light, inexpensive, and durable dolls head. To that end I first turn in a lathe, from any suitable light wood, a wooden foundation. This wooden foundation may be solid, as is shown in Figs. 1 and 2, or hollow, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, and of any desired size. The exterior surface of this foundation or core is turned to a form that somewhat approaches (N0 model.)
the form of the head. The foundation at its lower side or end may be turned into a neckprojection, O. This solid or hollow foundation, when in this way completed, has its outer surface covered with any desirable plastic substance, D,from which the exterior of the head and the features of the face are formed in a mold to any shape desired, and when properly dried the head will not only be strong enough to resist breakage from ordinary use, but it will also be light in weight and comparatively inexpensive.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as' new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent," is- 1. A dolls head constructed with an interior wooden shell or a solid wooden founda tion, with its exterior surface covered by a plastic substance, substantially as and for the purpose described.-
2. In a dolls head, an interior wooden foundation with a neck-piece, U, formed thereon, substantially as and for the purpose described.
3. In a dolls head, a wooden shell or a solid wooden foundation covered with plastic material i'rom which the exterior of the head and the features of the face are formed in a mold, substantially as and for the purpose described.
CHARLES C. JOHNSON.
